Problem was due to an undetected inclusion of remote images, not related to the
proxy nor the hyperlinks.

One small addition:

I had the same issue yesterday, WITHOUT having entered a proxy. One of the sites
I link to in my Calc sheet was unreachable, although the domain name resolved ->
long TCP/IP timeout.

So it isn't only limited to proxies, I guess. However, I was unable to reproduce
that today, even with my file.

Thanks! Will send you shortly.

I removed lots of data from the Calc sheet I will send you. In fact, I only left
the links in it, but the error still occurs. Unfortunately I was not able to
reproduce the problem with a new file with some links that looked similar, so
maybe it has something to do with the specific file.

I narrowed it down even more: it has to do with my proxy. Sorry if gets a little
bit technical right now. ;-)

I have one host, myproxy.lan. That hostname resolves through a local DNS.

Case 1:
If myproxy.lan blocks all incoming packets on the mentioned proxy port, Calc
loads for minutes -> looks like a TCP/IP timeout while trying to reach the
proxy.

Case 2:
If myproxy.lan does not block incoming packets, but simply have no proxy
listening on this port, Calc is a little bit slower when loading (10-15s delay),
but doesn't wait for minutes -> looks as well like a TCP/IP timeout. This time
it's shorter, because packets get rejected immediately and don't silently drop.

Case 3:
If I enter a wrong host, like notexists.lan, the file loads without problems.

My conclusion:
Calc tries to connect to the proxy immediately if the hostname is resolvable.
The amount of "freeze time" then depends on how fast TCP/IP packets time out or
get rejected, which depends on firewall settings.

If you can't reproduce it, try the following:
Enter pumbaa.ooodev.org as a proxy (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) on port 3128. The packets
to this port get rejected by pumbaa.ooodev.org, so you have the long timeout.
You just have to assure that your corporate firewall lets packets through. ;-)

I agree that this is a little bit complicated and goes down to network
technology, so if you need help, let me know. ;-)

What I don't see is the reason WHY Calc loads these links. These are simple
links inserted in a table, nothing else.

I also thought it might has to do something with an extension or the update
service, but the problem only occurs in Calc with that file; upon opening
Writer, no issues, and upon opening another document in Calc, no issues as well,
so I think it is document-related.

I can reproduce it by entering an invalid proxy: the host name is valid and
reachable, but there's no proxy service on port xyz -> timeout.

Calc blocks waiting for a linked document to be loaded because that call is
executed synchronously. In Writer we have solved a comparable problem for linked
images. Doing the same for documents is much more effort, but doable. Calc must
be changed to resolve links asynchronously. Of course the same would apply to
Writer.

I think we should review this task again when we plan for the performance
improvements we want to achieve on the 3.x code line. IMHO this will require
more asynchronous processing anyway (based on threads, not on user events).

I tried to reproduce the issue, but was unable by simply adding links to a new
Calc sheet. It does, however, occur with a specific file and I'm not aware of
any specialties this one has.

Can I send the file to one of you in private? I don't want to publically attach
it to this issue. :-)

Adding some C/Cs.

SBA->MBA: Was't there a similar proxy-almost-endless-load thingie recently
solved in Writer? Are there any connections? Please comment, thx.

Now I had the same issue again, with a disabled proxy - but one of the sites in
a hyperlink is down at the moment. Calc currently loads the spreadsheet for more
than five minutes...

Seems to be related to the fact that
1. the DNS name (A record) of either the proxy or the domain can be resolved,
2. but the proxy or domain name is unreachable
