[beagleboard] mDNS (nss-mdns) on Debian image

2015-03-08 Thread 'M Robinson' via BeagleBoard
I wish to get some mDNS service operating so that I can get the BBB to
interact with TI cc3200 SimpleLink mDNS services.

Using the current Debian Image 2015-03-01, do I need to install packages?
If so, which? If not, is there a good reference to getting it to work on
this image.

I'll continue to look into this while I await and post answers as I find
them.

Thanks,
Markus

If you are new to Linux, but want to play with the BBB, I would recommend
just following the Getting Started page to get going, and then use cloud9

I wouldn't mess with the packages until you get more experience with Linux.

I have the following Windows products available that I want to try to use:

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I can't find any sort of a guide

Robert's image builder isn't actually pulling in anything from LinuxCNC,
those are hooks for my MachineKit image:

 http://bb-lcnc.blogspot.com/p/machinekit_16.htmlhttp://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fbb-lcnc.blogspot.com%2Fp%2Fmachinekit_16.htmlsa=Dsntz=1usg=AFQjCNF8gaoh0QEDJ7jAment9Iv1RsW-dw

...which is built with Robert's scripts and a slightly different
configuration. Robert has pulled my changes to his scripts and left the
MachineKit configuration files as an example of how to build a custom
image. If you don't create a custom config file (based on
 config.inhttp://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fconfig.insa=Dsntz=1usg=AFQjCNFD_lndHNrr5UbhFINTE1ySWg3Apwor

config.machinekit), you'll get Robert's default build of various Debian
 and Ubuntu images.

As for the qemu directions, it's super simple:

Setup a root filesystem for an ARM device. You can use debootstrap to
make one from scratch (the way Robert's scripts do), or use one of the
 various pre-made root filesystems.

Which is this? It makes me think it's the SD card image, but...I'm not
flashing my real Beaglebone for this exercise!

Copy the qemu-arm-static binary into ${arm-root-fs}/usr/bin/

 arm-root-fs=/path/to/arm/root/filesystem/

 sudo cp $(which qemu-arm-static) ${arm-root-fs}/usr/bin/

 Then all you do is:

 sudo chroot ${arm-root-fs} /bin/sh

...and you're running a shell in your arm rootfs. Type uname -a and
notice you are no longer on an x86 CPU! :)

OK, this chroot procedure kind of reminds me of when my grub bootloader
kept dying on me everytime I tried to fix it. But I'm still not sure what
reference to use for building the root file system.

[beagleboard] Re: BBB power led blinking, revived after several power button presses

2013-11-22 Thread M Robinson
Last ditch: connect 3.7V (or similar) to the battery pins (TP6 3.7V, TP8
gnd), and see if it boots up. My 5V 1.2A switching PS can barely handle my
board, but the battery is good enough to handle the bursts without driving
the P/S into over-current protection (cutoff). My Li-Po has managed to stay
at 3.9V after being plugged in for a while.

On Friday, November 22, 2013 9:41:41 AM UTC-5, Bert Lindner wrote:

Just had a 5V powered Beaglebone Black seemingly die on me. First the
power led kept blinking, then after removing the (BB Toys CAN) cape the
power led would flash just once after applying power. Looking back in
previous threads this seemed to mean I killed the board somehow; there was
also a GPS module attached to one of the UARTs and a probably power hungry
USB wlan stick that I'm trying to get to work, so a power hungry setup.

I was ready to declare it dead, it remained just flashing once after
repeatedly unplugging and reattaching the power supply.

However I noticed the single power led flash would also happen if I
pressed the power button (leaving the 5V plug in). Doing that repeatedly
seems to have revived the board, will see if new problems occur. For now it
 behaves normally.

 Is this expected behaviour?

 Best,

 -Bert

[tdf-discuss] Wanted: Libreoffice php-based document management server

2013-02-13 Thread M. Robinson
Hello,

Nice work on LibreOffice 4, however, if I'm being greedy, I would also
like a LibreOffice, php-based, document management server.
I'm no php guru, but I'm a lot more comfortable with a php-based
solution than a java-based solution.

