Dear all,

I think there is a problem with saving tables with vertical text in Word format.
I would be grateful if you could investigate. Thank you.

What I did to create the error:
1. Open OpenOffice.org 3.2 RC1 Writer running on Windows XP
2. Create a New Document.
3. Create a table with 1 row and 1 column.
4. Type the word 'text' into the table cell.
5. Select the word 'text' and use the menu option Format - Character -
Position - Rotate 90 degrees. The word 'text' appears vertical in the table
cell.
6. Save as a Microsoft Word (97/2000/XP) .doc file.

7. Open the document in Microsoft Word 97 on Wine
Expect to see (correct): vertical 'text' in table cell
Actually see (incorrect): horizontal 'text' in table cell

8. Open the document in Microsoft Word 2003 Viewer on Wine
Expect to see: vertical 'text' in table cell
Actually see: vertical 'text' with a square box at the end of the word

9. Open the document in Microsoft Word 2000 on Windows XP
Expect to see: vertical 'text' in table cell
Actually see: program tried to repaginate the document, reaching several
thousand pages and becoming unresponsive.

10. Open the document in OpenOffice.org 3.2 RC1 Writer on Windows XP
The document opens normally and formatting is correct.

Please see attached file which has this error (opens correctly in Writer but
not
in Word)

[sw-issues] [Issue 17171] Paragraph cannot be longer than 65534 characters

I presume lawyers want to create documents that look like a single paragraph
when printed and are not bothered about OOo's internal representation of the
paragraph. For performance reasons it is better to keep paragraphs small,
certainly much smaller than 60,000 characters.

What about the following solution:
Provide an additional paragraph style feature merge with next paragraph. If a
paragraph has this style, OOo is allowed to move the paragraph mark when
repaginating / refreshing the document so that it always seems to merge into
the
next paragraph. When documents with large paragraphs are opened, they are
automatically split into smaller paragraphs with this paragraph style feature.
When saving in Microsoft Word format, the paragraphs can be merged back into a
huge paragraph.

Alternatively, without a new format:
1. On detecting a very long paragraph approaching the limit, Writer will
automatically insert a paragraph break and warn the user that it has done so.

2. To provide an extension or plugin for 'virtual paragraphs'. This program
scans through the text in the current section (or selection) and moves all
paragraph marks to the end of the nearest line, to give the illusion (when
printed) that the document consists of one paragraph. It will check that there
is zero extra linefeed before or after the moved paragraph marks. The program
will not alter double paragraph marks, or marks between paragraphs with
different text styles.

When I open Test6.doc in Word 2000, the vertical text is left-justified i.e. at
the bottom of the table cell. When I open it in Writer 3.2.0, the vertical text
is right-justified i.e. at the top of the table cell.

I opened Text6.doc in Writer and saved it as Test7.doc. This document opens
normally in Writer but causes Word 2000 to become unresponsive, stating that it
is counting thousands of pages. In fact in my experience any document saved by
Writer 3.2.0 in Word format with vertical text in a table cell causes problems
when opened in Word. I am not sure if this is a symptom of the same bug.

I appreciate that these problems are caused by the difficulties in dealing with
a proprietary binary file format. However it would be nice if they could be
resolved because I commonly use vertical text in tables. Thank you.

I tried these tests in OOO 3.2 RC1 and the errors are not reproducible. It also
fixes all 'corrupted' documents and enables them to be opened in Word.

I therefore consider that this bug has been fixed.

Tables with 13 or more columns become corrupted when the document is saved in
Microsoft Word 97/200/2003 format (*.doc).

The corruption is only apparent when opening the document in Microsoft Word (I
have tested it with Microsoft Word 97 and Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 running on
WINE, and Microsoft Word 2000 running natively on Windows XP). It causes
Microsoft Word to crash.

The corruption is NOT apparent when opening the Word document in OpenOffice; in
fact it behaves like a normal document and can be edited freely.

Merging two columns to reduce the total number of columns from 13 to 12 removes
the corruption, and allows the document to be opened normally in Microsoft Word.

This problem occurs with both the Windows and Linux versions of OpenOffice.

Steps to reproduce the error:
1. Create a new Writer document
2. Insert a table with 13 columns and any number of rows
3. Save it in Word format and close Writer
4. Open the document in Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 (or another version of Word)
- IT WILL CRASH OR SAY THE DOCUMENT IS CORRUPT
5. Re-open the document in Writer - IT WILL OPEN NORMALLY
6. Merge two columns to reduce the total number of columns to 12
7. Re-save it in Word format
8. Re-open it in Word - IT WILL OPEN NORMALLY

This error only occurs with tables that were CREATED in Writer.

13 column tables which were created in Word work in both Word and Writer.
Tables with fewer columns (e.g. one) created in Word, with additional columns
subsequently inserted in Writer to bring the total to 13, also work in both
programs.

Hope this helps to localise the bug.

This also occurs via saving as Word 2003 XML (see files in via_word_xml.zip)

Steps taken to create this error:
1. Create a 13 column table in Word, and save it as doc1.doc
2. Open doc1.doc in Writer and save it as doc1.xml (Word 2003 XML format)
3. Open doc1.xml in Word and save it as doc2.doc (actually I did this by
copying
and pasting the table from Word 2003 viewer to Word 97)
4. Open doc2.doc in Writer and save it as doc3.doc
5. Open doc1.doc in Writer and save it as doc4.doc

doc1.doc, doc4.doc and doc2.doc will open in Writer and Word.
doc3.doc will only open in Writer.

[sw-issues] [Issue 3959] Outline View (aka MS Word)

I also think that Outline View is essential, but it does not need to be more
complicated than necessary.

I propose these specifications for the outline view:
REQUIRED:
Ability to view headings down to any heading level.
Ability to promote/demote sections of the document.
Ability to collapse/expand view of particular sections of document.
Ability to move or delete whole sections of the document easily.
Text fields to be shown.
Math formulae (or their LaTex/OOO math text representation) to be shown.
Simple formatting (superscripts, bold, italic, underline, colour) to be
displayed (but not necessarily WYSIWYG - it is acceptable to simply display
markup codes if this makes the program easier to develop)
Hyperlinks should function.
Full search and replace ability.
Ability to switch to Page View with the cursor in the same position in the
document.
Fast responsive viewing.
Ability to select/cut/copy/paste text using the mouse or keyboard.

NOT REQUIRED:
Different fonts are not required - all text can be viewed in the same font; in
fact even a pure PLAIN TEXT display with judicious use of colour and a fixed
width font is acceptable (like Vim, Emacs, Kile etc.).
Images do not need to be displayed.
Margins, page formatting, columns, justification etc. do not need to be
displayed.
Table row/column widths do not need to be displayed accurately (in fact tables
could even be omitted and replaced by a [TABLE] tag or suchlike; clicking on the
tag would switch to Page View with the cursor in the table)

The people who need this don't care about eye candy - the outline view has to be
fast and easy to navigate but not necessarily pretty.
