Saving a document when a cursor is inside a note will scroll down the document
until the last note is reached. Many users do regularly save their documents
when editing, so this is a really annoying.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the attached document
2. Click inside the first note
3. Enter some text inside the note (to set "document changed")
4. Press Ctrl+S (or select File -- Save)

Expected result: Writer saves the document and the cursor is still in the first
note.
Current result: Writer saves the document and scrolls the document down until
the last note is reached. The cursor is set to the last note.

Open questions: What happens if Writer auto-saves the document and the cursor is
inside a note?

On a user mailing list it has been mentioned that the new transparent selection
in Calc is hardly visible. Although the visualization may be altered together
with the accessibility settings, this may be an issue for many people
(especially if this kind of selection will be integrated in all/other OOo
modules).

The user proposes to provide a user configuration for the visualization of
selection (inverse, transparent).

Proposal by issue reporter: Reduce the transparency of the selection slightly or
increase the thickness of the selection border lines (for high resolution
monitors, large zoom scales).

Reference (German mailing list):
http://de.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=users&msgNo=82157

Reported system: Windows (settings taken from operating system, maybe no issue
on other platforms)

Hi Max! Okay, then let's see what the user say. Would it be possible to better
explain "Field changed" to the user, e.g. say "Note changed"?

The button state is not indicated properly. The examples below are either valid
for a documents with (visible) notes:

A. Button is kept pressed

1. Click on the dropdown button (button is pressed)
2. Move the mouse pointer exactly downwards until the empty sidepane.
3. Click on the sidepane to close the drop-down menu.

Result: The button is still pressed, but the menu is closed and the mouse
pointer is outside the button area.

B. Menu open, but button not pressed

1. Click on the dropdown button (button is pressed, menu is open)
2. Move the pointer exactly horizontally to the right (outside the note)

Result: The button is not pressed, but the menu is open. If the menu is open,
then the button should indicate that by being pressed.

C. Button keeps being pressed although mouse pointer left the button area

Note: Sometimes it works, sometimes not...
1. Move the mouse pointer on the drop-down button (but do not press)
2. Wait a few seconds
3. Move the mouse pointer horizontally to the left (Rather fast!!!)

Result: The button keeps the mouseover status, although the mouse pointer has
been moved away.

1. Reply a note without any selection (the reply is inserted and contains some
descriptive text)
2. Undo the action

Expected Result: The reply note including the content is removed
Current Result: The contained text is removed, but not the note itself

Comments: First undo is described as "Field changed", the second undo as "Insert
note". It seems it is handled like two separate steps - for the user it is one.

1. Open the attached document "2008-12-11_AddingSecondReplyResultsInGap.odt".
2. Reply the first note.
3. (Change back to the document text to avoid a crash which is fixed in >notes7)
4. Again, reply the first note.
Problem: There is a visible gap between the second and the third shown note -
they should belong together.

If the anchor position of the first note is changed (e.g. deleting text,
changing text size), then this problem doesn't occur or the third note does
slightly overlap the second one.

Hi! A discussion considering this topic did again take place at UX discuss:
http://ux.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=2488

It seems that this inconsistency does create some headaches for both our users
and the translators. By the way, the previous descriptions do refer to "Outine",
I think it should be "Outline" (adding a 'l').

Bye, Christoph

@es: Concerning this issue, you're right, but I propose to keep this discussion
in this place because it is a bit later for that. If we finally identify one or
two items, new issues should be created and I will close this one. Okay?

@hfinger: Please consider that we worked for 1,5 years on that and we decided
many things this way, that it will work for a wide variety of users and use
cases. Therefore in some cases, small workarounds will be required for some of
your cases.

>>> What about a single-cell table or similar. This is a real pest when you
want to add underlining, bold, code font = Courier.
Beiing our beloved developers, mod and mba decided it this way considering
technical and functional constraints. Anyway, this discussion is not finished
yet in the i-Team.

>>> What about putting date and name in a single line, instead of one above the
other?
Okay, then we do not have enough place, use initials instead of the full
author's name or we would remove the drop-down button which eases the access for
Mac users (no right mouse button) and beginners (not knowing about a context
menu). This reasons are stated in the requirements.

>>> In this current job, I find that the same Note is required in many places in
the document. It is easier to select and copy the first Note, rather than type
it all out again.
Usually, Copy and Paste should work even for the content. Ctrl+Alt+N for a new
note, Ctrl+V for the content.

>>> Or just clicking on the triangle to select the Note.
>>> Not very important if you can click on the anchor.
For accessibility reaons there should be always an alternative for e.g. keyboard
users. So thinking about functionality requires this to be considered.

>>> I was thinking mainly of shrinking them to perhaps show a line. The reader
could (a) scroll the Note [okay for a few lines] or (b) grab a handle and resize
it to see all the content, perhaps temporarily obscuring neighbouring Notes.
Again, it has been decided to minimize manual interaction. I don't want this to
be changed in the near future, although we have enough substantial user
feedback.

>>> What about RH, LY, or both RH and LH? If Notes alternated in both margins,
and were smaller, you could fit in lots, with less overlap of leader lines.
[...]
This would change the order of the Notes between the text/anchors and the side
pane. And, this kind of visual design has already been implemented for book
layout (two sides paper "touch" each other and only the outter margins can be
used).

>>> Perhaps keep the background colour to indicate the reviewer, but change
border and anchor colour when leader lines clash? Red border relates to red
anchor? [...]
This assumes that you already selected the note (or mouse-over-ed it). We
already provide the "focus feeback" via shadow which will be further improved as
Writer gets better graphic capabilities outside the paper area.

