One barrier to providing a long dictionary is that rare words are often similar
in spelling to common-word misspellings. Thus, a misspelling can be accepted by
OOo because a rarity with a different meaning matches it.

Words that are correct but rarely appear should be approved after the user is
reminded of their rarity, so they can reconsider usage or misspelling. This
includes spelling variants, technical terminology, foreign borrowings, words
used in a field of scholarship but not elsewhere, and ancient language being
quoted.

A solution already exists, by creating or installing multiple dictionaries and
sometimes loading all of them, sometimes only the main one. One supplemental
dictionary would list rarities only. But it would be easier to simply click a
button in the Spellcheck dialog to approve rarities of one or more categories.

In short, if floccinaucinihilipilification were in a document and in a
Spellcheck word list, running Spellcheck would show the word as challenged but
instead of describing it as wrong or not in the dictionary it would be shown as
being in the dictionary but rare.

This rarity check could be optional, with radio buttons to treat all rarities as
either always wrong or always right or as rarities to be considered at every
appearance.

I'm using OOo Writer 2.4.0 without Java Runtime Environment on Linux Fedora Core
4 with Gnome 2.10.0 desktop on a Pentium 4 laptop. I didn't see this feature.

Thank you.

Yeah, it is. I'll fix things to do that in cmcfixes49. If you want you can write
me an explicit bug for that change to track that specific correction.

Verified in CWS. No crash, the background looks different on reload. But that
was the case even back in 2.4.1.

If Force Quit is meant to force all of Writer or OOo to quit, it should not have
a dialog statement that can be understood by lay users as meaning that only a
function within Writer will be forced to quit.

I created a new document, without saving, and typed a short line. I pressed F7,
invoking Spellcheck. The Spellcheck dialog window was blank (at other times,
either it worked or it showed content from another document window). I clicked
the Spellcheck dialog's close box. The Force Quit dialog that resulted had these
sentences in its message:

The window "Spellcheck: " is not responding.

Forcing this application to quit will cause you to lose any unsaved changes.

Technically, it's correct. However, most nontechnical users would read this as
meaning that the application is Spellcheck, and wouldn't realize that all open
documents having nothing to do with Spellcheck will also be made to go away,
losing changes. I tend to think of Writer and other OOo programs as separate
applications, which also turns out to be wrong, as I found when I reran the
above experience but with an unsaved Impress document from 2.4.0 also open. For
usability, then, reword "the application" to "this OpenOffice.org suite".

On the other hand, I reran the experiment but with only the Writer 2.4 document
and an Impress 2.0 document from OOo 2.0 Beta. Force Quit forced the 2.4
document to quit but the 2.0 document remained open, which is correct behavior.
Thus, "application", even in the singular, refers to all of OOo within version
2.4 only.

I set this as P2 because, to most nontechnically-proficient users, the loss of
unsaved work would be unexpected.

As a minor related point (of priority P5), the space after the colon is there in
error. If it's there because it's in the title bar of the Spellcheck dialog
itself, then the Force Quit dialog is right but the Spellcheck dialog is
mistitled.

I'm using OOo Writer 2.4.0 without Java Runtime Environment on Linux Fedora Core
4 with Gnome 2.10.0 desktop on a Pentium 4 laptop.

Thank you.

ٍThis remains unfixed in OOo 3.0rc1 on 10.5/Intel. Saving a file and examining
it with an application[1] that supports viewing/editing type/creator codes
indicates that neither type code nor creator code is set (i.e., values are set

(sorry for my bad english)

Here we can see an exellent example of how copyrights can inhibite technical
progress :-)

Please note that fonts that we usually calls "free" can be not so free as we
think. For example, user of "liberation" fonts v1.0-1 must be located out of
Cuba. Hyperbolic variant: is the font that can be used legally only at Moon free
or not free?

Other interesting thing is from "dejavu" fonts v2.24: "The above copyright and
trademark notices and this permission notice
shall be included in all copies of one or more of the Font Software
typefaces." Does it mean that text of license of this fonts must be included in
document that has this fonts in embedded form?

The next thing. Many of people here say about "legal nightmare" that we will
have if embedding fonts in OpenOffice documents will be implemented. But now
OpenOffice can export documents to PDF. I do not know technical details, but it
looks like resulting PDFs have embedded fonts. And AFAIK editing of PDFs feature
will be implemented in future. Please note that OpenOffice does not show any
warnings about legal problems when create PDFs.

