Sorry for a new posting, but inspiration just hit me again ( ;-) )

NAMING:
  Banded Rows (I do not like this)
vs
  Striped Rows
vs
  Highlight Alternating Rows

Also, another useful option:
 - Repeat Header Row
 - Repeat Footer Row
   [similar for Columns]

A very useful option is to highlight the current row (having the focus). This is
further discussed in issue 79882
(http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79882).

Just some further thoughts:

A.) 'BANDED' should be replaced with 'STRIPED'
Alternating rows are really like stripes, see
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/striped (e.g. striped fish and tiger are striped).

B.) Striped Rows vs Columns
Having striped rows simultaneously with striped columns is exceedingly rare.

C.) I would prefer some advanced styles that do not need setting many options.

Therefore, it may make sense to have only the following design elements:
  1.) header row (or column)
  2.) common row (or column)
  3.) striped row (or column)
  4.) row vs column (OOo UI setting, not really an element)

When *Striped Rows* is selected, then:
  - odd rows are drawn using the striped row colour
(usually darker colour)
  - the even rows are drawn like the *Common Row*

When both *Header Row* and *Striped Row* are choosen, then:
  - first row is the *Header Row*
  - even rows (2, 4, ...) are drawn using the *Common Row*
  - odd rows (except 1) are drawn using the *Striped Row*
  - there should be a high contrast between the header row and
the next row

In general, header rows should contrast against the rest of the table.
Therefore, styles used for header rows should in general have:
  - bold text
  - centered text
  - contrasting background relative to the table body
  - font color contrasting to the background
[therefore, the font colour for the heading row is usually
 opposite that in the table body]

Also, when using both header row and striped rows, the row following the header
row should take the colour that contrasts most to the header row. [IF header is
dark, choose the lightest colour for the 2nd row, and the less light colour for
the 3rd row...]

thanks for the designs. Please see

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Draw_Tables#Table_Design

about more information on table designs. As documented here a table design can
contain up to 7 styles.

* header row
* total row
* first column
* last column
* vertical banding
* horizontal banding
* default

where all styles use the default style as parent.

now for a table design you should give all 7 styles.
But you can reuse styles, for example you can say
that the header row style is also used for total row,
first and last column. Or maybe use only one style
for vertical and horizontal banding.
All styles should be formated in a way that the user
see a difference if enables on of the formatings for
his table. For example, it would be undesired that the
header row is not available or formated the same as the
default style, therefore the header row would not be
visible if the user enables it.

Please remember that a cell style can also contain
border formating.

Looking forward for more design proposals!

This enhancement applies to both OOo IMPRESS and DRAW.

This is a response to the blog article:
Sneak preview of the upcoming table feature for OpenOffice.org Impress and Draw
[http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/sneak_preview_of_the_upcomming]

The new "Table Design" feature is absolutely fabulous. And it was high time for
it to be implemented. Though, I did not like the default colours as displayed in
the preview. There are so many better combinations. I will attach a spreadsheet
with a couple of new style suggestions.

Some of these styles (actually all) display further formatting features, like
bold and centered text styles for header row and outer table margins. Another
style was applied to tables containing special rows delimiting subcategories.