At the moment I would propose that you re-open a new issue for the first item
(selectable text format) to not get lost. All other items have been decided in
the team or need further feedback from our complete user base. Maybe the usage
feedback extension will help here. Okay?

Bye, Christoph

Hi everyone! Some comments on hfingers list...

@ Notes could shrink in height to just enclose short comments [...] could
also automatically expand for longer comments [...]
>>> This is implemented, please refer to the following like (and also have a
look on the picture on the page):
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2_Design_NoteWindowDistribution#Proposal_.22Reduce_Maximum_Height_of_Note_Window.22

@ A Preference or Option would allow you to set the default para style for
Notes. (The current default style is derived from who knows where and is far to
big.) You should also be allowed to apply para and char styles both as
anonymous over-rides or as named styles, e.g. char style Bold or Strong.
>>> The first item is a hot discussed topic. At the moment, Notes are treated
like UI elements of the operating system and so the standard UI font is chosen.
But, it can be altered manually. We still think about how to provide that
setting to the user.

Concerning the paragraph styles, Notes are technically based on graphic elements
(similar to text in Draw). Therefore the behavior differs from the Writer text.
Due to the missing ressources, it is unlikely that this will change.

@ A Preference or Option would allow you to toggle the date or reviewer's name
to be revealed or concealed. This would save space.
>>> We decided against that option, because only few users will benefit from it.
We instead focused on a robust mechanism which will allow a virtually unlimited
number of Notes on one Writer page.

@ A right-click context menu item should allow you to select it to (a) copy it,
(b) cut it, or (c) delete it. It is too difficult to select the anchor point to
carry out these operations.
>>> There is a similar issue i89140 which requests drag-and-drop of Notes. We
still evaluate if moving an anchor is a benefit - especially if we, hopefully,
support anchors for text selections, soon.
Please have a look at the comments in the issue. Since quite some time I wanted
to develop a proposal how to handle that, but I still haven't found the time.
Sorry.

@ A Preference or Option should allow a widthless vertical bar to indicate a
selectable anchor, much as FrameMaker does with the inverted-T anchor for index,
cross-reference targets, and other markers.
>>> It is planned to improve the context menu behavior for anchors in the text,
e.g. integrating the anchors in the context menus in the document text. This may
also solve this issue.

@ Clicking a Note outside the text area, say, on a border, should allow you to
select it, too.
>>> I'm not sure if the text cursor is activated when clicking on the border (at
the moment I lack a working OOo 3.0 installation). But at the moment, there is
no functionality which requires such activation.

@ A selected Note should show handles that can be dragged to change its height,
over-riding the default behaviour, even if it causes a vertical scroll bar to
appear and there is sufficient space to display the Note without resizing it.
This resize should be able to be removed and the Note should then naturally
resize.
>>> As said before, we focused on a - hopefully - natural behavior for the
Notes. Such functionality really adds complexity to the Notes. (But of course we
discussed some idea some time ago, whether a "scrollbar"ed Note should fully
expandable.)

@ Notes Preferences or Options should also allow them to be printed in the
margin as they appear on screen, even if the page width has to be reduced to fit
on the paper. This is what Word does.

I already our plans (or better, my wishes) in issue 94514, that you filed, too.

@ Leader lines from the marginal Note to the in-text anchor points should never
be superimposed on each other -- it is too difficult to trace. Some
suggestions:
  -- vary the leader pattern with dots, dashes, dot and dash chains
  -- vary the colour of the leaders and anchor points (but not the Notes)
  -- let the horizontal portion of leaders be above OR below a line
  -- combine all of the above if necessary
>>> I don't think that introducing more semantics to meta information in Writer
will solve that (think also of Smart Tags, spell checker, grammar checking, ...)
But of course, the anchors are not fully implemented yet (please refer to the
point describing the anchors for text selections). I'm sure there will be some
improvement in some of the future versions.

In the UX team, we discussed the behavior of such anchor lines some time ago and
I created some mockups for that. Unfortunately, I ha

@hfinger: I added your proposal and a rough estimation of pros/cons to the wiki
site (see link below). If we want to further discuss the topic printing outside
this issue, I would like to invite you to the UX discuss mailing list (UX = User
Experience).

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2_Design_Printing#Proposal_.22Print_Notes_Inside_Body_Text.22

Thanks for having a look at the page - this helps a lot. Here, some comments
from my point-of-view:
> I don't think the alternative of Notes embedded in a bulleted
> list are a problem [...]
The reviewer takes care of both the Notes' content and formatting. This should
be preserved, even when printed out. (E.g. somebody copies some kind of ASCII
table to the Note).

> W.r.t. to overlong notes, [...] may I suggest that you
> temporarily increase the para spacing or line spacing [...]
Good idea, but only if people really know that the layout is altered
automatically. Unless we do not have a "Normal" mode like in Word, people might
not be aware of this. And, for overlong Notes we already do have this kind of
behavior - page wise, not paragraph wise (pls refer to the mockups).

> I do not like the idea of repeating a page referred
> to be notes of greater length than the page. [...]
Yes, this is an edge case which is "just" needed for being robust against long
Notes. Most people might never know that this kind of behavior exists, but I'm
open for better proposals. But, I will keep in mind that there is a need for
better recognizability of repeated pages.

> I don't think that there is any particular necessity to preserve the page
formatting next to the notes. [...]
In rare cases yes (possibly this rare case is your standard case). Normally,
users rely on the formatting in WYSIWYG editors.

Thanks for your comments. Bye!

