2023-06-12 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi Fred,

I'll reiterate my availability to participate in a new board/takeover
effort - it is important to keep celebrating the SFD and DFD days!
It is also a burden, and it is easy to burnout - so I can only thank
you guys for all that you've done so far, and hope for a good
transition to whomever takes the reins now.

Cheers,

Thanks for your reply. I did some work on the package, and have
uploaded it here:
https://mentors.debian.net/package/netkit-telnet-ssl/

The source for it can be found here:
https://salsa.debian.org/marado/netkit-telnet-ssl

One of the changes I did was to 'adopt' the package by claiming to be
the maintainer,
https://salsa.debian.org/marado/netkit-telnet-ssl/-/commit/9e2ca9aadab47bfbe1ece0b55b570d5ea5673bbd

However, lintian does not seem to want the adoption message on the
changelog marking the orphan bug (this one) as closed:

> Package closes bugs in a wrong way: Bug #1014046 is a O bug

Should I just remove the bug number in that changelog entry? Or should
I do something else/instead?

Issue re: the website (and others)

2022-01-07 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi there,

I was going to report this on mantis, but I don't see a section
regarding the website there, so I'm sending this e-mail instead, I
hope that's alright.

According to Tobias in
https://gitlab.com/gnunet-messenger/cadet-gtk/-/issues/10#note_781937121
, "cadet-gtk will be replaced as GNUnet messaging application by
messenger-gtk (or other applications based on libgnunetchat maybe). It
is essentially a reference implementation of the capabilities from
libgnunetchat using GTK." That being the case, I would suggest the
website is updated so that https://www.gnunet.org/en/applications.html
points to messenger-gtk instead of Cadet-GTK.

Running the risk of mixing different issues in the same e-mail...:
* It would also be nice to have a link on the "Conversation
(Pre-Alpha)" section, even if just to point out to its
documentation/man page;
* What is the supposed way to open issues regarding the website? And
messenger-gtk? If it is on mantis, can those sections be created? If
not, can we have the answer document somewhere, somehow (assuming it
isn't yet)?;
* Is there a messenger-gtk roadmap? Is 'integration with Conversation'
planned to eventually end up there?

The repository and the .so file are called 'libgnunetchat', the two
other projects that depend on it are also calling it that, instead of
'libgnunet-chat', so this patch replaces the reference to
'libgnunet-chat' in the README into 'libgnunetchat'.

GNUnet-jour-fixe: Debian/DPKG

2020-05-31 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi there,

While I haven't been attending to GNUnet's monthly mumble meetings, I
do appreciate how you create a public log of them: thank you!

On May's meeting, it is said, about the status of GNUnet's Debian package:

"Debian/DPKG: rexxnor wasnt able to get into contact to the debain
maintainers - the package is done but not in there"

Can someone please tell me in more detail what's the status on this?
As far as I know, the latest version available on Debian is 0.11.0,
but work to have 0.11.6 started by the maintainer[1].
There is an open issue for the update of the package[2], and in there
I linked to my own repository where I have been updating GNUnet
packages for debian, hoping the package maintainer will accept that
work and update the official packages[3]: currently 0.12.1 is packaged
in there (pull requests with the packaging of 0.12.2 are welcome, of
course).

I'd hate if this work is being duplicated, so if there is the same
packaging effort being made by someone else, somewhere else, I'd love
to hear about it!

[groupchat] [PATCH] beautify quitting message

2020-04-17 Thread Marcos Marado
When running as a client, and the application ends but not caused by
user input (C-c), the there is no carriage return after the exit
message, and so the 'quitting' message will drag the terminal prompt
forward.

This patch fixes that cosmetic bug by adding a carriage return to the
quitting message.

AFAICS, this ended up never happening. However, someone else worked on a set
of patches that, supposedly, implement this: more info at

Bug#953477: netkit-telnet: CVE-2020-10188

2020-03-28 Thread Marcos Marado
Did anyone confirm this against Debian's netkit?

At least on 0.17.24 (the earlier version on debian I could get my
hands on) or later, the nextitem function has this check:

>if (current >= end) {
> current = next;
>if (!current) {
>return 0;
>}
>end = nextend;
>next = 0;

>From my understanding of the CVE (and brief analysis), this should be
enough to avoid any possible exploitation, so I installed telnetd and
tried to run the exploit against it. And, indeed, the result I got
was:

> ⛤ Connecting to 0:23
> infoleak unsuccessful.

I might be missing something here, but I suspect that debian's
netkit-telnet (and netkit-telnet-ssl) are not affected by this CVE.

