To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=103737 --- Additional comments from abqb...@openoffice.org Fri Jul 24 15:28:14 + 2009 --- The stylist is good, but awkward to use with only the keyboard because it is modeless. For example, if I want to apply many styles, I have to position cursor or select text, press F11 (or press F11 twice if stylist is already open), select a style, press Enter, and then press F11 again to close the stylist. Ctrl+F11 is also good, but it doesn't list character styles. My idea is to provide a modal dialog that would allow you to quickly and easily apply a style. I attached a sample picture of what this might look like. This would be a great enhancement to productivity especially if combined with issue 31275. Thanks! Please restore this functionality as it is not productive to always be forced to use the mouse to assign character styles. Yes, I know I can choose a _specific_ keyboard style and assign it to a keyboard shortcut, but that's not a help when you have a large number of character styles. It would be more productive to provide a modal pop-up dialog from which we could assign a character style from a list. Ctrl-F11 as it works now is OK for assigning paragraph styles. What I would like is a better way of assigning character styles using the keyboard and without being forced to use the mouse. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=103737 User abqbill changed the following: What|Old value |New value Status|CLOSED|UNCONFIRMED Resolution|WONTFIX | --- Additional comments from abqb...@openoffice.org Thu Jul 23 13:54:29 + 2009 --- You can travel using F6 (normal case: 4 times) to the Styles and Formatting pane (when opened with F11) and choose with the keyboard with the keyboard (up/down) a character style. This is only effective if the Stylist is 1) either docked alone on one side of the text or 2) it is a floating window. Try docking the stylist along with the navigator on either the left or right -- when you do this, the tab key moves among both the stylist and navigator controls. Is this an odd use case? At best leave the Styles and Formatting pane on the character styles category. But you can also travel through the other categories using Tab and Left/Right. Again, this only works if the stylist is a floating window or is docked alone to the left or right of the text. Indeed it's a Little bit more complicated then with the old Ctrl+F11 dialog but we won't re-introduce it just for this specific case. With all due respect, this is why I opened the case. Note that I did not ask for the style catalog window to be reintroduced. I asked for a better way to assign character styles. I don't think the request is unreasonable. Apparently, it is also possible to select the file types you want to register with OOo by setting the REGISTER_NO_MSO_TYPES property to 1 and then set individual properties REGISTER_EXT (where EXT is an extension, e.g., DOC, DOCX, etc.) to 1. The only reference to this appears to be in the German OOo wiki here: http://www.ooowiki.de/InstallationUnterWindows?#WindowsInstaller I have tested REGISTER_ALL_MSO_TYPES=1 with Office 2003 and it appears to work properly. I have not yet tested REGISTER_NO_MSO_TYPES=1 and individual types. This information needs be published in the official documentation. My opinion is that it makes the most sense to provide this capability from the installer. If this capability is not available in the installer, it can make managing multiple OpenOffice.org installations more difficult (unless the association management tool can change associations for multiple machines over a network). Since the installer can already associate Microsoft Office file types (as the 2.4 installer did), I think it makes the most sense to simply restore this capability to the installer (and no doubt this is also the simplest solution to implement). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=89097 states the request to skip the association step, and the comments following reinforce the community's desire to restore this capability. It was not good to reduce the functionality of the previous version in this regard. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [installation-issues] [Issue 89097] Skip MS files association
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=89097 --- Additional comments from abqb...@openoffice.org Fri Jan 9 22:31:40 + 2009 --- I found this reference: http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=releasesmsgNo=12418 ...which explains the rationale behind removing the association dialog. However, I disagree with the rationale that the dialog should be removed from setup due to users tend to check those options in setup and wonder why MSO registration is set to OOo. If users did this without reading the dialog, I would consider it user error that can be repaired by using the Repair option with MSO or the MSO viewer tools. It is a hindrance to remove useful functionality without providing an alternative. In addition, the OOo 3.0 help file still refers to the dialog box under the topic Installation/Changing the Association of Microsoft Office Document Types. I vote again to restore the OOo 2.x functionality to allow the installer to create the file associations. The default state of the check boxes is a different question. Presumably if a file type does not have a registered application, the default state could be selected; otherwise, it could be deselected. This impression is only reinforced by verifying that the dialog is still there in the installer database (MSI). Please fix the installer database and restore the association dialog, or provide another way to accomplish the association(s), because an important feature has actually been removed.