Hopefully more of the php-based CMS will begin offering CMIS
plugins for documeant management, but I think a LibreOffice solution,
A-to-Z (shared calendar), would be better.

At the very least, the foundation should adopt an existing php-based
CMS and push a CMIS document management plugin, or you can add a
LibreOffice gpg extension, partner-up and create a AbiCollab.net-type
solution which could generate revenue from users that sign up for Pro
accounts via LibreOffice.org

At any rate, commercial open source is open source backwards.

Re: [tor-talk] Scroogle is No More?

2012-02-21 Thread M Robinson

I've tried DuckduckGo, It isn't for heavy engine users. It seems like a
childrens search engine, and it has a lousy results format format.

I don't understand how Ixquick/Startpage can tap Google, yet Google goes
out of its way to crush Scroogle, which was by far the best out of what
I've found and checked on this thread.

I must be getting old, YaCy and Seeks can not replace Scroogle on its
worse day. My browser clears everything (cookies, flash) when it shuts
down. Why would I want to tie into any of these?

Clusty/Yippy fell to the dark side, after being bought they adopted a
disturbing censorship policy.

For a heave engine user, Scroogle is hard to replace, none of these is
getting it done like Scroogle; Ixquick, maybe, with a bit of
Greasemonkey, but I don't like the fact that they have Google access via
two sites while Scroogle is being forced off the net for virtually doing
the same thing.

 Hi friends,
My dog, Joe (some of you oldies know him) is dying. Two weeks ago, the
vet gave me the news. My Joe is almost blind, can't hear and has
tumors/lumps all throughout his body. He's only 12 years old - I rescued
him one day before he was scheduled to die - He's a 26 pound
corgie/staffie/doxie black and white beautiful dog.
So sorry you guys, I'm crying. But, no amount of money will fix Joe. I
think he's getting worse quickly - more difficulty breathing, more
coughing/choking; limping even more, not eating and there's more.
What's strange is that he's become a velcro dog. Now, he just wants to
be near me - which breaks my heart. Is he trying to say goodbye? Is he
 trying to say he hurts?
When the time comes-which sounds soon, what do I do?
Do I take him to his vet? Then what do I do with my Joe's body?
You all have unfortunately, been through this, but I haven't and I don't
 know what to do.
 Can you please help me?
 Thank you,
 *Carolyn*

Hello,

I just upgraded the Tor bundle, I unzipped it into a different
folder than the last bundle, but when I tried to import old bookmarks it
opened to the location of the previous version's exported bookmarks,
which were not saved in a default location. How does the new browser
remember where the old browser saved the bookmarks?

than climbing the fence. No holes. Please pray that he comes home safely.
He has taken off before when the fence wasn't up yet but he came back 3 hrs
later. Its been 7 hrs now and we are so worried cause its cold out and she
lives in the country and can hear coyotes and pigs all the time. Its
possible that someone may have picked him up because he is really friendly.

 Hi folks,
Remember the little girl I've been fostering for a few weeks? Her leg was
broken in two different places, and the previous owners hoped it would heal
itself. Of course it didn't. The vet took in the dog and then my rescue
group took her and did a fund raiser. They raised the discounted price (!)
of $1500 to pay to fix her leg. She had four pins inserted to heal the
bones and she's had two casts since then.
Long story short, next Tuesday, hopefully she'll get this second cast off
and have only a soft one (her third).
The back story about her and me is briefly - my friend was fostering
her. I was at her house visiting and admiring her foster dogs when she
asked me if I wanted to foster Emma Rose. Heck yes I said through tears,
as she put her in my arms. This was two days after my deceased
son's birthday, so I attach significance to that...
This little dog took control of my aching heart immediately. She helped me
get through all the firsts of my beloved son being gone (birthday,
Christmas, New Year's). Emma Rose made me laugh out loud and yes, I
lavished her with hugs and kisses. With that cast on, she needed me; I
 needed to help her.
As a foster mom, my job was to care for her while she healed, then put her
up for adoption. Well, I turned into what they call a Foster Failure. I
didn't want to give up the dog. They quoted me a discounted adoption fee of
$300, Umm. I can't afford to do that.
So I heard today that somebody donated the adoption fee so that Emma
Rose could be mine. This anonymous person was touched by the
circumstances of our situation and wanted me to have Emma Rose. Nobody
has ever done anything like that for me. It leaves me speechless. How do
you say thank you for something like this?
So this little cutie is now mine. I still can't believe it.
I don't know how to attach her picture.

