OD,

Thanks for the status update. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Microsoft has a small team of people working full-time on the layout code of
Word, and I think you guys need it too. The layout code is the core! (I used to
work there.)

If any of you has power, ask for more resources. OpenOffice is great, but
flooded in bugs.

Yes, I think it is a defect as well and I'm glad you will look into it.

I also just wanted to clarify that after more research I think there are 2
defects in here.

Thanks.

I've worked for several years on this book. The problem is that the number of
pages changes without me doing anything.

Rather than attaching my ODT to this, I'm linking to it here.
http://keithcu.com/BookOO/SoftwareWars.odt

OO Writer has worked very well other than this bug.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks very much for looking into
this.

As per the comments from OD at the bottom of
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=105447

I have created this new bug to track the issue I have found.

Furthermore, I'll just add that I'm sure it is an OO bug, and the problem is not
caused by the fact that I created impossible / conflicting formatting.

OD,

I knew you weren't suggesting that my document had screwed up formatting. I just
wanted to put that information into the bug report for anyone else who might
read it.

Glad to know you can repro the problem. (ES: opening the document and then doing
a repagination often causes the number of pages to change. It isn't so easy to
repro because sometimes it does things right, sometimes it does things wrong.)

Thanks for your hint. I did some investigation because and noticed that the
caption style has a do not split paragraph set. I can turn that property off.

But I do think there must be a bug that is causing multiple empty pages to be
created because there should be plenty of space even given that constraint. The
paragraphs with that property set are just a few lines long and so it is not
creating a difficult situation. I format the pictures to have enough space even
with the constraints I create, and so there is no at all reason for multiple
empty pages.

OD,

I unset that property on the caption style, and things seem to work better now.
I will consider enabling widow/orphan control.

That is a perfectly fine workaround for me. But I did waste many hours on this
bug nudging the formatting to make the empty pages go away, so I do think this
bug should be looked into.

Thanks.

I've done some more testing, and even when I turned off do not split paragraph
property on the caption style I still see multiple empty pages.

Search for smirking face and see if you can't get multiple empty pages above
the picture.

I ran into this problem as well. I publish my book using OpenOffice, and the
file size went from 17 MB to over 68 MB. The bug happened in my upgrade from OO
3.1 to 3.11.

Thanks for looking into this! I live in OO, probably more the developers! ;-)

I just wanted to say that this bug should be increased in priority.

If a word processor doesn't have the same layout from one second to the next, it
is pretty broken! Sometimes it makes my book 302 pages, sometimes 320 pages. It
inserts empty pages, etc., etc.

If someone needs more information, I'm happy to provide it.

I have discovered that none of the replacement fonts are on my system. What
fonts gets used then?

I have also discovered that normal view printing is using a different font than
slideshow view. Simply pressing F5 changes the fonts on my slide. Is that
possible?

Maybe slideshow view has a different codepath for the font it chooses when none
of the font doesn't exist on the computer.

I agree that there could be a font with screwed up metrics, especially as the
same letters seem to screw up on every slide. However, I cranked up Krita and
went through all of the fonts on my computer and couldn't reproduce the problem
with any of them displaying The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog. It
should show a screwed up i, r, w, J m o etc, and I didn't ever see that in its
view as I arrowed down through every font.

Hmmm.

I can repro this with a default install of Ubuntu + OpenOffice 2.02.

I got a file which contained vera as the font. The display looks fine in normal
mode, but when I change to slideshow, the spacing is all garbled. Including the
file and a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about.

There are 100s of millions of people who have spent YEARS in word and if you
want to take marketshare you should try to make the transition smooth. Also,
hotkeys are a good thing and save time.

Also, the menus and toolbars and the contents of many dialog boxes look exactly
like word so it isn't accurate to say you don't have word compatibility as a
goal.

Word has a ton of hotkeys that millions of people know and you guys should
consider using them.

For example:
ctrl-+ - superscript
ctrl-- - subscript
ctrl-K - smallcaps
ctrl-A - allcaps

default formatting should be ctrl + space, not shift space, I believe.

I insert lots of hyperlinks and it would be good to have a hotkey for that.

I no longer run word so I don't know what I'm missing, but Office is very
popular and you will make it easy for people to transition over if you make it
behave the same, especially in cases where you aren't using the hotkeys
currently.
