I'm not sure exactly where this belongs, but I first experienced the problem in
OOo writer.

I have a Dell laptop and the volume controls do not work (i.e. for music being
played in another program) when OOo has focus.

I don't believe this has been reported yet here, but others have reported the
problem on the forums, see http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=81215

This is very disruptive when I need to mute my sound to take a phone call while
editing a document.

I've got OOo 3.2.1 installed on a virtual installation of Windows XP which uses
VMware Fusion Version 3.1.0 (261058) on OS X 10.5.8.

VMware throws an icon for each Windows application onto the OS X dock, but for
OOo 3.2.1 it uses Windows' "unrecognized file" icon (the white page with a
diagram of a classic Windows window on it).

OOo 2.4 correctly had the OOo logo appear, which leads me to suspect this is an
OOo issue rather than a VMware one. (Not that I'm fond of the new icons, but
they're better than no icon)

I just installed 3.2.1 and it is still opening in the Writer/Web component, not
in the Calc component.

I thought this was fixed? Or is there a setting I am missing?

Disclaimers:
- This may be a duplicate of Issue 104853 (could be different symptoms of the
same problem), but printing didn't seem slow for me.
- Since the last time printing such a document, I've changed many settings.

Summary of problem:
When trying to print a 36-page selection of a spreadsheet, the printing stopped
after a few pages with no complaints on the printer.

Details:
I have a spreadsheet with 1517 rows and "K" columns, sized to fit in a landscape
Letter-size page with 1cm margins and a header with Arial size 9 text. I have
horizontal borders only showing. The last column has some bleeds, which makes
what should be a 36 page document a 72 page document.

I tried printing pages 1-36, and the first time it stopped at page 8. The second
time (trying to print pages 9 to 36) it stopped at page 29. The printer (a Xerox
Phaser 8400N) didn't report any errors, but the Windows XP printer dialog
reported an unspecified "error" when I went in to look at recent jobs. There
were some unsaved changes when I printed.

The last time I needed to print such a spreadsheet, I was using OOo2.4 on
Windows XP SP2, which was running on an iMac G5 running OS X 10.5.? with
Parallels 3 or 4. That time, it worked fine.

Now I'm running OOo3.1.1 on Windows XP SP3, running on the same mac with OS X
10.5.8 and VMWare Fusion, which I recently updated to version 3.1. So the
problem could be any of those things, or the printer driver or the printer
itself. Time Machine might also have been in a middle of a backup, which could
also have screwed with things.

I only print these spreadsheets on OOo every couple of months, and I realize
this is a somewhat uncommon configuration with zillions of variables, so really
this is a bit of a needle in a haystack. I don't expect anyone to go printing
hundreds of pages to troubleshoot this, I'm just putting this out here in the
case that someone else with overlapping symptoms might find it and could help
narrow down the problem.

I'm still getting this problem on 3.0.1.

I'm running OOo on XP2 on Parallels on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5.6.

For reference, the lockfile contains the following information (where "foobar"
is the username on the mac):

,FOOBAR/Administrator,foobar,09.03.2009
12:44,file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Administrator/Application%20Data/OpenOffice.org/3;

Details: The User Data section in OOo is completely blank. I am opening the file
using the "open a file" link in the OOo splash. The file is located withtin my
public folder on the mac. After closing OOo (including the QuickStarter), the
lockfile is not deleted (not that it should be there in the first place...)

I'm wondering if this is related to why I can't double-click on a networked file
on the mac for it to open in OOo while browsing it in Windows.

Or possibly it thinks that it's being opened in the Mac environment.

All I know is it's costing me a lot of productivity at work. My workaround will
be reinstalling 2.4.

I can confirm this, and will upload a sample file.

There are two problems here:
Definition: The "html based xls file" is a file with extension .xls, and which,
when viewed in plaintext, contains a table created with html tags in the format
Cell1Cell2Cell3

Problem 0: When clicking this file on the desktop or in a folder, it opens
properly in the Calc component. This is not a problem.

Problem 1: When opening this file using File > Open (or the "open a file" button
in the welcome screen), it opens in the HTML editor component.

Problem 2: When attempting to open a very large file of this format (I'm not
sure if the limit is amount of total data or number of rows, but my file has
over 3200 rows), it has the following response:

Problem 2a: When opening it using File > Open, it opens in the HTML editor
component, and only the first 3200 rows are rendered. The rest are concatenated
into a long paragraph.

