Attached file is a paragraph created in MSOffice and converted into odt in OOo.
Please note that the last word of a line from the second line onwards are broken
into two lines. For example the word 'crowds' is broken into two lines and there
is no space between the characters w and d.

Other method to reveal the bug:
(image should be not sqaure, e.g. with 3:4 aspect ratio, not 1:1)
insert image
dbl click on it
ensure Keep ratio turned on
check Relative checkbox near Width or Height (or even both)
(here is still all ok with image aspect, it can be easily verified by clicking
ok)
input new value of width or height (doesn't matter) and u will see that image
is rescaled to be square :(

OOo 3, also OOo 2.4.1, Gentoo GNU/Linux, x86_64

This is very stupid BUG!

Office 2003 compatibility took a dive in OOo 3.0.0.

I tried writer. The XML format is broken. Writer refuses to export to this
format and gives an error.

Nor will OOo system tray applet open a complicated document embedded objects I
made with Office 2003.

here is a file with embedded objects.
http://JesusnJim.com/z/can-i-open-this-ooo3-in-word.odt

this file is 1.6MB. on a 2.8GHz machine with 3GB ram, once you start loading it,
it never finishes. the progress bar stays right in the middle.

This requires OOo3.0.0 and Office 2003 (uses Word, Excel, Equation editor), has
1 embedded picture.

Office 2003 compatibility took a dive in 3.0.0.

I tried the spreadsheet. The XML format is broken. it looks like it is putting
formulas into the XML file like maybe it is supposed to, but Microsoft Excel
2003 won't open the file that OpenOffice makes. it complains "Table" and error
dumps into a log file.

Nor will OOo spreadsheet open a complicated multi-tabbed spreadsheet with
references between tabs I made with Office 2003.

attached is a real excel multitabbed 2003 xml file with references between tabs.
calc is doing some awful strange things to the formulas, like adding extra
right perens on functions, etc.
file in question is the URL
http://JesusnJim.com/z/can-i-open-this-excel-in-ooo3.xml
it is a real excel file. the formulas look very different from that used by
OOo. but OOo 3.0.0 won't open it. opens fine in Excel 2003 & I can edit &
resave.

so this is both an import and an export problem. both are broken.

It is very strange that I cannot attach the patch to this issue. :-(
Do anybody on the CC list know how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

I would like to use the function that make one document collect the table of
contents of two or more files which inserted the table of contents.

(Supplement)
I divide and manage a file with much number of pages for every chapter, and
edit it.
However, since the table of contents of each file cannot be brought together in
one file,
I create a table of contents with manual operation. I feel inconvenient for it.
If there is a function that collects a table of contents to one file, I will
think that it is convenient.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch Writer and Accerciser.

2. In Accerciser, select soffice in the list of accessibles on the left, then
choose the Event Monitor page tab. Choose "Selected application" in the Source
group of radio buttons. In the tree of of event types, expand "object" and check
"active-desendant-changed" and "selection-changed".

3. Having done the above, get into Writer's Character dialog by choosing it from
the Format menu. Move to the Font page if you're not automatically placed there.

4. Give focus to the Font text object. Press Up and Down Arrow to change the
selection.

5. Give focus to the Typeface text object. Press Up and Down Arrow to change the
selection.

6. Give focus to the Size text object. Press Up and Down Arrow to change the
selection.

Expected results: When performing steps 4, 5, and 6, each press of an Arrow key
would cause an object:active-descendant-changed event and an
object:selection-changed event to each be emitted.

Actual results: We get the expected results for steps 4 and 5, but not for step
6.

Looking at the accessible hierarchy for the above items, the scrollable lists of
Fonts and Typefaces are each of ROLE_LIST whereas the list of sizes is of
ROLE_SCROLL_PANE. Would it be possible/make sense for Size to have a similar
structure as Font and Typeface? If not, some other way of causing us to get an
active-descendant-changed and/or a selection-changed event would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sorry to bug you for a user error.

Got to say though, you are doing a kick-ass job, especially kicking MS Office's
ass. OO has come a long way over the years and I now use it exclusively at home
on OS X, Linux, and Win. MS formats are required at work but I use OO for
almost everything and just save files as MS when it's time to distribute them.

