I furthermore experience problems with mixing bulleted lists and numbered lists. When i reopen my master document and say yes to update links, sometimes lists that are numbered in the subdocument are bulleted in the master document and vice versa. I use default numbering and bulleting by just clicking on the toolbar buttons. That said i would like the option to handle headers and list numbering separately. When inserting a subdocument you could then specify to restart numbering in its list(s) (my preferable default) or continue numbering from previous subdocument. That way full control is available for the creator/maintainer of the master doument and the creators/maintainers of subdocuments don't have to take into account whether or not the document is to be used in a master document and how the numbering should be handled in the master document. just my 2cts.