By the way. This is question to all people here who want OpenOffice without
fonts embedding but want to use free software and free fonts. How do you send
you documents to Windows users?
I have a problem with this now. When I give an odt document to my colleagues -
Windows users for editing, I give them also a distributive of OpenOffice +
archive with fonts on USB flash drive + instructions how to install this fonts
into Windows. The solution of this problem is using only "liberation" fonts
family. This fonts has same metric that main Windows fonts and documents can be
opened properly on Windows even if "liberation" fonts is not installed. But
"liberation" family have no font with "times"-like view ("Liberation Serif" have
same metric that "Times New Roman"), so limitation to use only this font family
is very restrictive.

The other problem I have is broken font that have different metric in different
formats. Document that using this font in Type-1 format on GNU/Linux can not be
transfered to Windows where this font is in TrueType format because an interval
between text lines is different :-(

To luctur:
> However, even if fonts have the "Editable" or "Installable" bit set we still
don't know nothing about its license.
What about a new font format with embedded license? Or about petitions to
current font formats authors with ask to add obligatory license text to font
files in this formats?

In Mac OS X 10.5.x, the print window will not show a localized PPD options when
globalized PPDs are
used. This would also apply to any other platform using CUPS. I have seen
reference to applications
needing to call ppdLocalize() for the localized PPD options to be displayed.

Apple distributes globalized PPD file for their own printers. The Gutenprint
drivers are distributing
globalized PPDs for Mac OS X beginning with their current (v5.2.0-beta4)
version.

Currently, the following are found when using OpenOffice--
Example 1: US English version of OpenOffice installed. Printer is using
Gutenprint 5.2.0-beta4 drivers
with globalized PPDs. User 1 has language set for English. The Printer
Features (PPD options) in the
print window are all in English. User 2 has language set for French. The
Printer Features (PPD options)
in the print window are all in English.

Example 2: French version of OpenOffice installed. Printer is using
Gutenprint 5.2.0-beta4 drivers with
globalized PPDs. User 1 has language set for English. The Printer Features
(PPD options) in the print
window are all in English. User 2 has language set for French. The Printer
Features (PPD options) in the
print window are all in English.

Example 3: US English version of OpenOffice installed. Printer is using
Gutenprint 5.2.0-beta4 drivers.
Printer using PPD generated for loacalized French only. User 1 has language
set for English. The Printer
Features (PPD options) in the print window are all in French. User 2 has
language set for French. The
Printer Features (PPD options) in the print window are all in French.

OpenOffice should make use of the necessary API(s) to handle globalized PPD
files.

rainerbielefeld,

I can reproduce this bug on Windows XP using OpenOffice.org 3.0 RC1 and the
attached document.

It seems strange that you cannot reproduce this bug when I see it on both
Windows and Mac OS X. Maybe the difference is that your Windows machine has
Microsoft Office installed and my Windows machine does not?

P2 as this affects users ability to send error reports.

Following a crash,
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=93862
I opted for recovery of a drawing.

I opted to prepare and send an error report.

I pasted some text, a URL, into the report dialogue.

= Expected =

Text should be pasted to, and should appear within, the report dialogue.

= Bug =

Pasted text fails to appear in the dialogue (so I typed the report by hand).

Pasted text appears -- wrongly -- in the recovered file (in this case, a
drawing).

I apologize if my comments get posted twice: I don't see that they were appended
so I try again.

I have the same issue, but on Windows XP/SP2 and a Compaq EVO desktop with
2.66GHz P4, accessing .odt & .ods files on a 2G Memorex flash thumbdrive.

Happens in both 2.4 & 3.0b on this home machine, but hasn't yet on the similarly
equipped Dell desktop in my office. (I misidentified as an Opteron in the
earlier post; it's an Optiplex, 600 series, as I dimly recall.)

I followed my own suggestion and un/reinstalled 3.0b and success, I could then,
again, both see my databases/data sources and access them on the thumbdrive.

Unfortunately, following my habit, I created the problem again (so will have to
reinstall yet again). "What I think I did" was Insert - Fields - Other, then
Browse to find a database, BUT seeing a database entry (.odb) there which I
didn't particularly think useful anymore, I DELETED it from that spot by
Right-click - Delete and then went on to find and load my newer database.

