I have been able to duplicate the behavior under OOo Calc 3.2 RC4 on Windows XP SP3 32-bit. What happens is: 1. Open an existing document and do some changes without saving. 2. Wait for the next auto-save of recovery information. 3. End the soffice.bin process with Windows Task Manager. 4. Open the document again (by double-clicking its file) and let OOo perform recovery. 5. When the recovered document has been opened, OOo will open it once again, but from the last saved file! 6. There are now two document windows, one where the changes are included and one without the changes. There is no marking of the first window as recovered; the windows appear identical unless one inspects the actual document contents. If one changes the old version and saves it, there is actually a warning if one later tries to save the new version over the changed old version (saying that the document file has been changed since it was opened for editing), but I doubt if many users would be able to correctly handle the situation at that stage. The behavior seems to be the same with very small documents as well as very large ones. OOo should not open the last saved version unless the user explicitly chooses to discard the autorecovery version, and if there are reasons to let the user open both versions simultaneously, the windows should at least be clearly marked. (Excel, for example, writes things like [Last saved by user] or [Recovered] after the file name in the window title.) Then again: nothing happens until the program finally terminates Depending on the OS (we tested on XP an Windows 7), if a user hits the closing X in the upper right corner again, the OS asks to terminate the program immediately. Confirming this after step 2 (user thinks the saving is done) can result in corrupt files. Even worse: With very large presentations ( 100MB) and embedded objects (bitmaps) OOo 3.1.1 crashes while loading the original powerpoint presentation. The easiest workaround is to add x to the end of the extension, a la OOXML, but personally I don't think that's pretty). P/S: As for mentioning opening is slow due to compression, OOXML also has compression but from my light experiences using MS Office 2007, .docx don't take that long to open, so I don't think it's a valid argument. bzip2 is a nightmare in compression time (which translates to longer save time). This may be related to the issue described in bug report issue no. 92697, but since this is tagged unconfirmed and occurred in another OS version, I think that it should be reported. Trying to open a file with a non-ascii character in the path name gives a modal dialog with a ... does not exist message. This happens if I open the file by double-clicking it in the Finder, or by using open from the Terminal, or via the File Open... dialog. (To reproduce the error, just copy an OpenOffice text or spreadsheet document and rename it, say, ä.odt resp. ä.ods - the first character is an umlaut a, an a with two dots on it, Unicode 00E4.) Trying to save a file with a non-ascii character (say, umlaut-a again) results in a file %E4.odt. Trying to open that file in OpenOffice (by double-clicking in the Finder) causes OpenOffice to crash. Surprisingly, though, it is possible to open such a file via File Recent Documents. In my opinion, this bug is a major show-stopper for OO in non-English speaking communities. Mac users are used to be able to use their native language characters in file and folder names that many of them will not even think about renaming their files and folders and instead consider OO badly broken and unusable. This means: when you type something with big height, these symbols should also
grow in height. For example, try inserting a formula like this:
{int{1 over 2 over 2}dx}
It will be somewhat uneasy to read.