Problem 2b: When clicking on the file from the desktop, the OOo title screen
opens, and the process grows to over 100MB (taking 99% of the processor,
according to Windows Task Manager), and the file does not open in five minutes
(I gave up after that).

Such a file opens fine in Excel for XP (which was my workaround until the other
computer with that program was discarded), but the file doesn't open properly in
Excel:mac 2004 or 2008, as accented characters are not decoded properly. (é
comes out as È, etc.)

Unfortunately, the vendor whose software creates these files treats this problem
as "worksforme [in Excel for XP]", and I am not in a position to get them to
create a properly working file.

In addition, double-clicking the files to open them is a very time-consuming
workaround for me. I keep my files on the OSX part of my computer, and access
them in OOo/XP via networked folders. I also don't have space on my XP virtual
hard drive to save them. And for some reason, I can't open files on folders
networked via Parallels (see issue #85650).

While 3200 rows may be a reasonable limit for an HTML editor, it is not for a
spreadsheet program. Therefore any workarounds involving opening the file in
OOo's HTML editor component is not a true solution. OOo should obey the file's
.xls extension when opening such files, and when opening them in the spreadsheet
module, they should be able to accept files with over 3200 lines.

(This is similar to Issue 88908, but different in that it still happens when
autocorrect is off, and that it doesn't relate to an outside list, but relates
to other user-generated content in same column within the spreadsheet in
question. Either way the workaround is not intuitive.)

I am trying to create a spreadsheet with a cross-reference list for attendance
at meetings. In other words, the meetings run across the column heads, and the
attendees go down the rows. When a person attends a meeting, an "x" goes in the
appropriate row/column combination.

I am trying to use both lowercase and uppercase "x", meaning different things.
However, if I already have a lowercase "x" in the column, it will replace any
uppercase "X" I try to enter below it with a lowercase "x". Typing an apostrophe
works, but THIS IS NOT INTUITIVE TO THE AVERAGE USER. Or to myself, whom I
consider slightly above-average--I only learned of this "solution" while
searching for issues before filing one of my own.

This occurs in v. 2.4.1 on XP SP2. The cell format appears to be the default
(number->general).

This will happen for any text. Type "Gregarious", then try to type "GREGARIOUS"
below it, and it automatically gets converted to the case of the earlier
version.

(A quick but broad search did not appear to return any similar issues. Apologies
if it is a dupe.)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a Writer document
2. Go to "Format > Page"
3. Click on the "Columns" tab of the formatting dialog
4. Close the dialog.
(Optional 4b: close OOo, close the quickstarter, restart the OS, do the
hokey-pokey)
5. Re-open OOo to a Writer document
6. Go to "Format > Page"

Expected behaviour:
The formatting dialog should open up to the "Page" tab

Actual behaviour:
The formatting dialog opens up to the "Columns" tab.

While this could be considered useful for users who frequently want to revisit
the columns tab, there is a "Format > Columns" link already, so having the
"Format > Page" item go to the most recently used tab in the formatting dialog
is redundant.

Cheers.

I'm having some difficulties opening files in my current configuration.

I suspect this bug is new, as no other bug had "Parallels" in the title. I'm not
sure if I've entered the correct fields for this bug report; I'm not sure which
component is involved with opening files.

I'm also not sure if this problem relates to OOo, to Parallels, both, or neither
(I could find no similar bug here or on forums.parallels.com). I'm reporting it
here first, as I suspect the problem is with an OOo component. If it is not an
OOo problem, I hope this report is sufficiently detailed that I can post an
inquiry on the Parallels support forums with a link to this bug report.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:
I am running OSX 10.4.11 on a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo mac. I have Parallels
3.0 (Buld 5582), running Windows XP SP2.

I have OOo 2.3.1 installed on the virtualized XP.

I have my OSX User/Public folder set as one of my Parallels Shared Folders, so
that files in that folder are accessible from within XP (as "[Username] Public
on .psf").

I do not have MSO installed on XP; however, I do have MSO 2004 installed on OSX.
Within XP, MSO files are set to open with OOo by default (though "Microsoft
Excel (Mac)" is an option in the "Open With" context menu option)

To maximize reproducibility, the spreadsheet documents mentioned below were
created as follows:
- Open OOCalc
- Type "test" into cell A1
- Save as "psf doc test.xls" and again as "psf doc test.ods" onto XP desktop
- Copy/paste into "[Username] Public on .psf" folder

DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM:
Within XP, I navigate in Windows Explorer to the folder "[username] Public on
.psf", usually by clicking on my "Parallels Shared Folders" icon on the desktop,
then clicking on the "[username] Public" network folder icon.

