Using comodo I started to understand where the problem is. The OO has probably created global hook to the clipboard on windows and everytime any program places anything into the clipboard OO is accessing this information. Thanks to comodo I can block this access so it does not effect any other application. And I've got a feeling that I haven't experienced the problem. Unfortunately I do not remember the number of that issue where it was discussed, just remember the last thing that was said. Something like this: The problem seems to be in clipboard library, but no one wants touch it, because it is somehow old and complicated and it would require a lot of testing. It was something in this sens. I think I signed on that issue too and haven't got any email since then. All together I have found 4 or 5 similar issues all corresponding the same clipboard problem. Truth is that now I'm using vista and soon I will move to win7 so the behavior has changed completely. I am working with a fairly large file - however 30 minutes to open this file seems like a long time! File is approx 25,000 rows, 6 sheets (two of them 25k rows) other sheets less than 1000 rows each. On all sheets I have a =COUNTIF(C$1:C$65536;C3) formula in each cell on one of the columns. The other columns are just data - no functions or forulas.. Maybe I'm just trying to process too much in one file - accepted - but would be nice if I could work on a sheet this size. When I try and open this file it hangs with Adapt row heaight in the status bar on bottom left hand of the ecalc screen. When I copy and paste to a new sheet or generally try and work with this file it is painfully slow (10-30 minutes minimum to process some of the changes to the data. I am trying to get them away from endlessly paying lots of money to Microsoft, buying new expensive computers, when they do not need to, and generally wasting the poor old taxpayer's money. So far, I am struggling uphill. I have apparently not persuaded any bureaucrat. When I speak to local politicians about the problem of waste, they seem to not understand. They tell me everything would be fine if only the mean old federal government would give them all the money which they are convinced they are entitled to. Sigh. However, there is one small ray of hope in the fight against Microsoft proprietary lock-in. Our local legal bureaucrats seem to have some understanding that the .DOC file format is the source of the lock-in. So they offer documents to the public, on their website, in both PDF and RTF (Rich Text Format). For example, see: http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/af/2006-76/ This particular document is the Pensioner rates rebate application form, a one page document which is likely to be downloaded by pensioners. Now, your average pensioner is not the greatest computer expert in the world. If they download a document it has to Just Work. To Adobe's credit, the PDF version Just Works. So also, does the RTF version, but only in Microsoft Word. Microsoft, to its credit, has been quietly supporting RTF format, for decades. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Text_Format I tested the document, using dear old Word 97 (which is 12 years old now, and counting). The RTF version is fine except for a slight fidelity error with the logo picture at the top. However, the rest of the form is beautifully usable. People would be able to use it just fine. Alas, when I tested with Open Office, the form was an unusable mess. I tried v2.4.3 for Windows 98 and v3.0.1 for Ubuntu 9.04. What came up in Open Office bore no resemblance to what it should have been. Try it, see for yourself. Now, this really gives me a problem when trying to persuade local bureaucrats. They can point out, entirely accurately, that the forms they are offering to the public right now, are just fine in any version of Microsoft Word, but turn into an unusable mess in Open Office. There is no chance whatsoever of me, or anybody else, persuading them to transition to Open Office, while that situation prevails. I am not talking about minor fidelity problems, where a few things get to be a few pixels out of position. The form turns into an utter shambles in Open Office, unrecognisable as a useful form. This is not an airy-fairy theoretical problem, this is what is happening right now, today, to real people trying to use office software. Please, you must take this seriously. I even said to myself, OK, I will manually re-format the document in Open Office myself, then write a correct RTF file, which will work properly everywhere. Nope, that did not work. That gave me an RTF document which was fine in Open Office but failed in Word. I cannot even say to bureaucrats, Work in Open Office, then both Word and Open Office can read the RTF file. It just does not work. No amount of frenzied promotion of Open Office is going to do the slightest good, if these fidelity problems remain. Likewise, copying the ribbon user interface will not do the slightest good, but might get you into legal trouble. Many users hate the ribbon interface as well. Do not waste your time on it. The existing menu interface is just fine. Ribbon users will happily go back to the menu interface, provided you do not leave it too long. Governments and large companies will transition from MS Office to Open Office ONLY when they can keep their existing documents, without doing a huge amount of work re-formatting everything. You must deal with the fidelity problems. Yes, I know, Microsoft plays the proprietary lock-in game at champion level. Their documentation, where they allegedly document their formats, sucks deeply. Microsoft has been using undocumented features in everything they do, for decades, as a competitive weapon. That situation is not going to change.

So I guessed, admittedly without looking at the code, that OOo took time to convert the dictionary to UTF-8 each time it was loaded. After I converted the dictionary and noticed that there was a sixfold increase in speed of loading, and I received similar reports from other users, one of whom found a tenfold increase, that was good enough for me to submit the UTF-8 dictionary to the OOo Issue Tracker. The behavior seamed random on several runs. Note on the comment of hba : I do expect Iif to produce an error if arguments #2 and #3 are not of the same type, since Iif is a function and thus should have a fixed return type, no matter the valuation of #1. It's perfectly fine that Iif(TRUE, 0, ) produces an error. The point of the this issue is that Iif sometimes (more or less unpredictably) produces an error, *even though* the types of #2 and #3 do match. If the function cannot be fixed, it really should be removed. One has to unmerge them, then highlight A3..D3, click Merge, and answer the_question: 'Should the contents...?'. Again, Calc should do that --including the_question, which should have (beside the Yes/No choice) a Cancel option, in case the user did not foresee the implications of his/her request. In conclusion, the solution to this whole issue seems simple: Calc should do automatically all the necessary 'unmerge', then do the requested operation. (If that gives an unexpected or unwanted result, the user can undo it.) On XP i had my Regional and Language keyboard settings as: English (New Zealand) Keyboard: US [Default] English (United States) Keyboard: US And it ALWAYS defaulted back to US English. This has driven me nuts for six months! I think I have solved the problem by removing the English (United States) installed service. All OO settings (locale, document default, style ...) were NZ and it is counter intuitive that the keyboard overrides this. Very frustrating. Or worse, in my case overrides this with the wrong setting apparently because I had two languages associated to US keyboards. The issue was that it took me six months to understand that the XP setting was overriding OO. A simple line saying OO would read the current XP language in the dialogue box Options Language Settings Languages that would have pointed me in the right direction! Or a checkbox to control this behavour. Would this be hard to include in the next release?