Bug#929131: gnunet: GNUnet 0.11.4 has been released, the Debian package is outdated. Please package 0.11.4.

2019-12-13 Thread Marcos Marado
In order to document this on the page for #929131 :

Work on packaging gnunet 0.11.6 was done (and is almost concluded) on
salsa[1], and no compilation problems exist anymore.
I actually concluded the 0.11.6 work[2], but the changes are minimal
and I didn't think at the time that it would be useful to submit those
patches.

In the meantime, GNUnet is already at 0.11.8[3].

Re: [Replicant] Security fix causing crash that blocks Replicant 6.0 0004 release

2019-10-18 Thread Marcos Marado
That ifdef is in there because this will happen to some devices but
not others (and we should investigate each replicant device to see
which of them are affected, it might be all as you assume, but it
might be none). Unfortunately, for the devices you see this happen, it
probably means that one of the propriatery files you are copying from
the device was depending on the old behavior.

2019-10-16 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi there,

To be honest, more useful than booth presence, what I'd personally like to
see would be a presentation regarding gnunet, and, FYI, the CFP to the
decentralized internet & privacy devroom has just been published:
https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2019q4/002903.html .

As for materials and presence in a booth, there has been GNU materials on
the FSFE booth (I think there's where I got a couple of gnunet stickers in
the past), and I think they'd welcome both gnunet stuff (stickers, flyers,
whatever) and people.

[GNUnet-developers] [PATCH] minor fix on installation instructions

2019-08-19 Thread Marcos Marado
On the website:

Three of the instalation guides were missing a line break in a list
of commands.

Furthermore, the Ubuntu guide, in one set of instructions, was
using an env variable without defining it.

Attached is a patch fixing these. The same patch can be found

Bug#933905: gnunet: erroneous patch introduces bashism

2019-08-04 Thread Marcos Marado
Package: gnunet
Version: 0.11.0-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Taking a look into the debianization of GNUnet, I realized that there is a
patch being applied that is intended fix bashisms, but, instead, seems to be
introducing one.

The culprit[1] patch is actually doing the opposite of what it initially did
when it was first introduced. During one of the version updates, a revert must
have caused this. The actual moment when the patch stopped doing what it was
supposed to, to do the opposite instead, can be seen here[2].

The fix is simple (just remove the patch), but if it is useful, here is a patch
providing the fix[3].

Re: [GNUnet-developers] gnunet-nim bug on "removed cadet option"

2019-08-02 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi,

It was indeed an issue with me still being on an older GNUnet version.
I was trying groupchat's HEAD, and since I build using its Makefile, I am
also using an updated gnunet-nim (which now works only against the latest
GNUnet version).

Please consider the small patch in attachment, as this simple change would
have spared me the wasted time, and all of us this e-mail thread :-)

Thanks for your quick support,

Subject: [PATCH] Raised dependency on GNUnet to 0.11.6

Since groupchat always builds against the latest gnunet_nim, and gnunet_nim now
depends on GNUnet 0.11.6, let's adjust the version of the dependency here.

I am probably not, now that you mention it...

Updating groupchat updates gnunet-nim, but that doesn't have any sort of
dependency check regarding GNUnet's installed version, so that's probably
it.

Thanks for the quick response!

I'm biased (these are events I'm planning to go anyway), and not really an
active part of GNUnet's developers, but there are two events I think would
be nice for the GNUnet hackers community to piggy back on:

* Ubucon Europe - https://sintra2019.ubucon.org/ , happening 10th-13th
October in Portugal (Sintra), they're interested in subjects connected to
Free Software and other things not directly related to Ubuntu, it would be
a good place to have someone presenting about GNUnet (awareness is always
great!) and it is a possible place where another of these GNUnet hacking
events could possibly happen;
* FOSDEM - probably doesn't need any introduction, I'm actually surprised
year after year that I don't see anything GNUnet happening there :-) Not
only there's a distributed systems track where presentations regarding
GNUnet would no doubt fit in, but they also have a track specific to BoF
meetings (which can also include hacking sessions).

Re: [GNUnet-developers] Contribute to groupchat. was (Re: Hello! (brief introduction and lots of questions))

2019-07-01 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi there,

On Mon, Jul 1, 2019 at 11:36 AM t3sserakt wrote:
> Hi Marcos,

Thanks very much for your reply, it was quite elucidative.

I know about the aims of secushare (I've been lurking and trying to watch its
development, as my particular interest on it is really a the realization fully
decentralized virtual world, which is what groupchat could be the start of).
However, when I learned about groupchat, and looking into its code, I saw no
relation between it (as it is, at least) and secushare: it looks to me as being
fully a client-server model...

