RANDBETWEEN is implemented in a way, that it does not recalculate automatically.
So you have to use a "Recalculate Hard" (Ctrl+Shift+F9) to get new random 
values.

Concerning "multiple operations" I need an example document from you. You can
attach it, if you use the link "Create a new attachment" in the issue tracker 
form.

OpenOffice.org does not implement an own random value generator but uses that
one, which comes with the compiler. It has only 2^16 different values. Are you
sure it is appropriate for a Monte-Carlo simulation?

The attached file is not an Excel-document but a simple text with some html
markup. On Windows OS the file extension xls is often connected to Excel or
ExcelViewer. So people sometimes fake the file extensions so that Windows starts
Excel when the user double-clicks the file icon. And Excel is only a spreadsheet
application and therefore tries to open every file it gets in some way.
But Openoffice.org is a suite, which contains several modules. So OpenOffice.org
looks at the content to decide which module to use. It sees some html-markup and
therefore opens it in Writer/Web.

For to open such a 'broken' file in Calc, you have to select the filter by
yourself. In the file open dialog first select the file. Then open the file type
drop-down list and select the type "Web Page Query (Openoffice.org Calc)
(*.html, *.htm)".

If I open, using file/open, the attached test.xls it is read into Writer and not
Calc. (Have yet to find out how to attach)
Strangely if I click on test.xls the behaviour is different - I am asked about

I have switched from microsoft word to open office about a year ago and i have 
been pleased with the 
software ever since.  however today when i was typing a chemistry report which 
is due on friday at the 
very latest, i noticed the my font had changed size for no reason.  so i go to 
my formatting tool bar and 
check to make sure it is all size 12. it is, so just to be sure i do COMMAND 
A(select all) and i check to 
make sure the formatting still says 12.  it does it says its all in size 12 
font and being a tech guy, i know 
how to fix stuff like this but this is just plain stupid.  its probably and 
error on my part but check it out

Suppose you want to collect the values of the sum of 3 throws of a dice (or an 
even more complicated problem in financial analysis). I would set up three 
cells with Randbetween(1,6) and a fourth cell to sum these three cells.
 
Next, I would set up a Multiple Operations (i.e., DataTable in Excel) to 
collect thousands of replications of that sum. This is done by setting any two 
blank cells as the row and column input cells. I know we can use relative 
referencing to set up the table but this approach cannot apply in the actual 
problem in financial analysis. 
 
Using Excel’s DataTable to collect replication results for such Monte-Carlo 
simulations works fine, but not Calc’s Multiple Operations. Specifically, 
Multiple Operations will give the same answer for all the replications. Thus, 
the implication that recalculation is not triggered in the algorithmic steps in 
Multiple Operations.

I can submit example (xls and ods) files but don't know how.

I think this issue come from compatibility of OOo and Ubuntu library. So far I
think OpenOffice from Ubuntu repository is the best to run in Ubuntu.

Just avoid installing openoffice from outside installer. Just use installer from
Ubuntu repository.

I confirm this issue on my system,  running Ooo 320 m12, build 9483 on Linux.

Writer scrolls about 1,5 cm more than the current line with the mouse.
Which is often too much.

It would be much better if it scrolled only one line, to allow finer control.
Since most modern mice use optic sensors for the scroll wheel, that shouldn't
cause a problem for most users.

Alternately, one could make the number of lines configurable under
tools::options::display, section mouse.  (Preferably defaulting to 1.)
(Sorry if the names are a bit different in english, my Openoffice is in french.)

Fixing it under options would have the positive effect of applying to all types
of documents.
(This issue is much more important to me for spreadsheets.)

On my computer (running Ooo 320 m12 build 9483),
Writer scrolls about 4 cm more than the current line with the arrow keys, which
is even worse than with the mouse (about 1 cm more than the current line).
On emacs-type word processors, aren't the page up/page down keys used for
half-page scrolling, rather than the up/down arrow ?
In any case, there are word processors which act like that.
If Openoffice uses this approach, the problem can be easily solved to the
satisfaction of everyone.