I'm trying to hide/minimize the aurora window to the tray. this hasn't
been a problem in past versions, but now NONE of these type (PMW, DM2,
etc) apps will affect the tor/browser window. I Prefer PMW for the quick

That is because you have your icon style set to 'Human'. Ubuntu includes
 openoffice.org-style-human and libreoffice-style-human in their
repositories. If LO provided the same set the default to 'Human' the
save icon would be the same (disk drive with a down arrow).

Thanks for the explanation of why Ubuntu is different.

The point I am making is that an old fashioned floppy disk is not the only

 may
be old fashioned in a few years time when SSDs become the norm.

 Tony

I haven't heard of Delete/Eraser that works as well on SSDs as
traditional hard drives. That said USB will be the most common storage
media soon enough. Who saves to CDs at work?

I don't think the icon is a big deal, the whole interface is dated, I
pitched a Firefox addon-like interface a while back, but I'm still ahead
of my time on that.

Rather than reinventing the wheel, update the saveicon with a stock USB
icon: a vertical USB icon, it looks like a human carrying stuff and you
have the integrated download arrow, and it is a recognized symbol on
cameras, phones, TVs, etc.

That seems to be a problem with the PortableApps mirrors or your download
 manager.
Try to get LibreOffice separately from
 http://portableapps.com/apps/office/libreoffice_portable

In any case you should ask at the PortableApps forum since LibreOffice or

I would post here as well—LibreOffice.org IS linking to PortableApps.com
and claim to have some collaborative input.

If you are going to carry my flag carry it the right way. OpenOffice is
the PortableApps default office suite and it works, so they DO know how
to carry a flag.

If there is an issue with their server, then it should be OK from my

do is try. The more places you can download the files from, the better
it is for when the original server[s] are down or having issues.

As always, scan the downloaded .exe files with your anti-virus package.

+1, my main complaint about the Cloud is that it is a marketing term
 and refers to using:
a, server data storage with client applications
 b. server data storage with server applications.

The first is implemented by many companies to varying degrees, data and
documents can be shared by using a server while individuals work on a
local copy with applications on their computers. Depending on how the
sharing and integration is set up you may only need occasional access to
the data server. If the data server goes down, you may be able to
 continue working.

The second is basically a return to the mainframe with dumb terminals.
Those of us old enough to remember those days tend to shudder at this
regression (or more accurately stupidity). You are totally dependent on
the server/mainframe and the connection in addition to any local
problems. Server or connection goes down you are contemplating your
navel. Another problem with this model is there are finite limits to the
number connections and it is possible (not necessarily likely) to be
locked out due to all the connections being in use. I work on an online
application and we have limited administrative/vpn logins available and
periodically all the connections are taken.
this calls for LO to build a community of support people that can
support small to medium sized businesses and avoid the siren call
of M$ style big money and big ego.

Good luck with that one. Firefox isn't making that much money, but they
are so wobbly, from trying to becoming THE 'platform', that I'm looking
for the next browser—Chrome isn't it, but the market share it is
devouring confirms that I'm not the only one that thinks Firefox is
risking a flaming-out trying to achieve orbit.

More specifically, what is needed is more than a theoretical business
plan. A small, profitable organization (2-10 people) that provides paid
support for LibO to SOHO and SMB organizations that can show other
 individuals and organizations the path:
 * Tier 1 support;
 * Tier 2 support;
 * Tier 3 support;
 * Tier 4 support;

 # What each tier includes;
 # How much to charge for each tier;
 # Charging on a per incident basis;
 # Contracts;
 # Etc;

Does anybody know of anything along these lines, that was written
specifically for FLOSS support? The economics of FLOSS support, and
 non-FLOSS support are very different.

