(oops, I originally just hit reply in email as I do at work .. now I'm pasting
it in here.)

Thanks pl -- well it wasn't too hard to figure out.

I experimented with my internet plugs, and determined that the crash is entirely
correlated with "GarminGpsControl.plugin" -- removing it from the Internet
Plug-Ins made the problem go away. (info.plist pasted in below.) Originally I
had version 2.6.1 which crashed, and then I updated to the latest 2.8.1, and
that also crashed.

Perhaps my original bug number should be just for the Garmin case, although you
can see where this basic bug pattern may be kind of common, as I figure the code
quality and updating of internet plugins is below average. The free Garmin plug
is for gps, taking in internet geo data and sending it to a usb connected gps
receiver ... they probably just tested it on that case, not testing the more
general plugin case in some way.

I would consider adding a "Don't Use Media Plugins" preference of some sort, so
that when some random plugin bug or security problem crops up a year from now,
it makes the short-term workaround easy. Or plugins could be enabled/disable
individually (hmm, that could speed up startup too).

Cheers,

Nick

I just ran 300m55 and I still get this crash as before.

My reading of 102735 is that it pertains to the VLC plugin, which I don't think
I have, although there are a bunch of other things in there. I suspect that this
is actually separate bug (although perhaps crashing in a similar way with some
other plugin). Here's my Plug-Ins folder contents (my ~/Library/Internet .. is
empty):

I can bring up writer, but when I type a letter, it goes to the spiny thing for
about 2 seconds and then crashes.

Steps:
-Launch writer
-Cancel out of recovering saved doc
-At writer window, type a letter .. crashes every time

If I go to the recover-doc screen, that also crashes when I type a letter. OOo
300m6 runs fine on this machine. I'm happy to run test followups or whatever, if
this bug is peculiar to my system, although I think of my system is pretty
vanilla OS X 10.4.11.

Thanks again for a great tool!

Nick

I would vote to re-open this. I think the proposed "invalid" resolution would
make sense for a toolbar that exclusively works on one type of content. For
example, if there were an image-editing toolbar, it would make sense for it to
appear and disappear when the selection is on an image.

However, in this case, the toolbar includes controls that work on more general
sorts of text, so I don't think having it disappear for non-bullet text makes
sense. I think this is basically what [EMAIL PROTECTED] is saying too.

I'm just a regular user, so I don't feel comfortable reopening on my own, but
there's my vote.

Launch OOo and close the new document so that no documents are open. Bring up
the Preferences panel and select the Online Update pane. Click the "Check Now"
button. This crashes the application and (correctly) brings up a OOo document
recovery window. Note that if there is, say, a text document window open, there
is no crash, although the update check says "checking for an update failed",
but that's probably just because 3.0b does not have its update infrastructure
set up.

Here is the stack trace from Apple's crash tool which also pops up in the crash
case:

In a text document just type "aaa" and style it as Heading 1. Leave the cursor
on that text and bring up View > Bullets and Numbering toolbar. Click the
Bullets On/Off button once to turn on Bullet mode. Click it a second time to
turn Bullet mode off. The toolbar hides itself. I think the toolbar should not
disappear in this case.

This issue also appears in version 2.3 Mac X11.

In a text document just type "aaa" and style it as Heading 2. Leave the cursor
on that text and bring up View > Bullets and Numbering toolbar.

The 4 promote/demote buttons are disabled, which I think is not correct. Note
that if you bring up the Navigator on the same text, it has promote/demote
enabled.

If you enable bullets on the text (say using the button on the toolbar), then
the promote/demote buttons are enabled, however as the Navigator shows, bullet
mode is not a precondition for promote/demote. Aside: I definitely do not
understand the difference in behavior of a paragraph that is in "bullet" mode or
not.

This bug also appears in version 2.4 X11 on the mac.. I suspect it's a minor
thing that's been around for a while.

I've built these doc styles up through several versions of Word, so I can
believe that the styles or my template document have picked up some internal
logical flaw at some point. Not giving this a high priority seems reasonable --
the conditions which lead to this document are probably rare.

The attached HeadingOOOBug.doc file uses styles, and in particular the outlining
Heading 1, Heading 2, ... styles. I've used these styles for years across
multiple versions of Word.

Reading the .doc in, Heading 3, which should have an indent of 0.38 inch, comes
in defined with an indent of -0.38 inch. I'm running OOo 2.0 on Mac OS through
X11.