OO is better/faster/easier than MS Office 2007.

Really & truly, you're doing an amazing job.

OpenType support isn't working quite right in Linux. More specifically, the
Adobe garamond font isn't rendering at all. Rather, the cursor disappears and
the text appears to be typed "behind" the page, and even then the small part you
can see is too small to be rendered correctly.

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1) Launch OOo. The Start Centre appears.
2) Press D. A new Writer document is created.
3) Either press Ctrl+W or click the small X button *below* the title bar to
close the document without closing the application. The document is closed.
The Start Centre reappears.
4) Press D again. Nothing happens. (But the application has not crashed:
clicking one of the icons will produce the expected results.)

I believe that the problem relates to keyboard focus. I know of three ways to
move the focus back to the Start Centre, so that the hotkeys work again:

1) Alt+Tab away from OOo, and then Alt+Tab back again; or
2) Use one of the menu commands: for example, either type Alt,H,B or click on
Help|About; or
3) Tab the Alt key twice.

Environment: I'm running OOO300m9 (build 9358) on KDE on Ubuntu Linux. I'm
using kwin, the standard window manager that comes with KDE.

Hi everyone! Some comments on hfingers list...

@ Notes could shrink in height to just enclose short comments [...] could
also automatically expand for longer comments [...]
>>> See the screen capture 'Notes-excessive-height.png'. There is only one line
but the Note does not shrink to just enclose it.
@ A Preference or Option would allow you to set the default para style for
Notes. You should also be allowed to apply para and char styles ... e.g. char
style Bold or Strong.
>>> At the moment, Notes are treated like UI elements of the operating system
and so the standard UI font is chosen. [Okay for now, but make the font
smaller!] But, it can be altered manually.
>>> A real pain when there are lots of Notes!
Concerning paragraph styles, Notes are technically based on graphic elements
(similar to text in Draw).
>>> What about a single-cell table or similar. This is a real pest when you
want to add underlining, bold, code font = Courier.

@ A Preference or Option would allow you to toggle the date or reviewer's name
to be revealed or concealed. This would save space.
>>> We decided against that option, because only few users will benefit from it.
>>> What about putting date and name in a single line, instead of one above the
other?

@ A right-click context menu item should allow you to select it to (a) copy it,
(b) cut it, or (c) delete it. It is too difficult to select the anchor point to
carry out these operations.
>>> There is a similar issue i89140 which requests drag-and-drop of Notes. We
still evaluate if moving an anchor is a benefit ... .
>>> From 89140: * A Note belongs to content in the text. Moving the reference
point (Anchor)
does only make sense if the content in the Note is not dependent on the Anchor -
that should be a rare case.
>>> It is not rare at all. I am marking assignment papers for an exam, and a
student will not only make the same mistake over and over, but other students
make that mistake in /their/ papers. So copy and paste is a real time saver.
It is just *very* difficult to select a Note's anchor point to copy/cut/delete
it.
* The reference position can changed by copy and paste of the Note or the Note
content (with some manual effort) - so it is possible at all.
>>> Anything is possible. I will send you the 14 papers and perhaps you will
change your mind! 8^)
>>> In this current job, I find that the same Note is required in many places in
the document. It is easier to select and copy the first Note, rather than type
it all out again.

@ A Preference or Option should allow a widthless vertical bar to indicate a
selectable anchor, much as FrameMaker does with the inverted-T anchor for index,
cross-reference targets, and other markers.
>>> It is planned to improve the context menu behavior for anchors in the text,
e.g. integrating the anchors in the context menus in the document text. This may
also solve this issue.
>>> Or just clicking on the triangle to select the Note.

@ Clicking a Note outside the text area, say, on a border, should allow you to
select it, too.
>>> I'm not sure if the text cursor is activated when clicking on the border (at
the moment I lack a working OOo 3.0 installation). But at the moment, there is
no functionality which requires such activation.
>>> Not very important if you can click on the anchor.