When I double-click on a file icon in that folder (or right-click and ask it to
open with OOo), I get a variety of inconsistent, strange behaviours.
(Double-clicking on files that are on the XP desktop or elsewhere within the XP
filesystem works fine) Unfortunately, I don't think I can compile an exhaustive
list of trials, but here is a selection:

- Note: the QuickStarter is not yet open (and soffice.bin/exe processes are not
running in the Task Manager)
- Clicking on an .odg file starts the quickstarter and opens a new OODraw
document. In a second attempt, it started the soffice.bin and .exe processes but
the Quickstarter did not appear, nor did the new document window (ERROR: should
open the .odg file)
- Clicking again on the same file (whether the previous window was left open or
was closed) does nothing. Once or twice it initiated a second soffice.(bin?)
instance, which immediately terminated, but a second Quickstarter icon would
appear, and one of the two would disappear as I hovered over it.
- With the quickstarter running (i.e. by opening OOo from the Start menu), I can
right-click the quickstarter, click "Open Document", navigate to this .odg file
in the "[username] Public on .psf" folder, and it will open the file correctly

- Clicking on a .xls file or a .ods file yields similar results. The
Quickstarter didn't open, but that could be for the same reason that it only
opened the first time I tried the .odg file (as I haven't restarted XP since
trying that one)
- Opening the .xls file and .ods file from the QuickStarter appears to work
alright.
- One of the .xls files I was trying earlier actually opened in Writer/Web when
I tried opening it in the quickstarter, however that was a .xls file created by
a custom app from one of my company's suppliers, and that file was opening
strangely in MSO 2004/OSX as well (though it seemed to open alright in OOo when
I open it from the desktop...).
- This last one is the main reason I wanted to make the bug report, but I
suspect now that the opening-with-writer/web problem is a problem with our
vendor trying to create a .xls file, more than a problem with OOo. Nevertheless,
there is still a problem with opening the real OOo files.

Hm. I hadn't thought of this workaround (I'm used to alt+letter keys being
keyboard shortcuts).

I would agree that it is a duplicate, or at least a variant, of 62642.

To reproduce this problem:
- type two words in a slide
- put the cursor in the middle of one of the words ("word 1")
- right click on the *other* word ("word 2"), then apply some sort of formatting
through the context menu (i.e. change style, size, etc.)
- the formatting is applied to word 1, not to word 2. In Writer, the formatting
applies to word 2 (as expected)

I have tried this on two different computers, bother running Windows XP Home.

(Note: there is an example of a similar action which _does_ work, below, to
provide comparison with how and why this doesn't work)

How to create the problem:
A.1. In presentation (also works in Writer), create three bullets with some text
(this is the same if you use one or three, but three gives better context)
A.2. Select the text in the middle bullet, or simply put the cursor in the
middle bullet
A.3. Open the bullets and numbering dialog (format > bullets and numbering)
A.4. In the "position" tab, select the text box for the "spacing to text" entry
(you may want to select level 1 bullets on the left, in which case this problem
also occurs with the "indent" box)
A.5. Type a number, like 5
A.6. Press enter
The formatting does not change. It appears that the same problem occurs in
Writer, as well.

Example of similar case that does work:
B.1. In presentation (also works in Writer), create three bullets with some text
(this is the same if you use one or three, but three gives better context)
B.2. Select the text in the middle bullet, or simply put the cursor in the
middle bullet
B.3. Open the paragraph formatting dialog (format > paragraph)
B.4. In the "indents and spacing" tab, select the current value for (for
example) Spacing above paragraph.
B.5. Type a number, like 5
B.6. Press enter
The new value is recorded as 5 (units - in my case, centimetres)

This problem only occurs intermittently, and I have no clue why the expected
behaviour works sometimes and not others; I can't find a distinct pattern,
although I haven't looked at it exhaustively.

To recreate this problem:

1. Open or create a presentation with at least five slides (enough so that they
don't all show up on the slidebar - try 12).
2. Click on one slide, then scroll down/up (this behaviour tends to happen more
frequenly when scrolling with the scroll bar), press and hold the shift key,
then click another. Sometimes it will select the entire range of slides, but
sometimes it will only select the most recently-selected slide.
3. Click on another slide, and keep selecting multiple slides in this way; it
doesn't necessarily have to be when you scroll.

