I also encountered this issue in OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.5. I find
it especially troublesome that the error message that is given {file path} does
not exist is completely bogus and does not help people at identifying the
problem at all.
Not being able to open files with special characters is a very serious issue. In
some countries the majority of the documents have special characters in it, and
many people who are not able to open their documents will not be able to find
out what the problem is and simply stop using OpenOffice.org.

Since the last step is compressing the contents into a zip archive there is room for improvement. What i have observed so far: When working with a document, only the needed files are extracted and saved to the temp directory. The thing is that each time you save, the complete ODF is first extracted to the temp directory and then written to the zip-archive again. Seems like double work. When dealing with large files of several MB containing mostly XML content you will face growing saving times. Such files take minutes to save, even with powerful hardware. If the file contains graphics there is mostly no need to repack them since most of them won't have been changed. Openoffice seems to do more than just compressing the files. Those steps might be saved too for unchanged contents. Since a ZIP archive doesn't have to be repacked from the start when adding or deleting files in it there's no need to extract the whole ODF before saving it. The already contained files are just copied, are not repacked, and only files that must be updated or are to be added will be compressed and written to the archive. You may have observed this time saving behavior when using winrar or similar archiving tools. Hence anything possible when working with ZIP archives of course holds true for ODF files. By only adding files to the ODF that have been changed, lots of time will be saved. If there is a way to save the contents of an XML into several files, even more time could be saved. If possible don't load the whole XML, only load the needed segments. The internal database supports two concatenation operators '||' and '+'. Base is not able to parse queries that use the '+' operator for concatenation in combination with a literal value. I attached a test database 97811.ods that contains the following queries: q_concat_col_plus_col with Base SQL: ok This query proves that concatenation with '+' symbol is supported with internal database. q_concat_col_plus_literal with Direct SQL:ok This query proves that concatenation with '+' symbol is supported with internal database in direct SQL mode. Disable Direct SQL mode makes the query fail. q_concat_col_plus_literal via derived table with Base SQL: ok This proves the workaround by using a derived table. Note the other 'workaround' for internal Base database is to use the more common '||' operator, but that is no available for MS access.