@ A selected Note should show handles that can be dragged to change its height,
over-riding the default behaviour, even if it causes a vertical scroll bar to
appear and there is sufficient space to display the Note without resizing it.
This resize should be able to be removed and the Note should then naturally
resize.
>>> As said before, we focused on a - hopefully - natural behavior for the
Notes. Such functionality really adds complexity to the Notes. (But of course we
discussed some idea some time ago, whether a "scrollbar"ed Note should fully
expandable.)
>>> I was thinking mainly of shrinking them to perhaps show a line. The reader
could (a) scroll the Note [okay for a few lines] or (b) grab a handle and resize
it to see all the content, perhaps temporarily obscuring neighbouring Notes.

@ Notes options should also allow them to appear in the RH or LH margin.
>>> Sorry, I don't know what H in RH or LH refers to. Could you please explain?
>>> Sorry. Shorthand for Right Hand, Left Hand among English speakers.
>>> What about RH, LY, or both RH and LH? If Notes alternated in both margins,
and were smaller, you could fit in lots, with less overlap of leader lines. On
screen, the page could be its normal size, in print it would shrink to the
middle.

@ Notes Preferences or Options should also allow them to be printed in the
margin as they appear on screen, even if the page width has to be reduced to fit
on the paper.

Well, you chose the ' ' space character as quote (text delimiter) character, so
it will be added and escaped according to the rules of CSV. If you do not want
any character at all, delete the character in the dialog using the key,
then no character is used. However, in this case you'll have to be sure that the
field delimiter character, in your case the ';' semicolon, does not occur in
data, else it would probably mess up fields in the reading application. There
may also be quirks if a double quote character is part of the data.

Better would be if the reading application would properly support the CSV file
format, including double quote text delimiters. Without those it is impossible
to have multi-line content or a field delimiter within a field. See also

@umbrasepia: I will soon publish a list of workarounds at
http://udk.openoffice.org/pyuno/python-bridge.html, there will also be the
solution for your problem.

@chemwords:
The python scripting framework (scripts within openoffice via Extras/Macro/)
does not work, when you have a python 2.3 installed on your windows system (more
precisly, when there exists a python23.dll in your windows/system32 directory).
You can work around it for now by copying Basis\program\python23.dll to
program\. beside the soffice.bin executable. This forces the soffice process
load the library beside the office process instead the one in system32.

Bye, Joerg

[sw-issues] [Issue 94959] Notes improvements: format ting, options, styling, printing

2008 ---
Hi everyone! Some comments on hfingers list...

@ Notes could shrink in height to just enclose short comments [...] could
also automatically expand for longer comments [...]
>>> This is implemented, please refer to the following like (and also have a
look on the picture on the page):
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2_Design_NoteWindowDistribution#Proposal_.22Reduce_Maximum_Height_of_Note_Window.22

@ A Preference or Option would allow you to set the default para style for
Notes. (The current default style is derived from who knows where and is far to
big.) You should also be allowed to apply para and char styles both as
anonymous over-rides or as named styles, e.g. char style Bold or Strong.
>>> The first item is a hot discussed topic. At the moment, Notes are treated
like UI elements of the operating system and so the standard UI font is chosen.
But, it can be altered manually. We still think about how to provide that
setting to the user.

Concerning the paragraph styles, Notes are technically based on graphic elements
(similar to text in Draw). Therefore the behavior differs from the Writer text.
Due to the missing ressources, it is unlikely that this will change.

@ A Preference or Option would allow you to toggle the date or reviewer's name
to be revealed or concealed. This would save space.
>>> We decided against that option, because only few users will benefit from it.
We instead focused on a robust mechanism which will allow a virtually unlimited
number of Notes on one Writer page.

@ A right-click context menu item should allow you to select it to (a) copy it,
(b) cut it, or (c) delete it. It is too difficult to select the anchor point to
carry out these operations.
>>> There is a similar issue i89140 which requests drag-and-drop of Notes. We
still evaluate if moving an anchor is a benefit - especially if we, hopefully,
support anchors for text selections, soon.
Please have a look at the comments in the issue. Since quite some time I wanted
to develop a proposal how to handle that, but I still haven't found the time.
Sorry.