@hfinger: Hi! Concerning your proposal (a) it might be a challenge to insert the
Notes information if there are several paragraphs or a bullet list (presumably
in OOo 3.1). This might strongly interfere with the intention of the user to
structure Notes information. (Assumption: The whole Notes information is
inserted in - or between - the body text, changing its layout.)

For a future design, we developed design proposals for (b) and (c) (see link).
Could you please have a look at it and tell us if this fits your needs? If not,
please describe your point of view "why" something is not sufficient. Thanks a
lot!

The AutoFilter feature (Extras -- Filter... -- AutoFilter) adds dropdown buttons
to the spreadsheet cells. There is no real alternative: using the Standard
Filter in the same menu may remove the AutoFilter controls and does not provide
enough data fields to show the filter criteria (refer to issue #17995).

Proposal: Usually, Alt+CursorDown opens such drop-down menus. In Calc, this key
combination is used to resize the current cell. It may make sense to add a
context sensitive exception here:
* If the cursor is inside a cell with an AutoFilter dropdown, then pressing
Alt+CursorDown will open the drop-down.
* If the drop-down is open, then pressing Alt+CursorUp will close it.

This proposal has been discussed with fl.

This enhancement proposal is based on a discussion at issue #91872

Proposal: If the note date provides "0", then state "(no date)" at the position
of the Notes creation date/time. The corresponding tooltip should provide more
explanation, e.g. "No information on date or time available".

Rationale: If notes are imported from e.g. an old Word version, then the
importer will provide the date information 00/00/00. Neither showing that date
nor hiding that information will help the user to understand what is going on.
And, we should let the Notes look equal.

@cmc: Thanks a lot for looking deeper into that!

@mod: As far as I understand we now have the date information 00/00/00. I think
that neither showing that date nor hiding that information will help the user to
understand what is going on. So if we want to let the Notes look equal and we
have this "reserved" space for that information, I would like to propose how to
fill that information. Even (or because) this is hopefully a rare case.

Proposal: If the note date provides "0", then state "(no date)" at the position
of the Notes creation date/time. The corresponding tooltip should provide more
explanation, e.g. "No information on date or time available". Could that be
realized? --> Separate issue required?

Hi everyone! In general, the time should be shown in the Note Windows.

Optimal solution: If we can identify the initial creation time/date information
of the document, it should be used. The user would be informed that the
"comments" have been inserted before (in contrast to the current time).
Unfortunately, figuring out the exact time is not possible.

Acceptable solution: Leave the current behavior of inserting the current time.

At all, both solutions provide the "wrong time". So I can live with both
solutions. It is up to you...

@mod: Do we need the time information for sorting the Notes (future Navigator
integration)? If we have any other information like Notes numbers (first note
inserted, second note inserted, ...) then this could be transformed to the Notes
time (e.g. incrementing the seconds).

Christoph

Spreadsheet applications do often contain dates data. Currently, users have to
input dates manually which causes additional effort (e.g. when thinking in
calender weeks for open point lists). Therefore, this enhancement proposes a
"Date Picker" for Calc (see rough mockup for details).

The implementation should address:
* date picking
* showing the current date
* visualization of calendar weeks
* visible ranges of valid dates

A first idea is to enhance the "Data -- Validity... -- Criteria -- ..." dialog
to select something like "Use date picker". There are numerous implementations
to look at, e.g. in the Mozilla Calender projects.
If this enhancement is accepted for development, the details should be discussed
by e.g. the UX team.

This feature could also be useful for fields in Writer.

Currently, the StartCenter is shown every time in start module (the empty
OpenOffice.org window). There seems to be demand to manually deactivate the
StartCenter.

Rationale: People may open OpenOffice.org to run their user defined dialogs. In
such a case, the StartCenter may be distracting. Another scenario is the use in
corporate environments and the potential wish of administrators to deactivate it
(for whatever reason).

FL proposed the following implementation: "configuration entry to turn off
start-center [...] No GUI, just a new config item. Default is still "on""

This issue is based on a discussion in the de-users mailing list (German):

The issue has been added to the StartCenter discussion wiki at:

If Notes text is edited in an RTL environment, the cursor position - and
sometimes the text position - may be wrong.

Steps to reproduce:
0. Switch to RTL mode and use western language
1. Create a new document and insert a note
2. Start writing text inside the note

Expected Result: The text is aligned left, the cursor is at the current text
editing position.
Current Result: The text is aligned left, the cursor starts at the right side of
the Note and moves left when more text is inserted (and fills the line towards
the right side). Please refer to the attached screenshot; the black line in the
Note represents the cursor.

Found in build "Win-XP2-374-notes5-install_sets".

The entries should be:
* "Delete All Notes" (for .uno:DeleteAllNotes)
* "Delete All Notes by This Author" (for .uno:DeleteAuthor)
* "Delete Note" (for .uno:DeleteNote)

These entries are a bit different to the ones in the Notes UI, because one of it
will have a placeholder. Because of that I will provide the original user
interface texts for REFERENCE (Context Menu, Drop-Down Menu):
* "Delete All Notes"
* "Delete All Notes by ""
* "Delete Note"
The string is replaced with the author's name of the note, so the
UI string would be "Delete All Notes by Foo Bar".

If the user edits a Note and he executes the hyphenation feature (Tools --
Language... -- Hypenation), then Writer jumps into the document text. The
hyphenation itself is not available within the Notes (e.g. the options are
missing in the Format menu).

Two options for solving that problem: Either...
... make hyphenation work in the Note Windows similar to the document text, or
... disable menu entry in the language sub-menu if the Note has "edit" status.

Found in build "Win-XP2-374-notes5-install_sets".

