@es: please verify in CWS vclshowstop08
testing hints:
- testing on different distributions would be best, but it suffices to copy
different versions of freetype to the program directory as libfreetype.so.6
- especially test for fonts where no bold versions are available (e.g. CJK
fonts)
- also test vertical writing and rotated text
- also test without antialiased text (e.g. on an 8bit display)

Having a closer look at the issue this looks really bad, especially
considering that the freetype version with the bug are in mainstream
distributions like Fedora5 and Suse10. Suggesting showstopper status.

I disabled the advance.y by embedded FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden using this:

sal_Int32 advancey = maFaceFT->glyph->advance.y
  FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden call
maFaceFT->glyph->advance.y = advancey

the upgrade rendering disappeared, all charactors in a horizontal.
But the x render still have problem. that will caused different kerning
for each charactors. about six charactors as a round.

please see attachment.

Then I disabled advancex and advancey by same way. OOo work well.

The fix in freetype 2.2.x is not perfect yet. It can't handle vertical layout
correctly.

I proposed a patch for freetype 2.2.x to fix it. See:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217388

For OpenOffice, my proposal is:
If current layout is horizontal, then just ignore advance.y. If it's vertical
layout, then ignore advance.x instead.

Freetype's artificial emboldening glyph metrics were fixed with this commit
http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/freetype/freetype2/src/base/ftsynth.c?r1=1.27&r2=1.28
which got into freetype version 2.2.0.
I suggest to either
a. disable artificial emboldening before 2.2
b. force the advance.y to zero for the affected versions
c. used the metrics of non-emboldened glyphs for the affected versions
Which solution would you prefer?

It looks like this freetype bug:
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-gnome/2005-December/013163.html
So we should determine which freetype versions are affected and work around the
problem using the version info.

The emboldening code seems to change the metrics of the glyph. In your
screenshot the FT_Glyph.advance.y became non-zero. Your patch solves this
problem by ignoring the changes to the metric. Though this works in this
particular case this doesn't look like a good solution.

The other parts of the patch would kill artificial emboldening for
non-antialiased text (e.g. for an 8bit display the GetGlyphBitmap1() method is
called) and for vector graphics (e.g. Fontwork, flash export etc. call the
GetGlyphOutline() method).

So instead of killing most of the artificial emboldening feature I suggest we
should work on getting the metrics of the emboldened glyphs right. Which version
of the freetype library is involved here, which features are enabled and what is
the name of the problematic font?

based on m190, SUSE Enterprize Desktop 10.
m190 using the FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden api for fake embolden, because of abuse
using, it will cause a layout error. the continuas charactors vector will become
an cock line, that means they arenot in a horizontal line.

this issue related to 65520

attached is the screenshot and patch.