I can see it in theory. The scanner is looking for tokens or sequences
of binary code that are associated with virus / worm executables. It's
not improbable that a huge download, using compression, would generate
enough of similar looking binary string to trigger a false positive.

Why the antivirus scanner doesn't tell you what's happened? Mystery.

middle of the street about to drag some roadkill to the curb. I could see
immediately that he looked underweight. I quickly made a u-turn, headed
back his way, parked my car, and eventually calmed him down enough while
drawing closer, finally picking him up, putting him in the car and quickly
 drove home.

There he was given some food, which he scarfed down. He had no collar or
tags, no microchip when scanned. He was possibly dumped in our rural
looking locale, here in the northern section of Los Angeles. We could never
locate an owner so we decided to adopt him, named him Poco, got him
neutered (our vet estimates he's 12-18 months old) and he's part of our
family now, joining our two German Shepherds and three cats. He gets along
 famously with all of them!

I have never had a dog quite that small before but what amazes me and what
my initial question is: Do all chihuahuas relieve themselves as frequently
as this dog does? Just today he's done a #2 five times! And today is not an
exception. Poco's being fed Taste of the Wild kibble twice a day but not
that much. His stools are normal in consistency and color.

He seems to always want food and when he's outside he's often either
nipping at the dirt or finding something to eat out there.

 Thanks,
 Alan

The doctor listen to her heart and did confirm she does have a murmur! My
heart fell in to my stomach when he said that. They took ex-ray's and she
isn't in heart failure! Thank God.. She has a congenital defect of her
trachea. It is not straight like it should be. She also has a bronchial
infection, that is suspect she got from Caramella my new adopted Papillon.
So she is on some antibiotics for the infection, and diuretics to get
the fluids out of her . Also a vaporizer.
She is at a stage 3 murmur, but the doctor said she doesn't need any meds
 for her heart .
I hate the diuretics just cause I know they are really hard on the kidneys
 and liver..
I will post more with her updates. Please say a Prayer for Chassis. So not
ready too lose her so soon after her Mama.

have dumped her. Now, we may know the problem. She gets very excited if we
play with her or when we come home after being out of her sight for very
short periods of time - even five minutes sends her into total glee. And
then we notice little pee spots on the floor. Once or twice she totally
 lost it.

We will work with her or put up with it, but I wonder if any of you have
ever had this problem with a dog?

We take her out every two hours and she has no problem going the whole
night without an accident - just when she gets excited.

She was just spade a week ago but was doing it before and I forgot to ask
 the vet.

She is about 2 1/2 years old.

 Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi everyone! I'm Shari from Salt Lake City, UT. I adopted a chihuahua last
year that was in a shelter that was going to send her to the University to
be a test animal! She was this sweet little old lady and I said she
deserves to spend the rest of her days being comfortable on the couch and
not in a research facility. That was last October and happily, she is still
with us. We're not sure just how old she is...over 10 for sure, and had a
mouthful of rotten teeth. I got her a dental and they had to remove all but
two of her teeth! It doesn't stop her from eating or enjoying a nice chewy,
and she has got me smitten with chihuahuas because of her affectionate,
funny, and yet independent nature. Her name is Sofie and I put a picture of
her in the photo gallery...look forward to making new chi friends.

Hi, My name is Gwen and I am so happy to find this group. We had always
had large dogs but we adopted Poco 16 years ago and that hooked me on
Chihuahuas. He was a rescue dog and 7 mos old and became my buddy. We lost
him in August and were heatbroken, so felt we should get another rescue
Chihuahua. Now we have a wonderful little girl, Casey. She was dumped over
the fence of a rescue shelter - the vet is guessing she is 2-3 years old.
She is a well-behaved and very sweet personality - I have a hard time
understanding how anyone could dump her. She is going for her operation on
Monday - looks like she has already had a litter, but no more.

We also have a chi/JR mix (Bambi) that is 14 years old and they seem to be
 a very good friends already.

 I just posted Casey's photos.

she gets 1/4 cup with a tablsp of broth (home made...no salt or spices) She
 is pb chihuahua.

