I am the original poster.  Don't hold your breath.  Open Office only fixes bugs
that interest them or block some new feature bloat they want to add.  Check out
when I opened this bug:  "Opened: Wed Oct 8 11:23:00 + 2003"  This bug is
over SEVEN years old and they still do not care.  Very frustrating.  And very
bizarre for an open source project: OO is the only open source I know of that
acts this way.  Maybe they all used to work for Microsoft.

Not to hurt anyone's feeling, but this bug and other ignored bugs are the reason
the general public is rejecting Open Office.  It is my impression that you only
fix bugs when they block some new feature bloat you want to add.

That said, I had to remove yet another OO from a customer's computer and replace
it with office.  May I share the customer's remarks with you:

Can I have Word?  I don't like Open Office (i.e. -- can't
print out envelopes that easily without a lot of cut and
pasting and formatting is all screwed up.)

Please fix some bugs?  Please fix this. 2003 is long enough.  You guys should be
completely embarrassed by this!

Background: the only really useful way to export documents from
Open Office (OO) to other formats is through Word (97/2000/2003).
OO is sadly missing exporters such as Word Pro and Word Perfect.

Okay we can work with this, which is probably why we have
so few usable exporters.

Problem:  when we export tables to Word and they are on top of
each other, Word changes the tables to merged tables.  This is a
“quirk” of Word.  This also does not match the expected behavior
of the original document, which is that they are separate tables.

Why would we want 12 pitch black Time New Roman to
be converted to 10 pitch blue Tahoma because it is a “Quirk”?

Why then when would you want two separate tables to be
merged?  The converted output document should match as
closely as possible to the original documents behavior.
If you send the converter a merged table from OO, then convert it
to a merged table; if you send it two separate tables, then  
convert it to two separate tables.  (This required the programmer
to insert a line between the two tables, then convert the line's
attribute to “hidden” before doing the export.)

This would solve a lot of difficulties for those of us that have
to use the Word converter to get to other formats.

 OOo_2.4.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz

it was obtained from:

running under CentOS 4.1.  I am also able to reproduce this under
Cent OS 5.1 on another machine.

Hi All,

  When you have two tables with a line between them, you currently have
to position the cursor on the blank line and press delete.  Pressing
the backspace key does not work.  This is not intuitive as it does 
not match the behavior of the rest of the of the work processor.  
In a regular text edit, pressing the backspace key would have removed the
line.

Please fix this in 3.0

When you export two tables, one on top of the other, to word 97-2003 format, 
two tables get merged as one.  I have attached examples.

TableMerge1.odt is the original.  Note that the two tables have different
number of columns

TableMerge2.doc is the exported to word document.  You can use Word Viewer,
Mord Pro, or OO to verify the two tables got merged together

TableMerge3.odt is what the merged table mess looks like in 00

and contents, this is the way it should work:

1) To copy only the table contents: start the selection inside the first
cell and drag the mouse over the rest of the table

2) To copy the table along with its contents: highlight the table from the
outside left to the outside right

Because it is not "Intuitive".  The goal is to make OO Write the "Easiest to use
word processor in the history of computing".  Placing a "Toolbar", which the
help menu does refer to the Navigator as, in "Obscure" pull down in "not
intuitive". 

Why not place it in the "File" pull down; why not place it in "help".
It is a "Toolbar".  Everyone expects "Toolbars" to be found somewhere in the
"View" menu.

Those already using this toolbar probably are activating it with the obscure
icon on the lower right verticle scrollbar.  This, by the way, is where the help
menu tells you to find it, not in any of the pull down menus.  

And, obscure icons are okay, ONLY as long as they are duplicated in an
"Intuitive" pull down menu.

Here is a compromise: make the change in OO 3 Beta.  Everyone expects
things to change in a Beta.  No one will be bothered by making it make
intuitive sense to the user.

It is the "little touches" that will make OO Write more user friendly.

