Apparently nothing happened,
http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=odt
still returns File Type: Unknown

Either Microsoft is ignoring the request on purpose (would not surprise me, it's
very good for them that people don't know about OOo). This is an apparent breach
of their promise they give in their KB article #929149:
3. You will receive an email response regarding the acceptance of your
application to the system within 2 business days.
I think this would call for a massive bashing campaign in the media, as it
clearly violates their promises in order to harm their competition.

Or, the form might have got lost. John, are you sure you did not get any reply?
Care to try again?

Also, alternative office suites are listed for Microsoft's own formats. E.g.
http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=doc
also lists Corel WordPerfect as a potential application to handle .doc files.
Might want to list OOo there as well ;-)

I don't think this bug should be closed until OOo gets in MS's database.

Agreed, we should try again. John, do you want to re-submit or shall I try?

Good idea. I've submitted a form - see
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/File_Associations#OOo_File_Associations
- let's see what happens ;-)

With Windows XP we took steps to make it easier for customers to find software
applications that can operate on specific file types. To do this Windows XP
added a web service which presents applications which can operate on a given
file type.

Doing this for ODF extensions or OOo 1.x file extensions results in an unknown
file type. See http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=odt

This leaves users receiving the more and more popular ODF documents puzzled not
having a clue what to do with the file, instead of pinting them to the OOo
website and suggesting to download OOo.

The referenced Microsoft Knowledge Base document #929149 (
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929149 ) claims that vendors can e-mail the form
(attached to the KB article) to MS and their product will be added to the
database.

This seems like an easy way to attract _lots_ of new users.