I have purchased computers over the years with Win. 98, XP and windows 7 and 
ALL of them had WORKS installed as Word processor. So it really isn't by choice 
that I have a couple hundred Documents that I can't read with OpenOffice. If 
you can't read these doc's then it is useless to me. I'm dumb founded as to why 
this is such a HUGE problem..

I've just encountered the same problem, sorting data, in Ooo 320 m12 (build 
9483).
(On Linux.)
As the first comment by "rainerbielefeld" indicates, it's a format issue.
(See his analysis of the problem.)

A number nominally reformated as text is still formated as a number, and is
sorted as such.
One must re-enter the data to translate it to the text format.

There are similar problems with certain text being automatically formated as 
dates.
Changing the format to something else (for example if it were a postal code or
currency in some locales) produces a weird number which has nothing to do with
the value entered.

Seriously, the value displayed, when reformated, should only change its visual
presentation and treatment, while retaining its association with the value 
entered.
I.e., be treated as number if nominally formated as a number, but if reformated
as text, be treated as text in every respect, and continue to display the same
value.
Similarly, a date should retain its value as entered, if changed to another 
format.
If this means reformating the stored value, so be it.
(It might mean that, for items like dates, that the value entered should be
retained, as least for the session when entered, to allow the user to correct
automatic formating errors.)

Anything else is counter-intuitive at best.

Unlike the comment by "er" following that of "rainerbielefeld", changing the
format stored is *exactly* what I would expect.

IMO, this is a serious flaw in Ooo.
It gets my votes.

Rainer, I am a little confused by your feedback.

You are using a different version on a different platform. Both differences
could be the reason for not being able to reproduce the issue. Neither do I
understand what you mean when you say my sample document doesn't prove anything
because you can't see the path. I have provided full paths in my issue report.

I have already informed about my application source in an additional comment to
the original issue report. I am using OO.o provided by the stable openSUSE.org
11.2 repository available at

The version was not quite correct in my initial report unfortunately as I missed
a character in the version. My version is OOO320m21 (Build:9319) according to

2) Chose menu item "Help" => "About OpenOffice.org"

3) Started KSnapshot

4) Stored screenshot of About dialog as

5) Inserted screenshot as image copy (no link) in top half of page. Menu item

wanted to keep image as linked image in popup dialog box. Menu item "Insert" =>
"Picture" => "From file..." was used. Added descriptive title.

7) Saved drawing as /home/kjetil/Utvikling/OpenOffice.org/Feilrapport/Issue
111763/test case 2010-05-24.odg

8) Closed file.

9) Opened Dolphin and navigated to
/home/kjetil/Utvikling/OpenOffice.org/Feilrapport/Issue 111763/

10) Opened "test case 2010-05-24.odg".
Expected result: 2 images showing the "About..." dialog box. 
Actual result: 2 images showing the "About..." dialog box.
Now, that's odd...

Got an idea

21) Tried changing the name of the image file so it contains Norwegian
characters, but still the bug is not reproducible.


So, I have two files with the error, but now I am not able to reproduce it, even
if I have not changed the software in between.


What I tried now is to repair the links, and that solves the problem. When I
repair the links to the pictures, save the file and reopen it, the images where
I have repaired the links are displayed as expected - while the images with (so
far) unrepaired links are not displayed.
Really odd...

I even tried creating a new file in the same directory and inserting "SRT Orso
Bruno høyre.jpg" as linked image - and that file had no such problem. The test
file only had one image, but since all the images suffered the same problem in
the original files I don't expect that to be the problem.


I am not sure what is the best way to proceed. A lot of time could be spent
trying to recreate this without success, and that would be a terrible waste of
time. I guess the resolution "not reproducible" (WorksForMe) is appropriate in
this case.

