If it is not in the current color-table it shows RBG 0 0 0 as default. So if crossfading leads to a color, which is not in the table the default is shown, if it is in the table, the color out of the table is shown. You can try this, if you crossfade from black to white with enouph steps (254) and you come to a grey out of the table, it is shown.
