There doesn't seem to be any activity to solve this issue:( I would also like to
drag and drop the reference from Navigator.

I actually found out several weeks ago, that there is one large picture (I don't
remember now) inside the table cell, that causes the problem (that is by
removing it the problem is solved). I do not remember which picture exactly
causes the problem. If you scroll down the scrollbar just after opening the
document, you will see that two or more pictures are one above other.

It is interesting that now I am at work and OpenOffice.org 2.0 works with the
given document well, it does not crash.

The problem remains in 2.0.162.
However, I managed to find a workaround. When I press and hold PageDown several
seconds after the document has been opened but before the program has frozen,
the program does not freeze.

I have WindowsXP SP2 and OpenOffice.org 2.0.2. When I open the .odt document,
the OOO freezes 3 seconds after the document has been opened. The document
contains about 60 pages of text, images, tables and formulas. There are about 20
images, 30 formulas, 30 tables, some of them are nested inside one another.
There are about 25 cross-references set and maybe 15 of them are used. There is
table of contents, table of images and table of tables. When the document is
opened, the cursor blinks for three times and then stops blinking and the
program stops responding. It starts using all the available processor time and I
kill the process. I tried opening the same document in Kubuntu 5.10 with
OpenOffice.org 2.0.? and there was no such problem.
It is interesting that the problem appeared after making some small changes to
the document, there was no problem in opening the document before.
When I was writing the document, the program crashed from time to time and I was
forced to change the AutoSave interval to 5 minutes. The crashes occured when I
was writing the document in this computer and in other computer (which also had
WindowsXP SP2 and Ooo2.0.2), so it's probably not the computer problem.
I am new to Ooo, I guess the program goes into infinite loop while trying to
update the references. The document is really important, maybe there is some
workaround?
I changed the content of the file in Linux by adding the space and tried opening
the same file in Windows, but the problem remained.