@ Notes options should also allow them to appear in the RH or LH margin.
>>> Sorry, I don't know what H in RH or LH refers to. Could you please explain?

@ Notes Preferences or Options should also allow them to be printed in the
margin as they appear on screen, even if the page width has to be reduced to fit
on the paper. This is what Word does.
>>> This is what we would do if we would have some more development capacity :-)
I already our plans (or better, my wishes) in issue 94514, that you filed, too.

@ Leader lines from the marginal Note to the in-text anchor points should never
be superimposed on each other -- it is too difficult to trace. Some
suggestions:
-- vary the leader pattern with dots, dashes, dot and dash chains
-- vary the colour of the leaders and anchor points (but not the Notes)
-- let the horizontal portion of leaders be above OR below a line
-- combine all of the above if necessary
>>> I don't think that introducing more semantics to meta information in Writer
will solve that (think also of Smart Tags, spell checker, grammar checking, ...)
But of course, the anchors are not fully implemented yet (please refer to the
point describing the anchors for text selections). I'm sure there will be some
improvement in some of the future versions.

In the UX team, we discussed the behavior of such anchor lines some time ago and
I created some mockups for that. Unfortunately, I ha

I just tried this on my Dell XP with OOo 3.0.0 with the same result.
Someone please try this on a Linux system:
Do a Regular Expression search on any text document.
Search for: [\x0100-\x01ff] - finds J, j, N, n, S and s.

(My chosen 'Subcomponent' choice may be wrong. Issue does not seem to fit any
of those categories)

Background: XP SP3, 512 Ram, large HD. Occurs even with fresh XP install, and
with NO software installed except for OO. Occurs whether running as Admin
Account or Limited User account.

This bug has occurred for at least 1 year, the last version that I remembered
that did NOT have this problem was approx 2.0.1, possible 2.0 release. Every
version since has this bug.

Brief description: Load spreadsheet, select somewhat large amount of cell data
and choose EDIT-COPY. Then try to exit Calc. Exiting will cause scalc.exe,
soffice.bin, and soffice.exe to hang and PC will consuming 100% cpu until tasks
are killed.

Before OO version 3.0, only Soffice.bin and Soffice.exe hanged. As of OO 3.0,
one instance of Scalc.exe also hangs. The problem seems to be soffice.bin, as
the PC does not become responsive until that process is killed. Killing
scalc.exe and soffice.exe does not help. None of these processes will exit
without Task Manager force killing.

Steps to recreate -- in opening this bug report, I found a simpler way to
illustrate the problem, so I will give both. I will start with the "difficult"
method, because I wrote this scenario first before discovering a simpler method
to recreate.

Skip down to Example #2 if you do not have time to read Example #1, but example
#1 is the exact situation how I use Open Office, and how it yields problem every
time.

EXAMPLE #1 -- the exact situation which has caused this problem for me:

1) Double-click on a large CSV file, which will launch Open Office assuming you
have .csv associated with it.

In my example, once a month I download a large CSV created by EBAY, each field
separated by commas, and the file contains all of my EBAY sales for the prior
month. A typical month's file will contain 35 Columns and approx 150 to 250
rows. Cell data is only numbers, dates, email address, street addresses
(including streets and city and zip codes separated by commas), dollar amounts
(including the '$'-sign), and text. No pics, no formulas, nothing fancy.

OO will ask you to verify that the cells are separated by Comma, then proceed to
load.

2) Either open a new spreadsheet file, or load a previous spreadsheet file that
you plan to copy the CSV data into it. You now have 2 Calc windows open (CSV,
and new/existing spreadsheet).

3) Go to the CSV window. In my example, since row 1 is just a header, I skip
it. I hold down SHIFT, and mouse click the "2" for Row 2. While holding down
SHIFT, I use the mouse to scroll down to the last row in the CSV spreadsheet, in
this month's example it is Row 197 (I always choose one blank row in addition to
the last row that contained data, because I want a blank between each month's
entry). While still holding down SHIFT, mouse click on row 197. This will
highlight all rows from 2 to 197. Go to MENU - EDIT - COPY.

