I am waiting for the expand/collapse feature too. In fact this is the only
reason I am forced to use the go-oo branch right now. Their implementation of
expand/collapse works fine for me.
Regarding the discussion on all headings collapsed/expanded when navigator is
opened: imho this feature is needed to work with large documents. When a large
number of headings is expanded, you spend your time scrolling through the
expanded headings finding what you are looking for. The feature is needed to
enable the user to go directly to the heading he needs by opening subheadings in
the tree hierarchy. To do this the headings should be collapsed as the default
view, same as in every outliner.

I heard that bugs are sometimes closed when they occur with the special builds
for linux distributions. This is why I want to add that I checked with OO under
Windows Vista as well and had the same results:
OO Writer 2.4.3 fine
OO Writer 3.1.1 freezes when open a larger file that was saved with web layout

I ran into the same problem. I had a larger file (180kB) saved with web layout
and writer would freeze when I tried to open it.
Maybe this helps to narrow down when the error got into the code: I was using
the OO-package that comes with ubuntu and I am pretty shure the OO version was
3.0.x when I started working with it, no problems then, and the version was
still 3.1 when the problem occured.
