OOo 2.3.1, Windows XP SP2, testcase on local HDD, NTFS - start new Calc instance (do not use QuickStarter!) - open testcase - delete all from empty cell (I use G38, where cursor stays after open) - save file Get unable to save error with almost 100% rate. Unfortunately I couldn't reproduce the error with your testcase (OOO2.3.1, WinXP SP2, testcase in MyDocuments, NTFS). From the description of the submitter I still concur that this is the cleaning temporary files problem. OOo creates a lot of temporary files but (as you correctly pointed out) keeping them open and locked would put OOo on risk to run out of file handles, at least on system with concurrent users. Instead of this OOo remembers the file names of its temporary files and reopens them on demand. If a cleanup tool meanwhile has removed them OOo is at a loss. As it is possible to detect this error we will add a more specific error message in this case. Unable to write is a very general message and can have many different root causes. I am wondering, however, if anyone else has experienced the following: when I try to open (by double-clicking) a *.doc attachment from Thunderbird (2.0.0.9) I get a Download Error: C:\folder\folder\folder\*.doc could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to disk first and then opening the file. Which I do and it opens fine with Writer. I have the 'Load/Save' option set to 'load and convert' WinWord documents, but something doesn't seem to be working between Writer and TB. This behaviour seemed to begin when I installed OOo_2.4.0 . . . Meanwhile, many forums or help pages give the recommendation to manually arrange OOo windows using the OS window manager. This recommendation, however, offers no solution to the waste of system resources (by opening several instances) and to the waste of screen space (by showing the same buttons bars etc. for each instance). In the end this lead ad absurdum when - as in my intended application - 4 or more sheets are to be displayed simultaneously (e.g. four quadrants).
