I selected another approach (with m84).
There's is an existing table with type DATE (Oracle 10g).
Created a form with a date field and a time field.
Date field shows the correct value. Time field shows 00:00.
Modified the time and changed the record. The date field shows 01.01.1800.
Pressed the SAVE button: throws an java.lang.IllegalArgumentException.

I can not reproduce it in DEV300_m84. I did the following

- create a table with a date column
- inserted some values
- create a form with a time field
- updated the value (only the time value)
= the value was correctly updated

Though Oracle stores date values always with hh:mm:ss, a time field cannot read
and write this information. So you have to use always a TimeStamp field in the
database.
