The problem is that if the rename on the layer toolbar is not finished (not pressing return or esc!) and the current name is invald (empty or a name of another layer) then a click anywhere that causes a focus loss for the layer toolbar will freeze the office. The office is actually not freezed, losing the focus causes the layer toolbar to end the layer renaming and if the new layer name is invalid it will pop up the dialog to choose another name.