If the user currently edits a note, then a click on an empty part of the Note
Side Pane does "nothing". A click on the application background (Sun slang
"grüne Wiese") would cause the Notes editing to be finished and return the
cursor to the main text document.

Proposal: Click ("left mouse button") on the Note Side Pane background should
behave similar to a click on the application background.

Found in build "Win-XP2-374-notes5-install_sets".

The background color of the Note Side Pane should be selectable in the color
dialog of: Tools -- Options -- OpenOffice.org -- Appearance -- Text Document.

Reason: Some operating systems (like Ubuntu Linux) change the application
background color. This bright color makes it hard to differentiate between
application background and Note Side Pane background. So the developers of the
operating system should have the change to select an appropriate color.

Open Point: Basically, colors of Note Windows should also be selectable here.

Found in build "Win-XP2-374-notes5-install_sets".

If the user sets the language for a complete paragraph in the Note Window (Tools
-- Language... -- For Paragraph... -- ???), then the text remains selected
although it was not selected before. Using that function in the normal document
text does not select the corresponding paragraph. Notes should behave like
normal document text.

If change tracking is activated and a foreign note is deleted (foreign note:
Note of a different author), then only the color of the cross makes clear who
deleted this foreign note.

Proposal: If the user hovers the text area of the Note Window, then the
information should be made available by tooltip (exact the same behavior like
text document change tracking, but here the whole text area of the Note Window
is used - because here the cross is drawn).

If change tracking is activated and a foreign note is deleted (foreign note:
Note of a different author), then a cross is drawn. If the Note Windows contains
much content, then scrollbars are added. During scrolling, the cross causes
graphic errors - doesn't look too nice :-) Refer to screenshot.

Proposal: If it is not possible to refresh the cross during scrolling without
flickering, then the cross should be deactivated when the scrolling starts and
re-drawn if the users finishes scrolling.

If change tracking is activated and a foreign note is deleted (foreign note:
Note of a different author), then some Notes options are grayed out (disabled).
Currently all options are disabed (refer to screenshot), but only "Delete Note"
should be. The other options may refer to other Notes, therefore they should be
activated.

Please note that this also refers to the context menu of the Note.

@gvsa123: Thank your very much for having a look at the notes! My comments...
> 1. Round Edges / Margin around / Shadow
There was a hard discussion about that. We decided to save space (every pixel is
valuable) and to integrate the notes into the right page border and the side
pane border. In this case, rounded edges cannot be used (issue with border line
integration) - and they are not common on these little sticky notes.

"Some" shadow indication is used for focus indication. Unfortunately, the OOo
framework does not yet provide the necessary capabilities. Example: Issue #88232
or issue #88234

> 2. Encircled Arrow
Sorry, I do not seem to understand this question. What I can say is, that the
anchor is not yet final. Here we finally will use a double arrow (one triangle
below, one above the "point") with some background color. Again, OOo does not
yet provide the ability of this colored background.

> 3. Glossy Button Design
This example seems to be taken from a page with very few of these "buttons". It
looks nice, but does have hard contrasts, dark backgrounds, ... We need provide
a robust solution (here in terms of visual clearance) to let the user focus on
the document (some users have about 20 Notes on one text page). The current
Notes are a compromise in terms of design (e.g. the luminance of all notes
colors and the side pane background is nearly equal).

By the way, I hope that we will provide the look given in:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Image:Notes2_2007-09-08_GeneralMockups_View.png

> 4. Anchors to whole words
Already answered in a comment above: So, any software developers out there???
:-)

> 5. No indication of Notes if the Notes Side Pane is switched off
Yes, you're right. Because of that we will show the notes if a document is
opened and this document contains notes. The user may decide to change the view
afterwards. In the latter case we respect the setting by the user and show
simply nothing. (But OOo still provides: Navigator, Go To Notes, ...)

Thanks again for testing and commenting! Christoph

Hi André, thanks for the reply. Before I start I just want to add that I
understand the demand itself. Every added feature does not only provide added
value to some user, it also provides effort for other users (more learning,
added complexity, ...). So it's important to balance added value and added
effort.

> a note is attached to the wrong context (e.g. the note has been anchored at
> paragraph A but the information rather belongs to paragraph B) the Author /
> reviewer jut likes to corect this mistake (this is what is written in StR22)
... which can easily be solved with the current functionality. It creates manual
effort, but seems a rare case. If a user adds the Note to the wrong context, we
should first focus on our usability before the Note is inserted.

- Author needs to rewrite a paragraph completely but wants to keep the note.
This can easily be achived by dragging the note to another parapragh, rewrite
the paragraph (what would delete the note at the old position), then drag the
note back to the now new paragraph
... here, the user would move the right Notes information to the wrong context
(in document text). And we don't help much if the Note accidentally stays there.
Technically, it is possible to let the user edit the text without deleting the
Note (if the Notes are shown).

> - reorder notes so that they are in a logical sequence (usefull for display in
> side pane and navigator)
Here, the problem is the Navigator, not the Notes itself. I hope it will be
possible to extend the capabilities of the Navigator. Some ideas have been
collected at "Sort and filter notes" at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2_OtherIdeas

> Dragging with the mouse is the more obvious way to the user for following >
reasons:
> - the anchor (triangle) and connection line is a good visible elemnt of the UI

Why should a Note be copied if it refers to a dedicated text block which itself
could be copied (and then should keep the Notes information)?

Here the assumption is, that the people think in "anchors" and not in Notes.
Many other people will just

You are right with the visible elements - but I assume that many people will
also think in "Notes Windows" instead of "Note Anchors" to sort them. That was
the reason to not use anything that could look like "draggable" elements in the
Notes Windows.

