I tried to verify with 2.3.1, but unfortunately, my Vista testing system is an
old machine not supporting Aero. I'm on an nvidia chipset with the original
certified Microsoft driver.

With OOo 2.3.1, when loading a presentation containing a video, nothing bad
happens. I activated the Windows Vista theme, and it stayed as expected;
additionally, the video plays just fine all the time.

Do you mean that Vista will switch to classical mode, i.e. the design of Windows
2000, or do you mean that only Aero (the 3D glass effects of the desktop) will
disappear, but the basic Vista design will be active nontheless?

Only Aero and Glass effects get disabled, switching to basic Vista design.

To reproduce

As the MS documentation for the DirectShow Overlay Mixer states, it contains
calls to GDI, which probably is responsible for deactivating the Desktop Window
Manager (DWM).

Unfortunately, I have no testing machine available with Aero and Glass. :-(
Adding thomaskrumbein, who has a Vista machine to test

Merry Christmas!

@floeff: happen to have vista on a local display to reproduce this? Patch is ok,
will take this for 2.4 if reproducable.

When loading a document containing a video, the Vista desktop composition will
be disabled. Once disabled, it stays deactivated until OpenOffice terminates.

Additionally, video playback is not reliable (starting with OOo2.3). Very often
I see the video for a short moment, then the video area turns black. This occurs
in both drawing and presentation mode.

I isolated the problem to the use of the DirectShow Overlay Mixer. Disabling the
Overlay Mixer cured both problems. I have no idea, if some other configurations
(use of VMR-9?)should be performed, I have absolutely no experience with
DirectShow. But I can say for sure, that simply disabling the Overlay Mixer as
seen in the patch, improves the usability of video in Vista drastically. In fact
it was pretty much useless in OOo2.3.
