Using Ctrl-Enter, it is possible to enter newlines in a cell, which is important
for formatting.

However when a *single* cell containing is pasted into another cell, it silently
writes to *multiple* cells. This is not only incorrect, it can result in *data
loss* for the user.

This may be difficult to solve because of the data transfer format used for
spreadsheets, however there must be some way to encode the source data so that
it pastes correctly within StarCalc (and ideally StarWriter also).

ColmS - Frank: I assigned the task to the IBIS default owner which is Oliver
Craemer.

I've found a workaround; if I double-click on the cell (to put the cursor/caret
into the cell) and then paste, it works ok. Now I'm not sure if this is a bug or
a feature!

To reproduce:
1) In an empty cell, type A, then ctrl-Enter, then B, then Enter
2) Select the text of the cell (not the cell itself); this can be done either in
the Formula bar or by double-clicking the cell and then selecting the cell's
entire text
3) Now click on another cell and paste the text. A will appear in the first
cell and B will appear _in the cell just below it_.

Workaround: However if you put the caret into the cell (double click on the
cell, or use the formula bar) and then paste, it inserts all the text into that
one cell.

I accept that the Floating Frame is an OLE object.

However there are several issues when creating a floating frame containing an
image and using no scrollbars:
- I get the resize cursor at the edges of the image but I can't resize
- I get scroll bars for Draw
- the frame is the wrong size (it should default to the size of the Draw
document)
- the embedded Draw document is the wrong size (it should default to the size of
the image)
- I cannot get a context menu or resize cursor for the frame (Draw object)

Database != file. A database has a schema, forms, and may reside on a server (in
which case it almost always consists of multiple files).A database is a logical
entity. A file is a physical entity.

The use cases I mentioned in my initial comment are perfomred on attributes of
the database design, it's content (data), and desktop-based information (forms).

Users don't even want to think of documents as files, so why should they want to
think of something even more abstract (like a database) as a file? A database is
not a file even to a technical user, except in the rare case of the single-file
database.

By all means involve the I-team but I think you need to justify why a database
is a file. I just want to refer to it as a database which I think is not a
difficult or unusual term for what is a database!

ColmS - FS: To your previous comment, I think it is correct that databases
should be usable as simply as files can be used, but that does not mean they are
files or that they should be called files.

To your most recent comment, I agree with you that most _current_ StarOffice
users know that documents are files because our product is still too difficult
to use for non-technical users. However the future of office productivity is to
hide files fom the user (e.g. the user should be able to manage file permissions
(share my document with other users) from within StarOffice without using the
system file manager/explorer). The File menu is a legacy of the old concept
which will probably stay, but new users will forget what it really means.

The problem is certainly larger than I described, but I still think it is
worthwhile to have more consistent terminology in the most important ways to
launch Base

It is somewhat amazing that we didn't search for Data Source in the
translation database before completing the specification.

1. Insert/Floating Frame
2. Set the frame content to be an image

There seem to be two problems
1) [BUG] the image is shown as a Draw OLE object with scrollbars (it should just
show the image)
2) [BROKEN] the entire frame contents may stop being drawn; instead, you see the
contents of whatever window was last on top of (or covering) the frame

Fetching images, style-sheets and other secondary files should not use the Solar
mutex because it makes the UI freeze while fetching them.

To reproduce, paste a HTML document containing web-based images from a browser
into StarOffice.

I believe this should simply be Administer Database or more simply Open

- edit data
- edit table and query design
- edit forms
- work with databases that are file-based or server-based

This is confusing. A clearer text would be Exit Full Screen view, Return to

SO7 had Full Screen On/Off which was better but ambiguous.

For comparison, Windows Media Player uses an icon. Word Viewer uses Close Full

The document attachment for i41226 is a 2-column layout. Even when I turn off
View/Text-Boundaries, a pale grey border is shown around the text in both
columns (*and also around the header image*).

The text does not appear to be in a text frame, so I do not understand why the
borders are displayed.

This is a read-only mode, so it should be possible to use an offscreen image
buffer to prevent the image flicker. Even better, scrolling should be done using
video-card (framebuffer) operations (especially valuable on Sunray).

1. Close down any existing instance of StarOffice
2. Open the attached Excel spreadsheet
3. The progress bar in the Loading dialog will stop at 100% for over 25
seconds

The solution is to display the main Calc window while loading the document.

I have outlined a proposal for keyboard options for AutoCorrect in Calc
(i41309). I believe this proposal would also work well for Writer.