Further to Rainer's response, I note that width/height and modes seem to
auto-adjust. If the mode is landscape, the document size adjusts to make the
width larger than the height. Personally, this strikes me as odd. I'd expect the
document size to stay the same irrespective of the mode.

I note a different inconsistency when I try to print. Even if I tell the print
dialogue that I have portrait mode paper loaded, it printed my document tiles in
landscape.

Rainer is correct that if I change the text to curves, the tile printing does
work. However this now makes editing the text a real pain.

A worse problem is that I still don't understand why there is a "tile pages"
selection within the options and also a "print on multiple pages" option after
sending a document to print. If I select "tile pages", why am I being asked to
print on multiple pages?

Currently I am leaving the "tile pages" option off and just letting the "print
on multiple pages" handle things. The "tile pages" option appears to be
superfluous and is apparently NOT looked at when the second print dialogue
checks to see if the document fits on a page.

To make this clear, I believe the page tiling subsystem is broken. There appears
to be a workaround but it is not ideal. Moreover the current user interface and
paper handling are a mess.

Found the fix:  Deleted my OpenOffice configuration subdirectory in my home
directory.  Rebuilt from scratch a test drawing with a text box defined with
black background color and an axial gradient.  Export with PDF shows the text
with a proper gradient resolving from black in the center to transparent at the
edge.  So, updating openoffice from the default version shipped with Ubuntu
Hardy which I think was 2.4 to the latest available, which is 3.2.0, can have
problems with the old config directory.

Installed from ubuntu PPA main repository for updated Openoffice packages.

Error: When exporting to a PDF, text boxes with an axial gradient defined and
background area color set to black, do not come out that way.  The foreground
color may be the text color or may be the last text color used.  Sometimes the
background color is not black but the text color and the foreground is black.  I
haven't figured out where this is coming from.  The old default behavior was to
have a defined background color for the area of the text box and then the
gradient affected a transition from that color to transparent or reversed
depnding on how the gradient was defined.  Now I'm getting a gradient between
two colors and no way to pick "no" color.  Could this be affected by an older
~/.openoffice.org directory?

I'm not sure how you can say the paper size and orientation was wrong.
Logically, something wider than high in portrait mode is identical to something
higher than wide in landscape. Indeed, Draw treats the two as identical during
design. If Draw wants to regard a page configuration as illegal, it should
either not allow it or correct it automatically (that seems simple enough - if
wider than high, switch dimensions and set mode to landscape).

Secondly, your complaint about elements going off the page is just a "feature"
of Draw. It creates text boxes that are larger than the contained text.No part
of the actual text was even outside of the page margins.You don't say what
"corrections" you applied, but changing the design is not a "correction". 

Draw should not make people jump through hoops to get a valid document printed
as tiled pages. It seems to me the basic algorithm is straight-forward:
- start at the top left and print the section of the document
- move right one print-page width and print the next section
- when at or past the right margin, drop down one print-page height and return
to the left
- when at or beyond the bottom-right, stop.

You could even get fancy and not print blank pages.

None of this requires knowing whether the document is defined as portrait or
landscape. 

As for non-printing elements being off the page, if Draw wants to address those,
it should do what Adobe Acrobat reader does and make that a print dialogue
selection. As I reported earlier, it's confusing after having told Draw to print
as tiles to then get a warning that the drawing is larger than the print page.

However, since the dialog gives an option to print over multiple pages, it
should work as advertised. But turning off tiling and just telling Draw to print
over multiple pages doesn't work either.

In short, this is a real bug, not a problem with my document. A work-around
might be to change the document as you suggested (which I will try to do), but
that's just a work-around, not a fix.

es, I would prefer that Issue 77953 be fixed (along with this one) and the sheet
name were editable in the import dialog. Then there would be no reason to have
an additional option--the name would be set to the file name by default, which
in any case makes more sense than the arbitrary "Sheet 1", and the user could
edit it to whatever she prefers--even "Sheet 1" if she is so inclined...