> so we would even reduce complexityfor the user (she needsonly to know about
> the
> visible elements and not about the invisible notes position)

If the core requirement is to add additional information (Notes) to certain
sections of text (and both do have a strong link in terms of content), then
there is still no need for this kind of feature.

Maybe we should this discuss that in another place but the Issue Tracker.

Bye, Christoph

Hi! Just for clarification... The "ink comments" seem to refer to handwritten
comments (or just strokes) which can be added to Microsoft Office documents.

You can find some information in the "Handwritten Notes" section on the wiki

Hi André, thanks for your idea! We considered it some time ago - unfortunately -
came to the conclusion to reject it. The main reason is, that we did not find a
use case (or some use cases) that would justify the increased complexity for the
user. Please refer to StR22 at
<http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2_RequirementsFromUseCases>
(Sorry, it has not been translated. But it should not be a problem for you, I
think.)

If you have something in mind that we may have missed, then please explain it -
maybe we have been wrong.

The main reasons for our decision are:
* A Note belongs to content in the text. Moving the reference point (Anchor)
does only make sense if the content in the Note is not dependent on the Anchor -
that should be a rare case. (The Note is different to e.g. a frame or a graphic)
* If the document text is changed, then the Anchor will moved according to the
text (so the manual re-positioning of the Note is not necessary)
* The reference position can changed by copy and paste of the Note or the Note
content (with some manual effort) - so it is possible at all.

I would like to close this issue, but before I would like to have your comment
on that. Thanks a lot! Christoph

@regina: Thanks for reporting. As far as I know, the layout inside the Notes
will change until OOo 3.0 final. I hope that this can be considered.
@rnhainsworth: Thank you, too. Your behavior seems to be a duplicate of issue
#85389 and is more worse with larger UI fonts (unwanted line break).

@mod: 120dpi fonts are kind of accessibility related and therefore presumably
mandatory. Could you please decide how to proceed?

Changed summary.

Hi! I would like to add some more:

For "OpenOffice.org % NEXTVERSION ist nach C:\Dokumente und
Einstellungen\Name\Desktop heruntergeladen worden", the white space seems to
prevent OOo to show the version number and instead shows the text.

In a previous step, OpenOffice.org tells the user where the data will be
downloaded to. In that string, there is backslash inside the file location which
is displayed like "&ndash" (I don't remember exactly - sorry!).

Bye, Christoph

Hi! I discussed this issue with CJ and we decided that it is more a RFE. We
should wait for some further feedback on the Notes. (again: we removed some of
the more special formatting from the context menu along with the "default
formatting".)

@norbert2: Considering consistency across menus, you're right. Here, we assume
that the notes will be used a bit different from document text. (Btw: Thanks for
the report and the graphic - very nice!)

@all: The menu item is not available for two reasons:
1. Clutter free layout (as already mentioned) --> very few standard formatting
options for notes, deactivation using same option again
2. There is no "default formatting" (yet) which can be accessed and/or changed
by users (e.g. character style) --> menu item refers to different behavior in
comparison with document text (but: we still provide the format menu entry and
shortcuts)

I will discuss this issue with CJ again, but this may need some time. I think
the notes work very well (in terms of context menu) so we can ship in any case.

Currently, the presenter screen is a feature in development [1]. I looked
through the specification documents and got some questions concerning the
"visibility" of the feature to the end user. At the moment only seems to
consider usage scenarios of power users who a) know that this feature exists and
b) have access to external monitors in advance.

Example: This feature is important for people who rarely present their work,
e.g. people who present their diploma thesis. It would help those people if
things like notes or the next slide could "simply" be provided. In fact, it
would greatly enhance their experience with OpenOffice.org if this feature
would "just" work.

---
Q: How to enable the feature?

In [2] there is no direct reference how to activate the "Presenter Screen". It
seems that the "Presenter Screen" is activated, if the user selects a
multi-monitor setup in the Slide Show -- Slide Show Settings... dialog.

User do generally think in "features" (or better in: results) instead of
"configuration", therefore many users may not be able to access this feature
because they just don't know about it. Currently the feature is activated
"implicitly".

---
Q: How to enable the use of "other" screens?

The descriptions in [3] state, that other screens can be selected if they are
present on the system. This seems to neglect the usual usage scenarios for
giving presentations. Very often, people do not have the chance to test and set
the configuration in advance, e.g. setup the computer during conference
presentations, people which do not own a second screen, waiting audience in the
business environment.

It would be great if the configuration would provide something like "make
automatic use of the presenter screen if more than one screen is present on the
system" instead of "you can only select a second screen if there is already one
connected to the system".

---

I'm sorry if any of the given information is incorrect. I did not have the
chance to test this feature in the "real word" because of the lack of a second
monitor.

Idea collection:
* State the feature "Presenter Screen" more prominently in the UI.
* Make it possible to let the user select the use of the "Presenter Screen" in
advance (although there may be only one monitor present on the system).
* Try to automatically detect the monitors suitable for the "Presenter Screen"
and the "Presentation View" and use them.
* If the user does not want to use that configuration, make it possible to
disable it or re-configure the screens in the "Presenter Screen".

Thank you!

[Issue data has been moved from issue #85870 to cover the more general aspects
of the visibility of the Notes Side Pane.]

The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.

Current behavior: If there are no Notes in the document, then changing the
setting “View – Notes” will not show the Note Side Pane nor any Notes. This does
not correspond to a fundamental law of interaction design: providing feedback on
actions. So this may lead to usability issues with that functionality.

