In all other circumstances, in a word processor, image editor, or even a spreadsheet, whether it is an OpenOffice application or not, you can duplicate something with the following steps: *select the thing to be duplicated *copy *clicking the cursor elsewhere *paste Except when you try to duplicate a row in a table in Writer. No other steps are required to duplicate text, images, or cells in any other OpenOffice program, or indeed, any other program I can think of. Why should a row or column be any different? You can say it is the "correct" behaviour all you want, but it doesn't make OpenOffice.org any easier to use, and leaves a horrible kludge for users to work out. It's also painfully slow to have to find the "insert row" command every time you want to do it. You should note that I have not suggested a solution, just the problem. The solution may be to allow selection of a row or column in a way that is different to selection its cells, so that it is clear to the user and the application which behaviour is being used (cell or row/column based). When you do select cells, the current behaviour may make sense. When you select a row and copy it, it makes sense that the user wishes to have duplicate it if they paste it "between" two other rows. I wish I could recommend OpenOffice to more people, but little usability bugs that have not been ironed out at this late stage make me think that little development effort is going into making the basic GUI usable. Also I'm preparing another presentation now (around 6MB size), and it was quite fast to save normally... However firstly I tried to run the presentation, came back to editing mode but after that keys to move slides (page up/page down) didn't work, menu bar items didn't work either *locked*. I pressed Ctrl+S and it took exactly 34 minutes to save it (correctly). The graph on the bottom that displays the save status flashes. After minimize/maximize it appears again and goes forth for a very long time, the cpu occupied by soffice.bin during 34-minutes save was normally around 35% only. Also, when the document was saved, soffice.bin still had ~40% of CPU usage and was slow in reactions. Presentation was a standard one (37 slides), however with quite many small images. Later on I killed soffice.bin and restarted. It is a common question from users, via the forum, of why they can not create fields in their new form. In talking with them the problem is that after creating a new Base file the default view is for forms - so they select 'Create new form' and of course they cannot really do anything because there is no tables in the file for them to link to. It causes a certain amount of confusion right from the beginning. Also, it seems to me, that this would follow more closely with how other actions are carried out within the application. Most follow some context driver, in this case the context is that the first thing you need do is define your table structures - so that is what the user interface should display. This would I suppose only be a behavior for those datasource types of Base files that allow the user to create tables.