Could someone promote this issue to "CONFIRMED"?

Note that this is a very annoying problem, which really needs solution, despite
technically being an enhancement.
(It also wastes a lot of valuable time.)

Note also that a number of issues have been filed relating to special cases of
this problem.  This issue proposes a general solution.

Note also that this proposal is by toolbar.  Each toolbar would continue to have
its own positioning.
Also this could apply to any Opendocument type, not just spreadsheets.
(Although my primary interest in this is spreadsheets.)

What is expected : When I open a calc document containing a macro triggered on
"open document" and which has the effect of selecting a sheet by default, it
should be able to select the sheet I want even if the document was saved in
"preview" display mode.

What is observed : When I open my document, which is saved in the "preview" mode
and contains a macro that choose a specific sheet assigned to the action "Open
Document", BASIC throws an error and says it cannot access property or method
called setActiveSheet.

Steps to reproduce problem :

1. Create a Calc spreadsheet. Save it under the name "test".

2. Create a macro : go in Tools -> Macros -> Manage Macros -> OpenOffice.org
Basic. Navigate to the standard macro library of the current spreadsheet
(test.ods -> Standard) and click on the "New" button. Name this module
"test_macro" and press "OK". Now between the sub and end line of the Basic code,
copy the following code : 

oController = ThisComponent.CurrentController
oController.setActiveSheet(ThisComponent.sheets(0))

This macro, when executed, put focus on the leftmost worksheet (sheet 1).

3. You can now compile the code using the "Compiler" icon. You can execute it,
it shouldn't fail at this stage (as our document is not in preview mode). Close
the Basic code editor.

4. Next, we assign our newly created macro to the "Open Document" event. Go in
Tools -> Personalize (customize) and in the "Events" tab, select "Open a
document". Click on "Macro" button, and browse to your macro under test.ods ->
Standard -> test_macro. Click OK. This will trigger our macro every time we open
our test.ods document.

5. Finally, click the "Preview" button or select File -> Preview. Save the
document in this state (File -> Save).

You can now close the document. Upon opening it again, Calc will inform you of a
Basic error with a popup : "Basic execution error. Property or method not found
: setActiveSheet" This only happens if the document is saved in the preview 
display.

The test.ods file produced by following these steps is attached for quick 
testing.

I received a sample documents with many formatting mistakes showing the reported
problem; after I corrected those mistakes, poster print worked without 
problems. 

So this report seems to be INVALID; let's wait for further information.

I knew the method to show the rest of the structure after the Ubuntu Lanchpad 
told me a few hours ago,but it's an obstacle for most of the newcomers.

I have a draft (*.odt file) using a multi-column layout with a page title on
top. Saving and reloading the document as OpenDocument Text file fails to
maintain the position of the title above the 2-column part of the document,
instead it puts the title at the bottom.

It is impossible to set up Impress to close the Task View Panel permanently.

The procedure as follows does not work:
View -> Toolbars - (name of the toolbar) -> uncheck

When I close the View panel, then a document, then Impresss and start Impress
again, the Task panel is open again. It's really annoying.

System info:
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.
OO 3.1.1, build 9420.

PS: I reported this issue to forum.openoffice.cz on 26/11/2009 (Fedora 10, OO
3.0.1, build 9379) with no success...

@OS: for unknown reasons, the structure (type: "Book") of the bibiliography
dialog in the sample document shows a disabled scroll right arrow while the
structure extends the visible area.

i.e. hunspell api says to use free_list, not individually free the array
elements and then itself with free. Its the same thing at the moment, but
there's no guarantee that they were allocated with malloc vs say new

"Not immediately" means "not before first edit, switch to other window or other
action.

The problem might be related to the Auto Update mechanism. It vanished after I
did an update for my SVG import extension. Currently the problem is no longer
visible for me.
