AI-GEOSTATS: free spatial analysis software for graduate students

2001-10-02 Thread Dunrie Greiling

TerraSeer is offering 10 annual licenses of BoundarySeer
and ClusterSeer to outstanding graduate research proposals.

TerraSeer will award a total of over $12,000 in software in
a contest that will identify superlative research proposals
in environmental health, according to Nicholas Jacquez,
 President of TerraSeer.

 "The identification of health-environment relationships
from geographic data is recognized as one of the most
 pressing problems facing environmental epidemiology,
medical geography and the environmental sciences.
This contest will foster top-quality research by putting
state-of-the-art tools in the hands of top-notch
 researchers."

Dr. Geoff Jacquez, TerraSeer's Chief Scientist, is
organizing the group that will review the proposals and
 make the awards.

"We're drawing on some of the best scientific minds to
run the awards process. I expect this contest to
identify and support some truly outstanding research
 projects".

Research proposals shall be submitted through the
TerraSeer website and will be accepted through October 31,
2001. These projects will be expected to use the software
 as part of the analysis.

Awards of TerraSeer software will be made in November. Stay
tuned to TerraScene for the results of the contest and
 reports on the research.

This sounds terrific!

I may be a little petty here but how come this is
accetable but when we talk about our totally freely
distributable teaching software, I get my knuckles
rapped?

Re: [AI-GEOSTATS: free spatial analysis software for graduate students]

2001-10-03 Thread Gregoire Dubois

Dear all,

the first rule of the AI-GEOSTATS mailing list states that

"As requested by the subscribers, commercial announcements (software release,
new books, ...) are NOT supposed to be sent to the list. You should use
instead the NEWS online form where you also can announce a product, a new web
site or introduce a company. The announcements are put directly on the web."

I have been quite strong so far for what concerns adverts on the list and will
remain in the future. The following information, which was already put in the
NEWS of the AI-GEOSTATS web site has no place here since it invites readers
directly to visit web pages of a private company. Furthermore, the
announcement of the free distribution of a limited number of a commercial
software can be compared to the release of a demo version.

Please, avoid sending such information to the list and use only the online
forms instead.

Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation.

Best regards,

Gregoire Dubois (owner of AI-GEOSTATS)

Re: [Re: AI-GEOSTATS: free spatial analysis software for graduate students]

2001-10-03 Thread Gregoire Dubois

Hello again,

actually, I already sent a note to the list (it takes sometimes hours before
the mails arrive to all) before having received Isobel's email.

I decided long time ago not to moderate the list directly (I mean not
filtering the mails before they arrive on the list) since I'm not available
24h/24h and don't want to have subscribers waiting days before seeing their
requests/replies distributed to all. Because one has to be subscribed to the
list in order to be allowed to send messages, the list is partly protected
from spamming. This seems to work quite OK so far and I don't want to change
it at the moment.

Since mails are immediately redistributed to the subscribers, I can take
appropriate actions only after having received the messages (this may be few
hours or few days after the mail has been delivered). Therefore, if you
disagree with certain messages that appear on the list, please contact me
first instead of the list. You should get in any case a reply from me. If you
disagree with me. then you can still start to debate about it on the list.

Cheers

Gregoire (owner of AI-GEOSTATS)

PS: what I mean with appropriate action is the sending of a blame to the list
and/or unsubscribing permanently the author in case the message is insulting,
political, etc.