I have been trying to spread OO over my customer base in two counties.
The results are not positive.  They do not like all the endless bugs
and all the weird, non-intuitive ways of doing things, like one toolbar
in the edit menu and the rest in view.  Like, entering return in the
upper left cell to enter a new line between two tables.  Like, "I just
want to print a single envelope!".

So please, spend a little time on making OO Write easier and more intuitive
to use and less time on new features.  Make OO Writer intuitive and easy to
use and customers will beat your doors down.  There is a real need 
out there for a quality word processor at a reasonable price. Right now
OO Writer is not it.  But, it holds the potential to become it.  Let's
start making it so with the "little touches".

Hi All,

I have a customer base over two counties.  I have been trying to get them
interested in OO, but with only limited success.  The problem usually
comes down to the customers just don't like OO.  Too many bugs; too hard
to use.  (And, yes, some are incapable of learning anything new, so you
are off the hook on that one.)

My experience with my users is that they never report bugs to projects
like this.  My experience with Firefox is much different, but a lot
of their users have a different culture than OO.  They do report bugs.

Would you consider adding an icon to the top of the window bar called
"Report a bug".  This the standard office worker/clerk typist would 
use.  It would also help increase the quality of OO, which in my
experience with my users, is the main stumbling block to its acceptance.

When you add a number in a (table) cell that causes a number to calculate, 
the cell with the calculation in it will chagne from top format to bottom 
format.  To reproduce this (bug #3 in the attachment), 

1) open my attached odt.

2) go to the top of the first table's second column (column B) and add a bunch
of stuff such that the cell scrolls several lines.

3) verify that the far right cell (column E) stayed at the top.

4) now, add a number to the third cell (column C). When finished, click off into
column B.

5) verify that the number you added to column C was calculated in column E.

6) check column E's cell alignment. It will have dropped to bottom alignment.

When trying to copy a table into the clipboard, you can not highlight the table
from the outside left to the outside right to do a copy.  You have to start
above the table.  

This put extra stuff (a blank line) into the copy that has to be removed after
the paste.

Please consider implementing "Divider Tabs" (not "division tabs") in the style
of Lotus Word Pro

This abandoned request was originally make on October 4, 2003.

With a Divider Tab, it is one mouse click to go exactly where you want. With the
"Navigator" it is how many mouse clicks?

The purpose of including Divider Tabs is to increase productivity. It wouldn't
hurt to have both in OO Writer. Word Pro has both and they
co-exist. And since I use Word Pro a lot, I can tell you that Divider Tabs are
SO, SO much quicker and easier to use than is the Navigator
that I never use the Navigator.

If you place two tables (of different sizes) on top of each other, you can not
insert a blank line between the two tables, except by a bizarre workaround.

You should be able to click outside the left side of the table, the cursor 
should
blink on the outside of the table, then press enter to add a blank line above 
the table.

And, the work around should be removed.  The work around is to add place the 
cursor a the upper left in the upper left cell and press enter.  This will add
a blank line above the table.  This is NOT INTUTIVE.  It also violates what
is generally expected by the user, which is THAT EVERY CELL ACTS THE SAME.
Enter a return in any cell should simple add an additional line in the cell.

Dudes!  This IS NOT A DUPLICATE of 12686.   

12686 is speaking of separate documents in each tab, as in the style of
Firefox.

What is being asked for here is "Divider tabs".  The dividers are in
the SAME document, not separate documents.  It is a way of quickly
going to chapters, etc. in your document.

>From Word Pro's help file:
Divider tabs represent divisions and sections in a document. 
They can be used to structure a document and reveal its 
organization at a glance. Word Pro does not display divider
tabs by default; you can display them by clicking the icon 
on your workspace.

"Divider tabs" are an EXTREMELY powerful productivity tool.  They
are the main reason I have delayed switching from Word Pro to
Open Office Writer.

Please consider putting this request on a fast track.

This is for 2.3.1 (not 2.3).  2.3.1 is not on the list
of versions yet.

Yum will not install jre as it is unsigned.
