I can confirm that the reported problem has been resolved in Release candidate
OOo_2.3.0rc2_20070905_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe.

Tested with the file that was the cause of the original complaint and some more
recent examples of the same file. All load quickly and completely, and without
introduction of artefacts, and all can be saved again and reloaded apparently
identical. A file comparison utility showed no differences between the original
and saved files.

Also renamed the original .gen file to .new and to .mis. Both loaded speedily,
uneventfully and accurately.

I did notice that a fresh 7 MByte file '.mis' (completely unrelated to the other
files above) took far longer (ca 2 mins) to load than the identical file with
the '.txt' extender (ca 10 secs.). The '.txt' file had been saved from the
'.mis' file after opening in Open Office Writer. However, both files were
identical when compared with a file comparison utility. The huge load-time
difference is a little un-nerving. Have you fixed just the load problem for text
files with the extender '.gen', or more generally for text files with any
unrecognised extender, such as '.mis'?

New further information, of great relevance:

I supplied originally a text file named (after unzipping) 'dictline.gen'.
If this file is renamed to 'dictline.txt', the problem that I reported
disappears. The problem, then, lies with OO Writer's use of the '.gen'
extension.

I have also a new file, which has long borne the '.txt' extender, that loads
properly into OO Writer. If the '.txt' is changed to '.gen', this new file
suffers the same problem (inserted lines) as the original problem file.

I have also an older file, very similar, and also with the '.gen' name
extension. This does NOT cause the problem of inserted lines.

I have examined all three files with a short self-penned C-program. No file
contains any characters that are unique to itself; that is, all characters can
be found in the others. In particular, no file contains any accidental
control-codes or other characters that one would not expect to find in a simple
text file.

I hope that this eliminates many diagnostic possibilities.
Using Open Office Writer 2.0.2.

[Using OO2 Writer RC2.]

It takes a long time to load the attached text file (provided as
'dictionary.zip'; unzipped file has extender '.gen', but it is all text). The
file is 5 MBytes long, and consists entirely of single-line paragraphs.
When file is finally displayed on screen, a carriage return (hard paragraph
ending) has been inserted between each original paragraph.
Confirmed on two unrelated computers (laptop, desktop, different manufacturers),
both with Windows XP. Both have 512 MBytes RAM.
When attached file is sliced into four roughly-equal parts, not one of the parts
shows the same behaviour - all parts load normally and quickly, without
paragraph insertions.

[Using OO2 Writer RC2.]
1. Create any text document in Writer.
2. Insert a GIF picture (from file...) anywhere in the text.
3. Right-click on the picture, and select picture.../macros.
4. Dialog warning appears OpenOffice.org requires a Java runtime environment
(JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE and restart OpenOffice.org.
5. Click on OK. Dialog disappears, and instantly reappears (go to step 4).
6. (There is not a crash, just a continuous loop.)
7. Need to ALT-CTRL-DELETE to exit from Open Office 2.

[Similar problem previously reported by another user with Python. This was
fixed. Could there be any other occurrences?]

[Using OO2 RC2 Writer]

A lot of text found on the Internet contains sentences part-terminated by
carriage-return CR (as distinct from \n). I personally have to deal with
texts like this a lot. Example:

The cat sat onCR
the mat and ateCR
the rat. CR
CR
The cat later neededCR
a rabies shot.CR

What one would like to do is:
1. retain the CR between paragraphs.
2. replace all the other CR with spaces, to give:

The cat sat on the mat and ate the rat.CR
CR
The cat later needed a rabies shot.CR

This is easy in Microsoft Word - just search/replace CRCR with DUMMY,
search/replace CR with space and search/replace DUMMY with CR.
If there is a work-around with Open Office Writer, then I have been completely
unable to fathom it. No amount of juggling with ^, $ and '.' appears to work
(regular expressions turned on). Microsoft Word allows actual detection of CR
with the command ^p. There seems to be no direct equivalent in OO Writer.