So, what I was failing to see was that there is a plan to evolve what groupchat
currently is into a serverless, distributed chat system. The 'main task' to
achieve that (and the one I'm personally more interested in) seems to be this
one:

> get rid of the groupchat server, but using available (being online) peers in
> a group to do the multicast. This obviously needs peers of the group being
> online to have asynchronous messaging.

Is there something written up explaining in more detail what, in practical
terms, does this mean? A list of tasks to implement, or something like that?

As it is, I have several ideas on how to contribute with groupchat as it
currently is, but that would be mostly working on the current usability *with*
the server model, which seems like a bit of a waste of time, considering the
goals for groupchat.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend to the weekly meetings. Are there
minutes, logs or recordings of those meetings?

Thanks for taking your time helping me understand more about the goal here, and
for your work on secushare in general,

Please keep me updated!

In the meantime, my idea on why ir doesn't make much sense as it is:
* Currently we have one binary that works as both server or client. While
that's OK, there's really no reason why should this be the case: the work
of the server is inherently and radically different from the work of the
client;
* The client is, in fact, nothing more that something that connects via
cadet to a peer and a port, and then sends and recieves text. More
generally, it isn't really a groupchat client but a sort of "netcat for
gnunet". Making a gnunetcat would have several advantages: not only it
could be used to connect to a groupchat peer/port, but it can also be used
to connect to any other server available via cadet, same way.
* Left with just the server, I quickly ended up with the feeling that
contributing to it would be a lot like reinventing the wheel. Why? Well,
the server has two attributes: it is a text based chat server (like a
talker, or any other MU*), and it is available via CADET. So, (a) why doing
a groupchat should have to mean writing an entire talker, just because we
want a talker that is available via CADET?, and (b) does this mean we'd be
tempted to write an whole server to the next thing we want (mail, or
whatever)? It seems to me more reasonable for us to, instead, write a sort
of 'tcpserver' for cadet (cadetserver, why not): basicly a binary that
tunnels between cadet "connections" and a local binary... or, really, a TCP
server.

IE, I'd like to be able to have, instead of groupchat, something like this:
[serverside]
cadetserver $(gnunet-peerinfo -s) welcome localhost

[clientside]
gnunetcat $SERVER_PEERID welcome

And, of course, instead of having to implement an entire talker server, you
can be running any of the free software alternatives for one on your
server's TCP port .

This would also let you, of course, run any other TCP server over cadet, as
well as communicate with it.

Does this many sense to you? If not... what am I missing?

Cheers,

Is there any documentation or guidelines on the best way to contribute to
this particular effort?
I did create a patch and submitted a bug on Mantis[1], but I am unsure that
was the right way to go about it. I have a few other patches to contribute, but
they don't even constitute bugs, so I'd appreciate any guidelines you might
have on how to contribute to groupchat.

Well... as I said, the eV will be exempt if the gitlab instance has, as I
assume it does, the sole purpose of hosting free software.
But yes, despite having managed to create that exemption, Article 13
is still harmful to free software (and the society in general), and this is
something EU should not have accepted.
Unfortunately, that was not the case*.

* well, in theory there is still a chance that this gets rejected: there is
going to be a vote by the Council of the European Union next monday
(15th April), and it could still be rejected if Germany voted against
it -- which doesn't seem to be something they're willing to do.

I am assuming that the "EU regulation" here spoken of is the Copyright Reform,
in particular Article 13. If that's the case, then “open source
software development
and sharing platforms” are explicitly excluded from it[1] (let's see
how will that be
transposed into national laws). It is arguable what defines something
as being an
"OSS dev & share platform", but I think it is fair to assume that a
gitlab instance
run and maintained by GNUnet e.V. and with the purpose of hosting only free
software would qualify.

If the OSS exemption didn't exist, this wouldn't be enough: those
within the core
team would need the tools to validate copyright infringement on each commit,
instead of a simple "I looked at it and, after a cursory glance, I
don't think it
infringes any copyright".

[Replicant] Radio Lockdown Directive (and public consultation)

2019-02-03 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi,

Following up what has been said about the Radio Directive in Replicant's
BoF on FOSDEM, here are two links I'd like to share:

1) Information about the directive, from a Free Software prespective:
https://fsfe.org/activities/radiodirective/radiodirective.en.html

2) The (recent) public consultation:
https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/initiatives/ares-2018-6621038_en
(deadline: 4th March)

Bug#870473: calf-ladspa: Conflicts with calf-plugins in ardour

While I do agree and appreciate that it would be nice to have everything working
at once, a previous step is simple, possible, and needed: it seems obvious that,
as they currently are, the calf-plugins and calf-ladspa packages must be marked
as conflicting with each other.