Proposed behavior (Please note that this issue does NOT fully describe the
desired behavior. It is intended to give you some ideas how this could be
implemented. Please refer to the specifications in the Notes2 wiki for more
information or contact me directly.):
If a document is opened which contains Notes, then both Notes Side Pane and
Notes are shown (Notes – View is activated)
If a document is opened which does not contain Note(s), then the Notes Side Pane
is not shown (Notes – View is deactivated)
If no Note(s) are contained in the document, the Notes Side Pane is not shown
and the user activates Notes – View, then the Notes Side Pane will be shown.
If a Note is inserted and the Note Side Pane is not shown, then both Note
Windows and Note Side Pane will be shown (Notes – View is activated).
If the Note Side Pane is shown and all Notes are deleted (deleted: no Note
present in the document), then the Note Side Pane will stay open. (Notes – View
will remain active) (Currently, the Note Side Pane is closed automatically if no
Note is present in the document.)

The proposed behavior tries to first address the needs of the user (e.g. when
opening the document) and will then try not to be too 'smart'.

Please note: It may be very useful, if the visibility of the Notes and the Note
Side Pane could be controlled in a more direct manner. This may include a
control element in the horizontal ruler bar (please refer to the specification
in the Notes2 wiki), an entry for the Note Side Pane context menu or a context
menu entry for the Writer background “Wiese”. Please contact me when you start
to work on that proposals.

[Issue data has been copied from the collection of issues in #85870]

SETTING THE LANGUAGE DOES NOT WORK AT ALL (SELECTED TEXT / PARAGRAPH / ALL TEXT)
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.

Writer provides several ways to change the language of a portion of text or the
complete document:
the menu “Tools – Options – Language Settings – Languages: Default languages for
documents”
the application menu “Tools – Language – For Selection OR For Paragraph OR For
all Text”
the status bar by using the context menu.
No one of these options do work in the Notes.

Steps to reproduce (languages are just examples):
1.Create a document and enter some German words (make sure that the document
language is still English)
2.Create a Note and enter some German words
3.Change the document language by: “Tools - Language – For all Text: German
(Germany)”

Expected result: The automatic spellcheck marks do disappear because the correct
language is now set properly.

Current result: Nothing happens and the spellchecking marks will remain in BOTH
Notes Windows and document text.

4.Move the focus to the document text
5.Change the document language by: “Tools - Language – For all Text: German
(Germany)”

Expected result: The automatic spellcheck marks do disappear because the correct
language is now set properly for all elements.

Current result: The automatic spellcheck marks dissappear in the document text,
BUT nothing happens in the Notes Windows. There, the language is not changed.

PLEASE NOTE: It has NOT yet decided by the iTeam how to handle language settings
which refer to the whole document.
The following behavior are just rough ideas:
1.If the user wants to change the language setting for the whole document, then
the Notes should respect this setting like the document text does (change of
language setting: e.g. “Default languages for documents” or “For all Text”).
[Open Questions: Does this interfere with the specification to adapt the
formatting of time and date of the Note Property Data according to the system
language? Can we make sure that the user really wants to use the same language
in the text?]
2.If the user changes the setting for the document or the whole text, then only
the setting for the normal document text changes. The language setting for the
Note Windows is inherited from the OpenOffice.org language setting. In general,
the user will be able to change the language in the Notes Windows; but only for
one Note Window, paragraphs or selections.

Please contact the iTeam which behavior should be implemented.

WRONG STATE OF SPELLCHECKING TOOLBAR SYMBOL IF FOCUS IN NOTE WINDOW
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.

The toolbar symbol which toggles the automatic spellchecking does not work as
expected when a Note Windows has the focus (focus: cursor is located in a Note
Window).

Steps to reproduce:
1.Create a document and enable automatic spellchecking (button of automatic
spellchecking is pressed)
2.Create a Note and enter some text (maybe with spelling mistakes)
3.Change the focus from the Note Window to the document text and back to the
Note Window

Expected behavior: The button for automatic spellchecking keeps activated,
because the spellchecking marks can be seen in both the document and the Note
Windows.

Current behavior: The button for automatic spellchecking changes it's state
(document text = on; Note Window = off).

