yes. the OOo saves documents without correct name extension. i checked tools - 
options - OOo - general and it has a check mark in use OOo dialogs under 
open/save dialogs. OOo writes keeps saving my files with unknown extension 
although files (i.e. the ones i attached) open properly when i choose the right 
program from the list given to me by windows. it does the same issue when i try 
to export file to PDF. tried to system restore to an earlier date when OOo 
writer works well but still havent resolved issue.

- downloaded and installed unexpired trial version of microsoft publisher to 
read publisher files; windows installed MS office update
- save-export error in open office occured after MS office update
- saving .odt file also tried exporting to PDF but yields unknown file
- system restored to point prior to MS update - no change; saves to unknown 
file still
