I have struggled with it for some months. It is most easily seen if you try to uninstall 3.1 from Control Panel Add or Remove Programs OpenOffice.org 3.1 Remove The removal process starts, but eventually reports that OpenOffice 3.1 is running and, as no instance is running, removal stops. After quite a lot of experimentation, the following resolved the problem. I am not sure if all the steps are necessary, but this is what I did: 1) Make sure the files for OpenOffice 3.1 are still on the desktop. Mine were in the Recycle bin and needed to be restored. If the files aren't on the desktop or the Recycle bin, you may need to create them on a different PC and copy them across. 2) In the Control Panel dialogue shown above, instead of clicking Remove, click Change and then on the Program Maintenance screen check Repair and click Next. Repair progressed most of the way, but didn't seem to complete normally. 3) Then, from the Program Maintenance screen, click Remove and follow the prompts. The application is successfully removed. 4) A new version of OpenOffice can then be installed. As I believe this is probably a problem specific to 3.1, I am marking this as 'Wontfix'. Previously I could convert all types of documents to PDF by using this command: /usr/bin/ooffice -headless -pt PDF-Konverter Profil.rtf Now this still works (i.e. it creates a PDF-file), but the command does not return after printing. Instead I have to kill it. As a workaround I found that I have to start first /usr/bin/soffice -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=8100;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager -headless -nologo -norestore -nofirststartwizard (that does not return either, but this time probably on purpose) When I issue the above first command again, it prints and returns, but this Server-Mode-OpenOffice has to run in the background. What is the difference between 3.0 and 3.1 and how can I create PDF's with just a single instance of openoffice? In sw/source/core/txtnode/fntcache.cxx writer fetches the Metrics of the
physical font, and under some circumstances, e.g. in the heuristic of...

the font used is taken *directly* from the physical metrics of the underlying
font.
Now the problem is that some fonts e.g. AR PL UMing CN etc don't have
bold/italic versions so vcl is faking these properties with freetypes
emboldening feature or something else. So the physical metrics do *not* contain
the bold/italic settings, so building a font directly on the font metrics looses
this information. The outcome is that at some zoom levels bold/italic is lost.

I'm running oowriter 3.1.1 version 310m19 on Debian Lenny Linux. Here are the details: 1. Start oowriter. 2. The Default paragraph style contains: - Options: Left - Text Direction: Use superordinate object settings 3. Change Text Direction to Right-to-left; Options is changed to Right. 6. Write a couple of words in Hebrew. The text is displayed correctly, from right to left and right-aligned. 7. Save the file as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) document. 8. Close the file. 9. Open it. Now the text is displayed incorrectly: it is left-aligned. When looking at the paragraph style it shows: - Options: Left (it shoule be Right) - Text Direction: Right-to-left When looking at the file in Word 2007 on Windows XP Pro the text is displayed correctly, though. The test continue: 10. Save the file with a different name - do save as, just change its name - do not change anything else. 11. Close the file, then open it. 12. The file (the second one) looks okay!? - the Options was, somehow, changed to Right. But if I now open it in Word, the text is left-aligned (this is wrong) - when OO display the text correctly Word display it incorrectly, and vise versa. If you continue this cycle - you start with file a that you create as in the first steps, save it to b, then save b to c, c to d, and so on, every time you save it the Options toggles between Right and Left. This toggling occurs also if you just save the same file - e.g., do a little change (delete a single character, then re-type it), save the file, and close it.
