In the version OpenOffice.org3.01 OOO300m15(Build:9379) for Windows this bug 
does not appear any more.

@mru: It was only a view issue. After reloading, the BC was shown correctly... 
if this helps to undestand

Sorry for reporting an allrdy fixed bug - Next time I will try updating first...

2009 ---
When 2 word processor table cells (above each other) backgroundcolour is set, 
then this cells are fused and then the backgroundcolour of the resulting cell 
is changed again only the top part (the area of the previously top cell) 
changes. The bottom part stays the previously selected backgroundcolour.

This at least happens when there are non vertical fused cells remaining in the 
2 table lines corresponding to the 2 fused cells.

After reloading file it is shown correctly.