4) Go to New/Existing Spreadsheet Window. Mouse click to choose the first empty
cell in whatever row you want to paste the data into. For example, a new
spreadsheet, you might click into Column 1 of Row 1. An existing spreadsheet, I
might click into Column 1 of Row 1,500.

5) Keyboard: CTRL-V to paste your data, or edit-paste via Edit Menu.
(Paste-Special does not help any, same issue).

6) Save this new/existing spreadsheet as a normal ODS file.

7) Click X to Exit both spreadsheet windows. Does not matter which order you
close them.

8) Watch the processes hang and require Task Manager killing. PC is unusable
until the soffice.bin task is killed, which may require several attempts to
kill.

9) As previously noted, before OO 3.0, only the soffice.bin and soffice.exe
tasks hung. Now with oo 3.0, I see that one instance of scalc.exe also hangs.

**
EXAMPLE #2 -- What I discovered today while trying to investigate to best report
this problem to you:

Steps:

1) Double click to open any somewhat large spreadsheet into Calc. I used the
same EBAY CSV file as an example. 35 columns filled with data, 198 rows, as
described above.

(I also tried first saving the CSV file as an ODS file, closing Calc, th

Start python.exe from path/to/ooo/OpenOffice.org 3/program/python.exe

(windows only) Interactive mode in python does not work correctly

When you start the python executable without parameters, the interactive session
runs somewhat fuzzy (at least on my machine). When you get the prompt ,
everything you type will be interpreted as a shell command. When you then just
press return, you are prompted with your current working directory, here you can
place a python command, so in short, you have to press return 2 times after
every python command

Reason is, that the parent process does not wait for the child to complete, so 2
processes read from stdinput

Notes2 caught my eye. Is this the new implementation of Notes that float as
balloons on the RH side of the page? These RFEs apply exclusively to that
implementation. By the way, I love these new Notes and the way that text edits
are kept separate from the Notes, which are really commentaries on the edits or
the text.
Bloody Word treats Comments (Notes) as equivalent to edits, so all your minor
deletions and insertions all end up as one or two character Comments, cluttering
the RH balloons with chaff so that it is impossible to distinguish the
commentaries from the trivia.
This job actually has to be supplied in Word format but I am doing it in OOo 3.0
because the Word Comments drive me nuts. Fortunately, the distinction between
edits and commentaries round trips.
So I love my Notes but they will be even more usable with my suggestions
implemented.

Hi,

I think, it won't be enough to put this in the wrapper, the child process needs
to call WSAStartup again, doesn't it?

The call to WSAStartup was removed from sal with i77184 in sal/osl/w32/dllentry
r1.30->1.31.

Was this removal really necessary ? There are other circumstances, where
SAL_IMPLEMENT_MAIN_WITH_ARGS cannot be used(e.g. think of sal lib running as
internet explorer plugin, etc.).

Bye,

Joerg

Well, I could break this up into 12 issues but as some of them are codependent,
this would rather lose the thread of coherence that binds them all. And they
are not bugs, but enhancement requests. You are free to pick and choose the
ideas that you think are good.

It happens that I am doing a job that requires me to add extensive notes to 14
documents and the deficiences in the Notes implementation are becoming rather
obvious, the most annoying being the inability to set a default style and the
consequent overlapping of Notes on screen which are much larger than the one or
two words they contain.

I am 64 years old, there are many things to do before I die, I have a deadline
to meet with this job, and I have little time or patience to deal with the
bureaucratic heart that beats somewhere in everybody's chest.

I am well aware of "one problem, one issue" but in this case there are a series
of related issues. If you seriously think I have the time to go through the
laborious process of entering this issue as 12 issues over and over, you are
sadly mistaken.

Thanks NOT for the encouragement of this volunteer who has contributed many bug
reports and RFEs to various open-source projects over the years. I know well
which projects to devote my precious time in the future -- those that put ideas
and enthusiasm over narrow rules.