In contrast, the option in “Tools – Options – Language Settings – Writing Aids:
Check spelling as you type” works as expected.

~~~
Furthermore, the state of the spellchecking toolbar symbol can not be changed
when clicking on it.
Steps to reproduce (use the document created in the steps above)
4.Set the cursor in the Note Window, the Note Window has now the focus.
5.Click on the symbol automatic spellchecking
Expected behavior: Spellchecking can be turned off/on.
Current behavior: The button for automatic spellchecking can not be activated
(pressed) and spellchecking will remain activated.
CALLING THE MANUAL SPELLCHECKING FROM THE SPELLCHECKING CONTEXT MENU
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.
There seems to be a related problem with the spellchecking dialog: Unknown words
are underlined and can be right-clicked to open the usual spellchecking dialog.
This dialog offers “Spellchecking...” which does nothing at the moment.
Normally, the manual spellchecking will be run.
@all: I think there is some "misunderstanding" between activation and enabled
state. In my first text the activation refers only to "checked" and "unchecked"
state of the entry View -- Notes.
In general, this issue is about usability. The newest proposed behavior (and
therefore the issue title) does only cover one aspect and I disagree (in this
particular case) with the deactivation ("graying out") of menu entry at all.
Question: Why do we want to prevent the user from opening the Note Side Pane?
(For later version, think of a Note Side Pane context menu for creating new
Notes, or the "New Note Placeholder". Then, the Note Side Pane should be
accessible even without Notes in the current document.)
@mod: Looks good to me. The shading makes sense so that we are at least
consistent with the other OOo components. The user "gets" the idea of the fields
(although the behavior in all OOo components should be consistent, sigh).
Thanks!
@mod: Just for clarification: the solution would be to prevent the user to
delete several notes at once. If yes, the user (and I) will not understand why
one foreign note can be deleted, but not several. Is there any way to fix the
general behavior instead of "randomly" deactivated functionality?
@all: removed wish for enhancement
Hi everyone! I discussed that behavior with CJ and we think that we should stick
with the current behavior (for the Notes). But, if we leave the Note with ESC,
then the current selection should be removed, too. (This is already planned, as
far as I know.)
Reason: First removing the selection and not leaving the Note does create
another "mode". Modes should be avoided here, because the behavior of user
actions is interpreted depending on the context. The user should reliable exit
the Note.
@rainer: Would you please file another bug for Calc, if this is important for
you. For the Writer and the Notes, this is no issue anymore. Sorry!
It is possible to have selections in the text and the Note Window although
"standard" selection has been activated. In any case, only the selection in the
Note Window is "active" for editing/formatting/...
Steps to reproduce:
0. Select standard selection mode "STD" (default)
1. Create a new document and enter some text
2. Create a new note and enter some text
3. Go back to the document text and select some
4. Select some text in the Note
Intermediate result: Now, two selections are present.
5. Select some formatting, e.g. "bold".
Expected result: Text in both selections is formatted.
Current result: Text in the Note Window is formatted. The text in the document
stays unchanged.
Issue found in build "edgy-jdk-3800-notes3-install_set".
ESC exits the Note in any case. Sometimes it may be desired that ESC first
removes a selection instead of "just quitting" the Note.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document
2. Create a new note and enter some text
3. Select some of the text inside the Note
4. Press ESC
Current behavior: The focus changes from the Note to the document text.
Proposed behavior: The selection is removed, but the focus stays in the Note.
Pressing ESC without a current selection exists the Note.
Addtional information: The current behavior is identical to the behavior in the
Outliner of e.g. Draw objects. Nevertheless users may prefer the proposed
behavior, because it is more consistent with the Writer document text (here:
people think in Writer, not in Draw).
If a long hyperlink is inserted it is converted to a field (by the AutoCorrect
functionality). If the hyperlink is very long, then the field width (which
behaves like a single character) may be larger than the current Notes Window
width. Problem: The field does not look like a field and the corresponding
cursor "disappears" (please refer to screenshot).
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document
2. Insert a Note
3. Insert the text "http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Notes2"; (do not add
a space or press enter). Now, the text is about 1,5 lines long.
4. Press space
Expected behavior: The characters of the text get "hyperlink" formatting
(formatting: appearance and link target). The text is still 1,5 lines long.
Current behavior:
* The text is converted to a field and placed in one line. The rest of the
hyperlink is "visually" cut off, because the field width is greater than the
current Note.
* The cursor is placed after the field in line 1 and disappears.
* The user has no clue that this is a field, because the field shading is not
shown (gray background like in Writer). So she/he is inable to edit the text.
* The user is unable to see where the link refers to, because the tooltip for
the hyperlinks do not work in Notes; refer to issue #??? (This may also be a
security issue, because only a part of the link is accessible to the usual
user.)
Proposed behavior:
1. Similar behavior like in the Writer document with single characters. The
preferred solution.
- or -
2. Use field shading and visualize that the field is truncated (e.g. by using
"..." at the end). Make sure that the user can see the cursor (e.g. place the
cursor at the margin of the Note Window instead at the "invisible" end of the
field).
Issue found in build "edgy-jdk-3800-notes3-install_set".
Behavior in the Document text: Ctrl+Click opens hyperlinks. The user is informed
Hi! I do also think that this is not necessary - if we can provide a good
alternative as also discussed in issue #87086
The reasons are:
* (same reason like es stated already): the already huge context menu will be
enlarged
* some people do not even know that a context menu exists
* some platforms (like Mac OS X) often require to use a modifier key to access a
context menu
I would even go farther and propose to remove the corresponding item from the
Calc context menu (for consistency reasons). So I will set the issue to
"wontfix".
@mod:
Does that mean, that the selection will also be shown with another selection in
the document text? Or is it removed if the user selects text in the document?
Will it be possible to make several "working" selections across notes (working:
all selected contend responds to editing or formatting).
Example: select text in the note, leave the note, use Ctrl+X --> the selected
text is cut. Does this work?
The functionality should be clear. Currently, the notes behave as little
separate objects and therefore should not claim that they work like the normal
text document. Therefore I propose to remove the selection after exiting the
note. (I will discuss the search&replace via email.)
By the way: Currently it is possible to first select text in the document and
then in the Note Window. Separate issue?
>> removing a note could be simplified by adding a small cross on the top right
>> corner of each note could be cool
Hi! This would be cool, but does not seem to work well. What action should be
bound to the little cross: close a note or delete a note? If we delete it, the
the user may think there is a way to restore the information. It looks like a
