If you want to write something like (x=3) where x=3 is a formula object or you
put a graphical object in a sentence with a period behind OO seperates the two
elements when reaching the end of a line.

The sentence: Here goes an OBJECT.

Could be sepearated between "OBJECT" and "." though there is no space between 
them.

Okay, thats a thing I should have tried. But didn't. I would suggest either to
add a "Text Select Tool" which is the standard tool. Like in graphic programs.
Or to simply use the highlight button as an ON/OFF switch. One click activates
another click deactivates. The would be no problem because the color chooser can
be accessd by the downwards arrow.

If you select the hightlighting tool. One click on the toolbar. The cursor
changes to a paint bucket an you are able to highlight text. You now can not get
easyly back to text sleect mode. A second click on the bucket symbol should do 
this.
