If scrolling up or down in the document so that cursor position is now not visible and there is highlighted text (and I think other conditions) then if writer refreshes the screen then it changes the viewed part of the document to the cursor position. This can be reproduced at will by selecting a section of text, scrolling so that cursor is out of view and then bringing another window forward to cover the writer window and then bringing the writer window forward. I think the issue is because the currently viewed page is not always the page displayed when the window is redrawn. But in the case of brackets and parentheses similar problems repetitively seem to pop up. Therefore I feel the need to rethink the current situation once more. Some of these thoughts don't relate directly to this issue, but I think the broader view will also contribute to the current problem. Paired parentheses contain the notion of opening and closing. This is expressed visually, but only if both parentheses are directionally interpreted in the same way. So we mainly encounter problems in cases, where one bracket has an unambiguous bidi context and the second one is on the boundary of bidi runs. I think these cases could be improved by applying the unambiguous context to the pair bracket. The example to this issue is different, because here we have a symmetric situation (only one direction inside the brackets). Directionally-speaking it does not make a difference, if the brackets are assigned to the outer or inner run. They will swap their places, but the visual result is the same. Typographically, there is a difference: The brackets could belong to the inner or outer script and would be displayed in the corresponding font. In any case, as you stated before, bracket and enclosed word shouldn't be separated even if they belong to different runs. In the current situation the paragraph direction determines the script type of the parentheses in the latter cases. In these paired situations, the script type could also be determined by the enclosed script or the outer script. Each mode of interpretation could lead to subtle differences in the visual appearance (depending on the fonts chosen). But I think it is also a more general (philosophical) question: Where do the brackets belong? Looking into META-INF/manifest.xml, there is an attribute manifest:version=1.2 for the forms/Obj121 subfolder of the package. So, I strongly suspect this is a duplicate of issue 105371. If the status on the bug really is WONTFIX then it translates into that Open Office has no real support for legacy RTF files anymore. I very much expect this to be regression, but don't have older versions of Open Office around to verify. Further experiments I did also indicate that my proposed fix of saving as ODT file don't seem like a reliable solution. In some cases the problem resurfaces when the file is saved as RTF again. The motivation for the proposed fix was the hope that Open Office would cleanse the RTF file when changing format, but this does not seem to always happen. Anyway the critical issue is that if I do fix the incorrect characters to the desired font and the starting quote character and save as RTF Open Office do output an RTF file that opens correctly in wordpad. Unfortunately the resulting file will be corrupted again when opened in Open Office. To make things worse, if I miss the corrupted font and save the file in Open Office then the data of the file is corrupted and wordpad will show the same erroneous character as Open Office. It is also worth to notice that reason I am having starting quotes at all in the old document is that I performing editing of it and Open Office will replace my quote character with typographical ones automatically. To sum up. 1 I start with a file that Wordpad can show correctly. 2 Open Office 3.1.1 corrupt the contents of the file when loading. 3 If the corrupt file is saved the error is preserved, and require manual edit to fix. 4 At default Open Office 3.1.1 will automatically translate the inputed quote character to the character that cause the problem. If Open Office should claim RTF compatibility it must IMHO at least be able to properly open RTF files itself has outputed. At least on Windows systems, no information about INITIALS is provided by the system. A user account on Windows platform offers one string for FULLNAME and one for USERNAME. Both are not INITIALS. We can't even use the FULLNAME string in our Office fields NAME and SURENAME since we wouldn't know how to separate parts from FULLNAME. My recommendation is to turn this fix back and leave the fields empty from automation point of view. Leave entering of user data up to the users as it was. Regarding the idea to get information about which user has currently locked a file, you may find a different approach to address that issue by directly implementing this information about USERDOMAIN and USERNAME into the file locking processes.
