The only way out of this would be using fontconfig's font resolution mechanism (see issue 46085). Currently i don't have any good ideas about marrying fonts.alias with the results of fontconfig. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. It used to work in Openoffice 1.1.x it does not in 2.0.x: I would call it a regression. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The difference to that issue is that some systems do not use font.alias file but a regular font.dir file in another directory and the corresponding font files are only available as soft links. If this enhancement request is still not understood please contact the submitter or QA(US). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Postscript defines 35 standard fonts with standard names (such as Times, Palatino, ecc...) On Linux hosts these fonts are available as URW fonts and as such they do not follow the naming convention of postscript (for instance they are called URW Palladio L, etc.) Since adhering to standard names is important to most users, most Linux distribution employ fontconfig so that font aliases are defined. For instance Palatino is defined to be an alias for URW Palladio L. In this way, if one opens a document prepared on a windows host and containing text in Palladio, it is rendered correctly. As of Openoffice 1.1.x, Openoffice was dealing with this correctly... When a text contained something to be rendered in a standard postscript font, the URW font was used (following fontconfig directions), and the font was rendered properly with antialiasing. As of Openoffice 2.0.x, Openoffice uses the URW font (following fontconfig directions), but does not do the antialiasing. Unfortunately this is quite bad: on low resolution screens some fonts when not-antialiased look really orrible (palatino is precisely an example) and make operators think that there is something wrong with the application, or that unix platforms are simply crappy. I regard this as a regression since things were working fine as of 1.1.x. Thanks for your patience. This bug may look rather low priority, but please understand that it is necessary to please users in the font rendering. They often look at this more than at any other functionality, and if it is low quality they start crying loud they want MS back. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Rather I have a /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/adobestd35/ directory with soft links to the URW fonts. I asked and I was told that this was present for compatibility, for applications not using fontconfig. Do I solve the issue with a font.alias file? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. We are probably importing the font family alias name from fontconfig but can not find it in our caches hence query X for the font (which renders it without aa). Looks more as an enhancement than a defect to me. @hdu: not sure whether PL needs to provide another interface to make proper resolving of fontconfig provided font alias names possible. @ka: is enhanced fontconfig support still on our list for OO.o 3.0? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