Bug#771790: Fixed with 1.0.0

2017-06-14 Thread Marcos Marado
Hi, and sorry for the late reply.

1) OK
2) I use it on both stable, testing and unstable, but I'm OK with not
having this available in testing or stable: in fact I think it is better
not to have the buggy version available at all than to have it and then
suffer potential data loss.
3) As you can see from my late reply, I don't really have much time to
spend in these matters. That being said, I wouldn't mind joining the JS
maintainers, even if I'm unsure if anything good would come out of it. In
particular, your e-mail suggests to me that being a JS maintainer still
means finding a sponsor, which really is what I've been feeling as stalling
my contributions (this NMU an example, but also others like this ITP:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=772135 ).

If you still feel it would be useful to have me joining in, please let me
know.

Best regards,

Bug#771790: Package broken

2016-10-18 Thread Marcos Marado
severity 771790 grave
thanks

I forgot about this, and have been bitten by it again, on another machine.
As a result, I suffered data loss from what was only in memory and
should be on disk.

Since this bug causes data loss, changing its severity to grave.
I'm not sure how much can I do to help solve this issue. I'm willing
to submit an nmu
(which I already did, actually, see a previous comment), if there's any sponsor.

Please deal with this soon, this is nasty, and there's no reason for
not having it fixed yet.

Thanks,

Re: [libreplanet-discuss] [fsf-community-team] Golden Rule Angle for Libre Software Advocacy

2016-08-13 Thread Marcos Marado
I won't go as far as to talk about robotic bodies, but the issue is
pertinent today, with current technology.

I recently read about a woman who has a pacemaker. It had a software bug,
which frightened her. She knows /of/ it but she doesn't know it, since she
doesn't have access to the software running on her own body. Furthermore,
she found out that there is a functionality in it to accept OTA updates,
which she cannot control. Scary. And this is not science fiction, this is a
real case, current technology.

Unfortunately I don't recall where I read about this, but it was in the
last couple of weeks. On FSFE's newsletter, maybe?

Anyway, the question can be rephrased to "how ethical it is to implant
non-free software on someone's body?".

Hi there,

Nothing much to add, either that I seem to be in the same situation, with:
flashplugin-nonfree:i386/stable 1:3.6.1 uptodate

Curiously enough, I started with:

Flash Player version installed on this system : 11.2.202.540
Flash Player version available on upstream site: 11.2.202.554

And am now stuck with

Flash Player version installed on this system : 11.2.202.548
Flash Player version available on upstream site: 11.2.202.554

The 404 I'm hitting is at:
https://people.debian.org/~bartm/flashplugin-nonfree/D5C0FC14/fp.11.2.202.554.sha512.i386.pgp.asc

Nowhere in the man page does it suggest that -width -1 is legal, so why am
  I using it?
Well, it seemed to work for me in one application, and saved my having to
  pick a magic number.
After all, html2text didn't say it was a usage error.
Then came another application and html2text crashed, having produced glibc
  heap corruption output.
After reducing the HTML to a minimal file, I see that html2text is trying
to malloc for a width of -1.
On my amd64 system, that's been sign-extended to more memory than I have.
I wonder if html2text should refuse the argument, cap it at a sane value or
just report the malloc failure in a more revealing way.
 [...]

 Thanks for your report.

Html2text has no upstream, and a Debian package of it needs new
maintainer. It's unlikely that this will be fixed until someone steps
 up.

Here's a simple patch fixing this, by ignoring width values under 1:

Dear Maintainer,

$ echo quot;helloQUOT;, nu; rang; oelig;|html2text

quot;helloQUOT;, ν rang; oelig;

As you can see, nu; is correctly converted, while the rest is not.
That is because the table in the utf8 patch is quite incomplete.
Completing it (for instance, using this[1] as a data source, it's still not
fully complete, but almost) would fix this issue.

Bug#717338: kmail: indexing / search not working at all (Tools-Find Message)

2014-07-31 Thread Marcos Marado
Package: kmail
Version: 4:4.13.1-1

Dear Maintainer,

I'm just sending this message to let you know that this issue still happens
with the latest experimental version. As Volker Groll said, new messages are
indexed immediately, existing messages need to be opened to trigger indexing. I
have found no other way to trigger it. Neither nepomukpimindexerutility nor
qdbusviewer calls will help.
