I don't care too much if the transition is exact, ie if I ask for .25 second automatic transitions, and impress can't keep up all the time and sometimes it takes .3 seconds to make the transition, that's ok. There are some sorts of animation, however, which can only be achieved by stringing together a series of slides (for instance, to demonstrate a psychology experiment where the task is to detect the presence of a face in a picture shown only for 250ms). I use power point for to present these sorts of demos in class all the time, and it supports up to 100ms resolution in automatic advancement to the next slide.
