OK. As I don't know what is the best, I won't try to change the behavior of the
spellchecker.

SBA: I regard it as a feature that the proposals follow the users "choice". A
spellchecker should not be too "political" by Favoring "one way of writing". If
the rules in France allow to write "both ways", the users choice should be the
"orientation" for the spell checkers proposals, as I have seen it in the CWS.

@ SBA :
I tried with nénuphar|nénufar and some other words, it doesn't work either.

Lines MAP and REP are not efficient in this cases.
I don't know what to do to improve proposals for correct words.

I added
REP maitre maître
but it doesn't change anything.

SBA: Verified in CWS dictionariesfor24.

Note: I looked at the example "maitre <-> maître".
Depending on the use of the cornflakes accent (OK, circumflex :-), the proposals
for a misspelled word (i.e. "maitrer") follow the users "choice" by NOT
proposing "the other way":
  maitrer -> maitre
  maîtrer -> maître

The dictionaries I attached are the same versions than the ones here:
http://dico.savant.free.fr/index.php
These are the last versions of the french dictionaries.
Please, take these ones.

--

@TL: sorry for my english. I shouldn't have written "erase".
What I wanted to say is : even if there is several lines for one locale, all
words from each dictionaries are recognized by the spellchecker.

in my dictionay.lst :
DICT fr FR fr_FR
DICT fr FR fr_FR-1990
DICT fr FR personal

It works. All words from each dictionaries are recognized, not just the few ones
in my personal dictionary.

TL->auberon:
I wasn't meaning that the entry in the dictionary.lst gets overwritten or sth
similar. I was just talking about the implementation that matches one locale to
exactly one dictionary file and thus in the end, if you have two entries for the
actual dictionary file, only one gets used for spell checking fr-FR.

@ TL : I'm afraid you are wrong. The last entry doesn't erase the previous ones.
I even use three dictionaries with fr FR.

fr_FR > old spelling
fr_FR-1990 > new spelling

If only one dictionary has to be choosen, I think the first one is the one the
users expect the most.

The difference between the both is very small (approximatively 2000 words
difference).
In 1990, there was an attempt to modernize the french spelling, and a report
about what changes should be made has been approved. But the new spelling is NOT
mandatory. The new spelling and the old one are both correct. It has been
decided to wait and see if people use it to definitely approve it or not.
Actually, most of the new spelling is not very often used now.
In the "Bescherelle", which is one of the major books for french spelling and
grammar, the new spelling is only considered as an alternative correct one, and
is just described in very few pages and in notes at bottom of pages in very
little letters.

Users will probably be upset if they must write "maitre" instead of "maître", so
the old spelling is probably the one that should be offered by default, and the
other one to download.
That's just my opinion. I could be wrong about how often the new spelling is
used.

In the future, I think we should merge the two dictionaries.
Not so easily done, because the affix files are different.

TL->auberon:

There is no use in having both spell check dictionaries installed and adding
both respectives lines:

DICT fr FR fr_FR
DICT fr FR fr_FR-1990

The last entry will win!
Thus if you have a favorite one that should be installed and will be the correct
choice for most of the people please state which one it is. And then only that
one will be installed as spelling dictionary.

I would be perfectly fine with choosing MPL for the French dictionaries, is that
feasible also for you ?

About the LGPL 3, I don't know if it's a problem for OOo.

The thesaurus and the hyphenation dictionary are in LGPL two and can be
installed by default too.

In the file dictionary.lst, we have to add the following lines :

DICT fr FR fr_FR
DICT fr FR fr_FR-1990
HYPH fr FR hyph_fr_FR
THES fr FR th_fr_FR_v2

For the first two lines, we have to decide if we want to install one of the
dictionary or the both.

Hi,

The problem was that the dictionary didn't have a LGPL licence and thus couldn't
be integrated.

The licence have changed recently (the first author gave us the authorization to
change it) and a lot of work has been done to correct the dictionaries. We are
still testing them, and we'll offer new versions soon, before the feature freeze
of the 2.4 version, I think.
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease24

I'll give some news about this before the 15 november.

TL->MH: Seems someone wants the dictionaries to be installed by default. Thus an
OSR review is required for them. Please take over.

Note:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries#French_.28France.2C_29
lists two different spelling dictionaries to be found. Please also choose which
one of those should be installed later on.
