Update:
I've noticed that Go-Oo 2.4.x offers Office Open XML import (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go-oo#Filetype_support ) out of the box, but has
some other disadvantages.

I have not tried OOo 3.0.x out with KernelEx, although the most desirable new
functionality in 3.0 is the new Notes implementation.

This should be good news to those who use legacy systems, such as Windows 98/Me.

On an offtopic note, is there any plan to implement ODF1.2 read support in
OOo2.4.x, just as ODF 1.1 read support was done for OOo1.1.5?

The KernelEx page for OOo 3.0 reports that 0.3.6 seems to cooperate with OOo
3.0, but with some reservations -- http://x86.neostrada.pl/KernelEx

OOo 3.0 for Windows 9x is important, as it's the only free software office
package I know that would allow reading MSO2007 files.

Advanced users may convert to or create a dual-boot environment with a
lightweight Linux or BSD system, but this would be a stretch for everyone else.
Note that many computers that are well able to run Windows XP were sold with
Windows 98 or Me preinstalled.

I wonder how Mac people with older and capable hardware that's forced to be with
older OS X's feel like...

[installation-issues] [Issue 78568] remove superfluous diction aries from distribution

I expected this to have been solved by version 2.4 (which is unfortunately the
last branch to work in Windows 98/Me; OT: I hope there will be a chance that 2.x
will be developed further until 3.0 hasn't come out yet and that there would be
chance for a 3.0 in W98).

Removing from download might not be so good, but the possibility to choose
dictionaries upon installation is more useful, since if someone will later need
a dictionary, they can download it separately anyway.

Currently I have to remove dictionaries and edit the dictionaries.lst file by
hand every time I install a new/er version.

In addition, some users might prefer some dictionaries over others; the
possibility of having individual dictionaries in individual user profiles might
be useful only when one users uses one language dictionary and another user uses
another language dictionary. If both use the same dictionary, it would be shared
(don't know how this could be implemented, if different users might have to do
with various user privileges).