There is no keyboard support for using AutoCorrect. It should be easier to
modify a string proposed by AutoCorrect (proposal). It should also be possible
to select an alternate AutoCorrect proposa.

- End (set input cursor to end of the highlighted AutoCorrect proposal)
- Home (set input cursor to start of the highlighted AutoCorrect proposal)
- Left/Right Cursor keys - move input cursor back and forth within the
AutoCorrect proposal
- Up/Down Cursor keys - show the previous/next AutoCorrect proposal

You can find it in the documentation for the View menu: this is the second item
that appears if you search for vertical ruler using the Search Find tab.

Note that the documentation elsewhere talks about enabling Vertical Ruler using
Tools/Options/Writer, but I think it makes more sense to include it on the View
menu alongside the regular Ruler because it makes it very easy for the end-user
to change the margins using WYSIWYG.

the intended wrap behaviour is No Wrap.

Text displays through the image screenshots throughout the entire document.

StarOffice shows a 3 large black bullets, but the second bullet is shown
(correctly) small but (incorrectly) orange (like the text).

See the attached document and the 256-colour BMP files word-bullets.bmp and

Yes, but users found it in StarOffice/OpenOffice.org because we have a Stylist
feature, not because we named it Stylist.

For the Stylist we have a help index entry: Stylist; see Styles and Formatting
window

Existing users will easily find the new feature, and new users will more easily
find it with the new name.

StarOffice has some Insert menu items without ellipses. SO-8 now adds some more.
Here is a complete list:
- Hyperlink
- Movie and Sound
- Floating Frame

Hyperlink could be argued to be a non-modal dialog, but in practice most users
use it modally.

I've targetted this for undetermined as I don't know if Tech Pubs/L10n can do
it.

Excel's Data Validation is harder to use and has less features than
StarCalc's Data Validity. See below for analysis from Paul.Kuckein (Sun).

Comments:
---
-- The principal difference between StarCalc's Data - Validity function with
Excel's Data - Validation function lies in the additonal items on the Allow
pull-down list on the first tab:

-- Excel has two additional items -- List and Custom

-- List allows the user to reference a range on the spreadsheet containing
specific values to be tested against. In addition, a check box appears,
allowing the useer to specify that the list values appear as an In-cell
dropdown. This makes the creation of dropdown lists for data entry in a cell
extremely easy, especially as compared with StarCalc.

-- Custom allows the entry of a formula which checks the value entered into
the cell. (The text box for the entry of the formula may reference a cell or
range on the spreadsheet.)

-- In addition, the Apply these changes to all other cells with the same
settings check box allows easy updates to the validation criteria.

I hope that this helps. As the frequent questions regarding pulldown lists for
data entry in StarCalc indicate, the List function with the In-cell dropdown
is a much-neeeded enhancement for SatrCalc. What Paolo wants to do would be
easy in Excel; it is much more difficult StarCalc.

You're 100% right; it's possible to use the right cursor to confirm the change
without moving the cursor down which was triggering the re-focus.

You can reproduce this using only Writer

0. Start Writer
1. Display the Main toolbar
2. Long-click on the Show Draw Functions button
3. Select a drawing operation and draw it in your document
4. Repeat step 3 a few times
5. Now try to drag the cursor to select the drawing objects; it fails
6. Next try to use shift-click to select multiple drawing objects; it fails

Both 5 and 6 should work.

Paste of an Alt-PrtScr image directly into StarOffice works; the clipboard type
is then Bitmap.

Pasting the same image from MSPaint fails because by default the clipboard type
becomes Bitmap Image.

Even with MSPaint, you can use our Paste Special to select Bitmap, but this is
not the default type.

I think you mixed up left and right in your response.

This mechanism is completely non-standard. The correct UI methods for the two
options are:
1. single click to *select* object (field)
2. double-click to open/edit the object

The left-pointing arrow is only one pixel away from the short-cut title (e.g.
Ctrl-N on File/New).

This sub-menu is rather unusual because it has a shortcut. In my view there are
two possible fixes for this problem:
1. increase the spacing of the arrow from the short-cut title
2. move the shortcut title (Ctrl-N) to the menu item for the actual document
type, e.g. New/Text Document. This has the extra benefit that it makes it clear
which document type is being created, however it has the downside that it must
be different for each application.

If you insert a field and then double-click on the right-most pixels of the last
character, it will not open. This is visible more often when the field is small
(has little data), e.g
- formula =1+1 (can only open by clicking on the left 2-3 pixels)
- blank document title (this is *impossible* to open)