little window (which can be restored), but would not behave like one.
We thought about introducing a kind of "trash" icon for the Notes.
Unfortunately, you cannot find one valid representation for all platforms. So we
decided to just use "plain" text and improve the little drop-down menu. Click
(hold), move, release. One click plus movement to delete a Note.
Even Word requires the user most of the time to click twice: context menu,
delete. One click in the toolbar to delete a focused note? Don't forget to set
the cursor inside this note - some (small) additional effort.
@es: There are several requests for that functionality "hidden" in previous
issues. And, thanks for adding the link to the wiki page!
@all: Sadly, the current priority for that is relatively low - there are more
urgent issues in the basic functionality to solve at the moment. By the way, we
will soon implement searching for the Notes' content, This would address "filter
content of the Notes".
@es: I briefly discussed the idea cj some time ago. The goal with the current
implementation is, to integrate it without the need of another toolbar.
Therefore it does not show up in the wiki.
@all: The functionality you requested is handled separately in Writer (revision
functionality, Note functionality). From the user's point of view it is very
similar - I completely agree!
Last week I started a discussion with cj if there is some interest in
integrating Notes and revision functionality. I have no final answer yet (and
unfortunately it is unlikely anytime soon).
If we look at the Notes, there is no need for another (floating) toolbar.
Toolbars are completely separated from the context, the Note, and are often
"lying around" without any good reason :-) Therefore managing the Notes should
take place at the Note itself (e.g. the drop-down menu). You proposed such
contextual actions in issue #87086.
Navigation will be handled with the current functionality available in the
Navigator and the previous/next buttons in the Writer window. This functionality
is already available at a fixed place.
I don't know what issue is solved by selecting the color for the author - today
it is handled automatically. Do you want the same author to get the same color
after re-opening a document? Or do you have anything in mind which I don't
understand? Anyway, as far as I know, the color of the author is handled across
the OOo modules, therefore it does not refer to the current document only.
If we stick with the current functionality there is no need for the toolbar. Do
you agree? Bye!
Hi, nice idea! This reply contains: Clarification of the request, discussion of
advantages/disadvantages, alternative implementation (there is already a
solution which seems to address the same problem).
===
Just for clarification of the request:
* If text is selected in the document text, then double-clicking on the Note
Side Pane should create a new Note. The Note Anchor Area will contain the
previously selected document text.
* If no text is selected in the document text, then double-clicking on the Note
Side Pane will create a note. Like planned, the Notes algorithm decides if the
Note Anchor will refer to a point or an area.
@pagalmes: Is this correct?
---
Advantage: The direct relationship/interaction with the Notes' home.
Disadvantages:
* The functionality is not well discoverable/understandable. Some people do not
even know about double clicking at all.
* As es already mentioned, some description is necessary to make it
discoverable. Unfortunately, the Note Side Pane moves together with the document
- where to place the "hint"?
* The functionality is only available when there is enough space to show the
Note Side Pane background (space to place the mouse cursor).
* It is hard for the user to anticipate the position of the new Note Window
(e.g. the user selects document text at the bottom of the screen, but
double-clicks at the top. The user may expect the Note to show up at the top,
but it would be placed at the bottom.)
---
Alternative implementation:
Some time ago I proposed to add a little placeholder to the Note Side Pane
(similar to the text frames in Impress). This placeholder should be placed at
the current height of the text cursor, please refer to
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Image:Notes2_2007-09-08_GeneralMockups_View.png
Some of the issues mentioned above are solved here (no double-clicking, better
discoverability, clear position). The developer mod told me, that an
implementation in the Notes Window distribution algorithm is difficult. We will
continue to discuss the issue and consider your proposal.
@es, pagalmes: Does that proposal address the problem?
===
In any case, thank you for your support!
Selections seem to be stored inside Note Windows. If the user tries to re-select
text, the user may accidentally move text from Notes to other Notes or the
document text. Together with some problems in the Undo functionality, this leads
to really messed up documents, refer to issue #87072.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document
2. Insert a note and enter some (large amount) text
3. Select some of the text in the Note (and please remember the position of the
selection)
4. Go back to the document text (the selection is not shown anymore)
5. Hover the mouse pointer over the Note (inside the previous selection area)
6. Press the left mouse button and move the mouse to select a new area
Expected result: A new selection is made.
Current result: The previous selection (of step 3) re-appears and Writer changes
to mode "Drag-and-Drop". If the user releases the mouse button, the text is
inserted at a wrong position.
Proposed behavior: Remove a selection when the Note is exited.
Additional information: Found in build "edgy-jdk-3796-notes3".
Undo does not respect the "combined" action of "cut" and "paste" when
drag-and-drop text from the Notes Windows to the document text.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document
2. Insert a document, enter some text
3. Select some of the text inside the Note
4. Drag-and-Drop the selection to the document text
5. Use the "undo" functionality
Expected result: The text that was inserted in the document is deleted and added
back again to the Note. To remove the text from the document text, another
"undo" is required.
Current result: The text stays in the document. The previously "cut" text is
correctly put back to the Note.
Additional information: Found in build "edgy-jdk-3796-notes3".
The combination "Notes Windows with scrollbar", scrolling of Note content and
changing between document text and Note causes a weird combination of: scrollbar
position and expected cursor position.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the attached document
2. Go into the first note and set the cursor to line '20'.
3. Go back to the text.
4. Move the mouse pointer over the first note and use the mousewheel to scroll
the note content to the top
5. Click on line '10'.
Expected result: The cursor is set to line 10 in the Note Window.
Current result: The cursor is set to line 14. The Note content has moved, but
the scrollbar still shows "top of the note content".
Additional information: Found in build "edgy-jdk-3796-notes3".
The blinking cursor indicator is shown at the wrong line after inserting a
manual line break which causes the height of a Note Window to increase. The
weird thing: the position of the "real" cursor is correct.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document
2. Insert a new note
3. Insert the following text (ENTER = return key): 1 ENTER 2 ENTER 3 ENTER 4
ENTER
Expected behavior: The Note Window is resized and the blinking cursor indicator
is shown at the beginning of the (newly added) last text line.
Current behavior: The Noe Window is resized and the blinking cursor indicator is
moved to the beginning of the current line (line '4'). Weird: Start typing
inserts the text in the newly added line.
Additional information: Found in build "edgy-jdk-3796-notes3".
