Problem disappeard (more or less) after I set hardware acceleration to min in WIN System Administration. It is still not as smooth or fast as I would like but much better. @thb: not sure if that issue is related as Impress has not crashed, even when I cycled through all the transitions (via the Task Pane) a few times in Normal view (this shows the same problem). I tried changing the '3D View' settings under 'Tools/Options/OpenOffice/View' but none of these had any effect on the speed.
