askwar,
this is what Help says

If the Always create backup copy option is selected, the old version of the
file is saved to the backup directory whenever you save the current version of
the file.
You can change the backup directory by choosing Tools - Options - OOo-dev -
Paths, then change the Backups path in the dialog.
The backup copy has the same name as the document, but the extension is .BAK.
If the backup folder already contains such a file, it will be overwritten
without warning.

Ah, okay. In /home/alexander/.ooo-2.0/user/backup/, I find the backup copy.

Any chance to make OOo behave more like other applications on *nix and have it
create the backup copy in the directory of the working file and maybe even name
it with a trailing ~? However, saving the backup copy in the directory of the
real file would be a good start, though.

So your original problem is resolved?

As far as saving in the same folder I suggest filing an RFE for that.

Yes, it is. Changing to WFM.

askwar,
do you see the problem with latest released version (which is 2.2 at the
moment)?

I'm now using openoffice-bin 2.2.0 in German on Gentoo Linux. I now don't get an
error message anymore - which might be due to the fact, that Always create
backup
copy seems to be a noop... :|

Or maybe I just don't look right. Anyway, what I did: I enabled Tools - Options
- Load/Save - General, I enabled Always create backup copy. I then opened an
existing file. I modified it a bit. I selected File - Save.

Result: The old file is overwritten.

Expected result: The old file is overwritten and there should be a new file
filename.odt~ (or whatever, ~ would be he backup extension of choice on *nix)
in the same directory.

Are you using a Network volume by any chance?

It could be that you have a file locking issue that is persistent with a
variety of network volumes and
platforms. I sometimes get the same error message with AFP on Mac OS X. Cannot
check the latest version
at this time.

No, I'm not using a network volume; or rather, it also happens with a local
filesystem, which happens to be a reiserfs v3 in this case. But this also
happens with a NFS mount.