Saturday and Sunday morning she woke up throwing up white liquid. I
researched online and found this was common and due to waking up with an
empty stomach. So last night, I cooked rice in some home made chicken broth
and gave that to her as a third meal at 10:00pm.

No problenm this morning at all.

Please consider...I have dachshunds and the 3 of them are true food
hounds! So they eat lite with much restraint!! LOL!

What do you feed your chihuahuas, what fullfills their dietary
requirements best? Do you feed 2 or 3 meals a day? What is the best kibble?

Thanks all, I really appreciate all advice. I am an inexperienced chi

We had a Chihuahua show up in the dark Friday night – we live where
everyone has 5 acres and he doesn’t belong to anyone around here so he was
apparently dumped (we have three other dogs and two of them were dumped
too!) This little guy is very sweet, deer head type it seems, wonderful
temperament and appears fairly healthy. I took him to vet today to be
checked out and he has heartworms. He has not coughed or anything which is
a good sign but I’m worried and it’s also a big expense we didn’t plan on.
However, no way could I let him die or get sicker! The vet first has him
on antibiotics for 30 days to kill a parasite she says they have found that
causes the heartworms to be resistant to the treatment! He will also be on
preventive to keep young worms from growing up. Then he is to go to phase
2 (followed by phase 3) treatment in 60 days (not sure why that long) –
this will require some hospitalization and then rest when he is at home.
So it’s going to be a long haul. They think, from the amount of tarter on
his teeth, that he is at least 5 years old but he does not act very old at
all. She said she has not had a dog die from heartworm treatment in
years. I guess I want encouragement and any tips anyone can give. We tend
to be holistic with our own as well as our dog’s care. They all get food
like Blue Buffalo and Canidae and sometimes I supplement with a little raw
meat or canned wild Alaskan salmon and sometimes a vitamin supplement. I
want to build him up as much as possible before the hard part of his
 treatment.

Obviously he had bad owners (he has hookworms too) who then figured they
would just drive down a country road and dump him in the dark! I can’t
imagine doing that to this little guy!

The concern WAS the size of the male plus the fact she was s small.
From all of my research during this time, I found 100% of the opinion

Yes, I was supposed to get Cesar. He was supposed to get on a transport

this situation. I don't want to bring harm to those at home and
occasionally I bring homeless dogs in to vet them and find them homes. I

am good with mill dogs and knew I could help him recover. I have one mill
dachshund with us now and he will be with us until his time comes to pass.
He is a wonderful little guy and has made huge progress, although it has
 been a very slow transformation.

I can't help thinking of little Cesar stuck in the puppy mill. He should
have been home a month ago :( Had he met transport he would have already
been here and he would have been out of harms way. And I wouldn't have
known about the parvo. Knowing this now, I feel (based on vets opinion) I
would be irresponsible exposing my (now) 4 at home. Not to mention the fact
parvo can stay in the earth for many years after it has been contaminated.
 What would you do?

  Hi Tee!

First, I want to say thank you sooo much for even considering to adopt
one of these babies. The final decision is really up to you. I will tell
 you of my experience
with two maltese mill puppies that I rescued many years ago. It was when
parvo first came out, and the vaccine that they had for it was new on the
market and they really didn't have much time to test the vaccine, since the
outbreak was so widespread and hundreds of pups and dogs were dying across
 the states.

At that time I wasn't aware of what a PM is really like and had started
my first pet shop job. It was also the first time that this pet shop had
ordered puppies. We received 12 different breeds. Within the first couple
of days the pups started to look very sick and one by one would die
overnight when the store had closed. The owners were waiting for a reply
from the so called breeder as to what to do with the sick puppies. Parvo
can be extremely quick in killing a pup, before you really see all the
symptoms, while others can languish on for a couple of weeks. The store
owners refused to take them to a vet unless they were guaranteed that the
breeder would reimburse them and the breeder (PM) wouldn't reimburse the
store for the dead puppies unless the store shipped them back at their own
expense. So while they were arguing back and forth within the first two
weeks out of the 12 dogs, 2 got sold and I had no idea what their out come
was ,and 8 pups died and two were left, a bischon and a maltese. The
maltese didn't act sick and would follow me around the store an even sleep
under the front counter. So I was falling in love with him, and wanted to
get him out of there. Another week went by and he started to show symptoms
of being sick as did the bichon.