Again, I'm not quite sure what the difference is when it (the preferred
behaviour) does and doesn't work. Sometimes the slides quickly all highlight,
but immediately deselect, except for the current one.

[graphics-issues] [Issue 71318] Spellcheck removes manual line breaks (shift enters) in Impress

To recreate this problem:
- Open Impress
- Find or make a text box with a bulleted list
- on any line (first, middle last), write a word that is misspelled, then
shift-enter to create a manual line break.
- (optional): add another bullet/line after the misspelled one.
- run spell check and use spell check to change or correct the spelling (either
through the supplied word list or in the word editor)

Expected behaviour: the word changes

Unexpected behaviour: the manual line breaks (for that line only) disappear

I know manual formatting isn't supposed to be done this way, but for my purposes
it's easiest, and I expect many non-expert users would be bothered by this
formatting change, too.

I tested this on two different computers (albeit both Windows XP Home 32).

Although it works in writer, in presentation when you press "alt", the "file"
menu does turn blue, but when you press F (or E, or V...) for the File (or
other) menu to expand.

The closest you can get is press alt, down, esc, esc, down, then navigate the
menus via the arrow keys.

I first noticed this in 2.0.3, when it tended to screw up a lot when I used the
mouse, so I avoided using it as much as possible. Luckily 2.0.4 is more stable,
but I still like to press alt, f, a instead of clicking file > save as.

I was able to reproduce this problem on another computer (albeit both were
running Windows XP home 32); I haven't checked it in anything other than
presentation (in which the problem occurs) and writer (in which the problem is
absent).

(I'm not sure if this is more formatting or editing)

Here is what I found:

- Type a bullet line with 1st at the end (no space or punctuation)
- Press "Enter". The "st" will automatically be made into superscript (assuming,
of course, this function is activated)
- The text in the new line is also superscript (which it shouldn't be)

Currently, the only Autocorrect functions I have activated are Use Replacement
Tabl, Replace 1st, Replace 1/2, and Replace dashes.

When the cursor (that is, the mouse arrow) is in a text box that has some text
in it, and I use the keyboard (ctrl+enter) to navigate to that textbox, the
cursor acts as though the left mouse button is clicked.

To recreate:
1. Enter a few lines/bullets of text in a slide
2. Move the (mouse) cursor in the middle of some of the text you just selected
3. If the textbox is still in edit mode, press the "escape" key.
(4. If the mouse's "select" function is selected in the drawing toolbar, you may
have to repeat steps 5 and 6 so that the cursor is set to "text")
5. Type ctrl+enter until the appropriate text box is selected
6. Use the arrow keys to navigate up, down, left, right, etc. You'll notice that
the text is selected from the point where the cursor is hovering, and that you
can't get more than one arrow-move away from the cursor.

Workarounds:
- Click on the text in the textbox after navigating there using the keyboard
(thereby rendering keyboard navigation redundant)
- Ensure that at all times the mouse is never left hovering over any text.

I'm still new at submitting bugs, so I apologize for any mistakes I've made with
selecting variuos options. I'm using Windows XP SP2. I also noticed this
behaviour with OOo 2.0.3. I tried looking for similar bug reports.

I want to be able to make customized numbering in Impress that looks like this
(all at level 1):

* Text
* Text
1. Text
2. Text

However, I cannot. The closest I can do is:

* Text
* Text
3. Text
4. Text

I've noticed that in Writer, customized numbering can start at 0, but in
Impress, the lowest it will go is 1.

As a workaround, I could configure the second-level bullets to look exactly like
the top level bullets, but that is very cumbersome, is not transparent, and not
intuitive.

I'm new at reporting bugs on OOo, so I may have mis-filed it (

A search for "numbering impress" returned only two results, neither of which
applied. I'm using Windows XP SP2.

When I have three bullet/lines in a box, size 40 font, I select all of them, and
press ctrl+2 to make them double-spaced.

I want to add more space, so I go to the end of lines 1 and 2 and type
ctrl+enter to add a line break for each one.

Line 2 adds a double-spaced line between lines 2 and 3, as expected. However,
line 1 adds a single-spaced line between lines 1 and 2. If I press ctrl+enter
again, the first line becomes double-spaced, followed by a single-spaced line,
followed by a double-space to the second bullet.

This is my first time filing a bug for OOo (I have bitched regularly about
irregularities on Impress on the forums, at least 2.0.4 lets me work around the
bugs without restarting the program). I'm using Windows XP SP2, OOo 2.0.4.