I think doing it that way may have fouled up OOo's ability to track what was
going on because once again I can see the databases I've added but not see or
access their list of tables.

I am a real,
doof

I can't add the document right now (connection failures). I'll try again later
or ask me for it by e-mail...

Please report only problems for current version. 2.3.1 is too old.

Anyway this issue is invalid, closing.

1. I didn't find any paragraph indent in your headings so I added some (see
attached document) the way I thought may have mean it.

2. Don't write numbering plain text, use the Outline numbering

3. The format of headings in a TOC is not linked to the format of headings in
the text body. In the text body they use "Heading #" style, in a TOC "Contents
#". Son you need to adapt the Contents style.

4. You mention problem with footnotes. That's obviously another proble = file
another issue for this.

Thanks. Note that patching files in module binfilter doesn't make sense here,
these are used only to store/load legacy SO5.2 binary file format. Good that
files in svtools and svx were touched, as this shows that those places still do
things on their own instead of using appropriate i18n methods, continuing with
wrong assumptions like Vietnamese being a CTL language..

For the collation I hope we will be able to have a tailored collation in module
i18npool instead of having to patch ICU. We want to get rid of ICU patches
instead of introducing new ones..

Sorry, Thomas, I was away over two long periods, and I evidently missed your
other email when I
returned from the first absence last year. I just checked this feature in
OpenOffice.org 3.0 (DEV300_m21)
Vietnamese, and the emphasis option doesn't seem to exist anymore. (I know this
isn't the latest build,
but I haven't been able to download a later one yet.) Is Emphasis still
available in builds for other
platforms/languages under Format > Character > Fontworks ?

I'll attach a screenshot of the Fontworks dialogue in DEV300_m21 Vietnamese. It
lists (LHS) Underscore,
Strikethrough, Font Colour; (Centre, greyed out) Colour, Separate words; (RHS)
Effect, Relief, Outline,
Shadow, Blink, Hidden. I don't know where Emphasis has gone.

@FL: With a simple click you copy both: characters formatting ("hard") and the
default paragraph style ("soft").

The problem is that the "default *paragraph* style" (which you can modify over
the Stylist or in the context menu: "Edit paragraph style...") already contains
*character* attributes.

So painting characters from a hard formatted paragraph to another hard formatted
paragraph will paint the selection correctly but surprisingly change the rest of
the paragraph.

Example:
- 2 paragraphs from style "Default" (Times New Roman, 12pts)
- format them both *hard* in Arial, 18pts
- format one word in para1 as italic, bold
Now you want to copy the italic bold from para1 to another word in para2:
- select the word, paintbrush, apply to another word in para2

Expected: the target word is now Arial 18, bold italic and accessory, the
attributes of para2 didn't change.

Actual result: the target word is now Arial 18 and the other words of para2 are
reset to Times New Roman, 12pts.

This is conform to the specification (simple click pastes character attributes
AND paragraph attributes) but it is not intuitive! The character attributes
defined in the paragraph style collide with the hard character attributes.

We need to rethink the spec...

If I make a index of contents where the titles are multi-line and have got
indention's for the 2. line and following, the created index doesn't use those
indention's. Often it disables the footnotes when i try correct it manualy.

Sorry, this time I cannot reproduce the "destroyed table" but instead your
original problem "the empty tables".

For the "out of shape" tables, please submit a new issue and attach the file you
are printing to PDF from.

For the empty tables...

@OS: it's about a Calc area --- pasted as DDE ---> in a Writer --- inserted --->
in a Master document. So, in the end we have DDE inside of DDE.

When updating*** while printing to PDF, those imbricated links get lost. Can we
fix that?

*** curiously, the table content is not lost when updating *links* manually but
*Fields*...

It seems that the options for pdf export should be:
  - don't convert colours
  - convert to CMYK
  - convert to RGB
  - convert to grey
  - convert to black-and-white (set black level: 0,...,254)

Though it is surely the best to test the list for emptyness before accessing
it, it would be good to find out
why the list is empty in the mentioned scenario. If we are not able to set a
required file type due to an
empty suffix list the user can set the filename suffix to anything she likes
which is no big deal but also not
ideal since a different app might then want to open this file...