I asked to buy him and after 3 days of waiting for them to make a
decision, they finally said I could buy him. I had wanted to take him to a
vet as soon as he started looking sick but the owners wouldn't hear

the cats perfectly ...but Charlotte has taken to being what appears to be
'mean' to him - growling and lunging with her little 2 pound bark. I give
a 'no' command and pull her back away - poor Timmy looks at me and wonders
'what did I do to deserve that'? Sometimes she's relentless in pursuing him
this way. He's only growled at her twice but he's never been challenged so
I'm not sure how far he will allow her to push until he strikes back..I
don't want her to get hurt - he's only 14# but that's big enough. Liza and
Timmy are free roaming and need little disciplining anymore. I'm very proud
of them. A few people at the vet's office have suggested
correcting Charlotte with a little squirt of water from a spritzer

I've never had to correct a dog or cat in this way - so I'm reaching out
to all of your for help. I have no real place for 'time out' - I gate her
in the kitchen when I walk the other 2 outside - so I don't want to use
that as a 'punishment' place and of course I'd never use her crate.

makes life a lot easier for me to just pick up the used papers/pads and put
in the waste than to get all the dogs outside and back inside before they
get too cold. Also in the dark I have to go find Gabby who hunkers down
and hides. Dirty feet track in a lot of mud and dirt which I have to
vacuum up. Plus the time to let the dogs out as opposed to having them
tend to it without my help.

I am going to Prescott for some shopping at Walmart today. No,
not Christmas shopping…I have that all done and the packages are sent. I
need a few things that I cannot get in the Safeway in Chino Valley.

I pray that you are all in good health and also your fur babies
are doing well. Please be safe and well.

Ann, That’s the same way I feel. I see really big birds (I think maybe a

heard coyotes singing close by, which makes me very nervous and
protective. Another reason my cats all stay indoors. When I get moved to
 N. Idaho I plan to fix a place inside for my babies. It will require some
extra work, but that is of little concern to me. An indoor doggie loo has
always been one of my dreams.

It sounds like you have Desi's twin sister. Desi would not walk on the

problem. I put his leash on and he would just stand there. My neighbor
was about four squares in front of us and he wouldn't go. I thought it
might be the perspective of what he sees in front of him...endless open
space - no walls, no furniture, etc. One day when I had him on the leash
as well as Dolly, I started walking with her and my neighbor told me that
he was walking behind me like nothing was ever wrong. He loved me and
didn't want me to go anywhere without him...so the first walks were really
him following me so that he would be by me. Now he is the leader of the
walks and gives out a yap one way, then about 1/2 house later he does a yap
the other direction. I have since stopped that by doing a tug to his leash
and he knows when he feels that tug he should keep his little 'yapper'
 closed.

both of mine used puppy pads at first. I know I put Dolly outside to
go potty, she didn't really learn to go out every time until I had my
neighbor's dog visiting. Dolly was learning to go in and out with Mandy.
Desi was my total nightmare. he would go outside be out there for a long
time, and then would come in and potty wherever he pleased. finally, I
would put him outside and close the door. I would watch through the living
room window, and he would just be wandering around back and forth. after
about 20 minutes he actually went off of the patio and went potty. I had to
repeat that almost a week before he understood that he had to go potty when
he was out there. Dolly learned from Mandy, Desi did not learn from dolly.
Desi was a little chubby boy, so I couldn't do the routine treat after
every time that he did right. when his weight finally got down to a healthy
weight that is when I started giving him a treat when he came in after
going potty. we do have puppy pads in the house, and they do use those at
night or during the day if I'm sleeping. On cold and rainy days they also
use the puppy pads. I have 1 of the puppy pad holders and I experimented 1
day when it was raining this past summer. I put it right outside the door
in the corner of the patio. Dolly and Desi have used that puppy pad quite a
few times. some people have taken the dog out on leashes in the yard to get
them to go potty and understand that is where they are supposed to go. good
luck, I hope that she picks it up really soon.
