If I check "Use printer metrics for text formatting" in the
Options-->Calc-->General tab, this problem is solved.

Suggestion: set this option to "on" as default in new installations.

This flaw is still unfixed in the latest Calc version (3.1.1)

I've seen it on 3 different brands of computers over several years now. Why is
there no action on this?

Still apparent on a newer computer with 4GB RAM and running fully patched Vista.
Had to go to "optimal zoom" to see it. Did not occur at 100% zoom.

If I change the default path for opening documents (the 'My Documents" path) to
W:\writerdocs — it is ignored. The change is saved in the Options, but when you
go to File-->Open, the program still looks in the old default location of
[User]\Documents.

This setting worked in the previous version of OO.

Quitting OO completely by restarting Quickstarter does not help.
Restarting Windows after the change does not help.

Bug apparent when opening docs from Writer or Calc. Have not tested other apps
yet.

Using Vista SP1 OO
Using 3.00 Build 9358.

In other words, it has to be fixed, right? A lot of people zoom their
spreadsheets, and it looks awful with zoom applied, especially when compared to
the competition, who do it perfectly.

addendum: I have also noticed general screen corruption in Writer, even with the
smooth scrolling turned off. One of the artefacts is an invisible vertical line
down the screen, at some arbitrary point, whereupon the left and right sides of
the screen are slightly staggered, by less than a millimetre usually. I suspect
this is part and parcel of the buggy graphic memory handling in Writer.

I simply cannot believe that one STILL cannot do an easy find/replace on things
like paragraphs marks. In MSWord it's ^p for an end-of-paragraph or for two in a
row: ^p^p.

Have you seen the numerous angry threads on this topic in the open office forum?
This is a deal breaker for many people. It should be given higher status. The
find and replace in Writer is ridiculously difficult and attentuated.

I hate to be picky but I'd like to add that while the corruption has gone, the
"silkiness" of the smooth scrolling has gone too. Now "smooth scrolling" is not
far different to ordinary scrolling, that is, a bit jarring and jumpy. Whatever
they've done to fix the screen refresh problem has also resulted, unfortunately,
in a loss of a sense of sliding, liquid screen.

I suggest this issue should be slated for enhancement down the track.

I would guess that the screen is not being properly refreshed during the little
edgy sliding motions that occur at the end of the PAGEUP or PAGEDOWN actions.
These are the little movements that give the screen the "smooth scrolling"
effect. This is probably a fairly easy thing to fix.

I have two newish computers, both still show the screen corruption with today's
build. The machines I have are Dell and Sony laptops, one with a ATI MOBILITY
RADEON X600 (256 MB) and one with a ATI X300 card.

FYI, ATI has about 30% of the market in graphics cards, and since kpalaqin found
the same issue with the other big kahuna in graphics, nVidia, you cannot, in all
good faith, possibly mark this as a "worksforme" error.

I tried with graphics acceleration at all levels, made no difference.

Incredibly, the topic thread at oooforum.org that covers this issue, and to

Why was it removed from oooforum?

Why has nobody acknowledged this bug, one that I can easily reproduce on

You guys have got to be kidding me! I went to my wife's new Dell notebook,
installed OO 2.1, filled a new Writer document with garbage text (a few pages),
turned on "smooth scrolling", hit the "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys (important)
and instantly saw the bug.

This bug is clearly there on different computers and is easily reproducible.

Please change the status of this to confirmed and assign it for fixing.

I have found the culprit: SMOOTH SCROLLING. When I switched smooth scrolling
off in the Writer options, the screen corruption disappeared.

No, I lowered the hardware acceleration to its lowest setting and the screen
corruption still occurs. I suggest it is within OO's modules for it does not
happen in other software.

Open new document. Fill a few pages with random text. Format the document to
have 2 columns. Page up and down using PageUp and PageDown keys. Lines becomes
corrupt. Refreshing screen solves problem, but it occurs again immediately. See
forum thread http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=24381 (I am using
a 2005 Sony Vaio with ATI X600 card --no other screen redraw problems with other
programs).
