So it's pretty clear what's going on... Moving the windows one out of the way temporarily (setting the open office path first in %PATH% didn't seem to work, it's been a long time since I messed with windows stuff) makes it all work nicely. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1 and all latest MS updates installed on a Core 2 Quad with 8GB RAM. I have the latest JRE installed.
