You're right, the function VALUE solves the problem and its use is formally correct. I apologize if I did waste time. However: I did a Google search, but I have not found anything useful. The worksheet that generated the error works properly with Excel97. Version 3.1 of OpenOffice-Calc works properly with or without the function VALUE. As a end-user, I prefer to write formulas short. And I think it is better that the computer works for me instead of me for it.