The fix per ticket 92558 is correct then although it would still be of interest

Hi,

I found a usability bug: If I select just a single cell in Calc an paste it in
any other OOo application, an OLE object of a single cell Calc table is created.
But OLE Calc tables make no sense for the content of a single cell, instead the
cell content should be pasted as formated text. I'm sure, that this is what any
user intends if he copy a single cell from Calc.

Best Regards,
Jörg Wartenberg

Sorry, but that can not be the solution: In that case I have another set of
characters in the file, which I dont want as well. Looks like caught between a
rock and a hard place.
I'm using this csv to prepare data for a ERP data migration. I need the data
exactly the way it is in the spreadsheet. with no extry stuff in it.
Excel does it nicely , but that does not help me promoting OO for enterprise
use.
Under this light, a solution is highly appreciated.

This issue is from a public organization that receives many of these forms which
have to be filled in and sent back. The problem is that the document is supposed
to be a one page but it is not opened as one page in OOo.

Please advise on a simple way to deal with this because reformatting all of
these documents represents a lot of work.

I see the same problem with a German OOo2.4.1. version.

The function EOMONTH belongs to AnalysisAddIn. Therefore the error has the same
root cause as issue 92530.

You can workaround the problem, when you set the file save format to "ODF 1.1".
You find this setting in Tools > Options > Load/Save > General > ODF format
version.

*** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 92530 ***

I have just intalled the 3.0 release. The issue persists. Once the
presentation is started in dual-head mode it places the presentation on every
single desktop instead of just once on the desktop it's supposed to. I have two
very old 2.0.4 installations that need to be upgraded -- but cannot be until
this issue is resolved.

The page setting buttons in the status bar look similar to the buttons in the
print preview, see the attached screenshot.

They have a bit different functions. The icons in the status bar do notthing in
the print preview. It seems that some users are confused by this.

Should we remove the status bar icons in the print preview at all?
Would be possible to create different looking icons?
Does anyone have any better idea?

When inserting Fontwork objects, the selection of the Fontwork objects after
inserting text is either impossible or possible only with the object selector
tool. It is not possible by clicking on the Fontwork object as stated in the
docu.
The behaviour is different from one object to another one.
a sample OO document with the defaults is available for your analysis.

In case it matters, I originally noticed this behavior a few days ago in version
2.4.1, then tested and verified the behavior in version 3.0.

I completely agree; unlike for example the "Styles and Formatting" pop-up,
there is no communication between the document and the list of changes. I want
more than that, but simply clicking somewhere in the text and having the
"Accept or Reject" pop-up reflect which change you've selected would already
help this issue a lot.

In MS Word there are two ways -that I use, there might be more- to accept
changes. Namely the track changes toolbar, where you can click accept or reject
when you've clicked on a change, and the text itself, on which you can right
click and also choose whether to accept or reject.

The main issue here is one-way communication from the dialog to the document;
this needs to be two-way communication, but something more Word-like could also
make this more user-friendly.

Downloaded OOO300m9 (EXE) and still on Wine, When I drag contents of a cell the
copy cursor does not appear.

For objects, with the CTRL and drag, I see the cross arrows cursor, even if it
is a move action.

Will later with try with a Linux version to report back.

When searching for a regular expression, and replacing with a blank string, both
"Replace" and "Replace All" recursively replace the search string. If you enter
any replacement text, it appears to work properly, but replacing with a blank
string results in the incorrect behavior.

For example, enter a couple of lines with repeating "a" characters, then do a
regular expression search for "^aa", leaving the "Replace With" box blank. When
you do a "Replace" or "Replace All", it will correctly remove the first two "a"
characters from the line, but then it will check that same line again and remove
the next two; it will repeat this until there are less than two "a" characters
at the beginning of the line, and only then will it move to the next line. If
you enter anything in the "Replace With" box, even if you enter "aa", it will
correctly only replace once then move on to the next line.

You're comparing the X11 version with the native aqua version, that is apples
with pears :-) Also, the font "HelveticaNeue" as reported by the Xserver to the
old X11 version actually has the name "Helvetica Neue"(note the space) on the
system. Loading the same document unfortunately results in using a different
font now. The fonts as used now are the same as in any other mac application.

Just my 2 cents.
