tra: Verified with independent build on the Intel platform.
Thank you for your team's hard work (pjanik, and others).

QA will be possible with this fix for 2.2 without having to resort to 2.0.3
testtool on Intel.

Testtool needs to be tested on PPC and other platforms to make sure that it is
not broken.

tra: Current progress
- Mac OS X map file format differs from other platforms like Linux for instance
- On Mac OS X we have to use the linker switch exported_symbols_list which
requires a plain list of
   symbols to be exported
- As Mac OS X also uses gcc we can use the Linux map files (name mangling for
C++ symbols is equal)
however and do not have redundantly maintain another map file, in order to
do this we have to
transform the Linux map file format to the Mac OS X compatible format
- Linux map files support a wildcard mechanismn enabling to easily export
classes of symbols e.g. RTTI
symbols with _ZTI* for instance, the Mac OS X map file support lacks this
feature so RTTI symbols
have to be extracted and added manually to the exported symbols list on Mac
OS X
- Several places need to be touched to accomplish all the aforementioned:
solenv/in/unxmacx.mk,
   solenv/inc/_tg_shl.mk
- Some scripting similar to solenv/bin/addsym.awk is neccessary for the
transformation and to
dynamically extract RTTI symbols in C++ libraries

I made some good progress implementing all the neccessary support so a first
patch will follow soon
(hopefully :)). Some build env. experts like Ause definitely have to review
this work at the end!

tra: I tried the map file approach on Mac OS X (linker switch
-exported-symbols-file). This solves the above mentioned problems during the OOo
startup while keeping the possibility to use strip -x.
The format of Mac OS X map files is different though on Linux/Solaris but the
name mangling of the Mac gcc is equal to that of the Linux Intel gcc. So in
principle the Mac OS X map file could be generated out of the Linux-Intel gcc3
map file (the desirable solution IMO).
One problem is that Mac OS X map files apparently do not allow the use of
wildcards which will be used on Linux for instance to export RTTI symbols
automatically. A solution to this problem could be to link the concerned
libraries twice (using the first pass to extract the list of RTTI symbols and
extending the map file automatically, the second pass to link the library using
that map file).

@all: I don't think that this is the cause for the testtool problem described in
#i69378 but I'm not 100% sure. The problem captured here can on the other hand
have very strange side effects so it has definitely to be fixed asap.

@all:

Would this have an effect of being able to run the testtool under 2.0.4? I have
opened issue 69378 due to this problem. It definitely affects only the Intel
platform and is linked into UNO bridges problems. This issue does not exist if
the 2.0.3 testtool is used.

Two things:

1 It would probably be good to learn more about the various switches of Mac OS
X's Mach-O ld and strip. I will try to find some time.

2 The fundamental reason that strip -x produces a new problem is that we
violate the ODR with our code (we expect that different dylibs/executables can
have different definitions for the inline getCppuType functions generated by
cppumaker). We could avoid this by making the generated functions static, but
that would unfortunately increase the size of the binaries. Lets see.

I noticed that cppuhelper lib has map files for all Sun supported platforms,
but not for OS X. Not sure
whether this has any influence on whether the getCppuType functions get bound

If Mach-O ld supports something similar to Linux/Solaris map files, that should
help to avoid problems from our ODR violation, as using a map file implicitly
causes intra-lib references to non-exported symbols to be statically resolved.
So, if someone knows how to have such map files for OS X for all the libs that
have map files on other platforms: please go ahead. (Once the ODR-violation
related problem is solved, it has to be re-evaluated if strip or strip -x is
better to solve the original problem of this issue; also it is unclear to me
whether this all relates to Intel only or is also relevant for PPC.)

If Mach-O strip works similar to ELF strip (just removing unnecessary exported
symbols, not changing any intra-lib references from symbolic to static), obr's
patch would probably not help in solving this problem. (It could actually
adversely hide the problem. Independent of this issue, stripping dylibs on OS X
is of course something that should be done if possible.)

The problem is that cppuhelper bootstrapInitialContext loads some code that
expects to find dylib-local getCppuType functions with full type information,
but with a strip -x or unstripped soffice.bin, those functions are also
exported from soffice.bin, but in the version that relies on types.rdb, and are
thus erroneously taken by the code.

tra: The initial try to solve this issue was to insert the following line into
solenv/bin/deliver.pl:

tra: Office crashes during startup. I assume this has something to do with the
new 'strip' parameter but I
will try to verify this suspicion.

Even with the fixes from issue 64672 on CWS mac10test, testtools'
bridgetest_inprocess (see http://udk.openoffice.org/common/man/draft/tests.html)
fails, as throwing a derived com::sun::uno::RuntimeException from
cppobj.uno.dylib and catching it as a base com::sun::star::uno::Exception in
bridgetest.uno.dylib does not work.

The problem is that too many symbols are stripped from the delivered uno
executable, so that the RTTI for RuntimeException (consistently taken from uno
executable) points to a base RTTI for Exception within the uno executable, but
that RTTI is not exported due to bad stripping, so that the catch (Exception)
in bridgetest.uno.dylib uses some other RTTI for Exception, and matching fails.
The solution seems to be using strip -x instead of plain strip when
delivering executables.

(By the way, dylibs seem not be stripped at all on this platform, only
executables?)

Fixed, solenv/bin/deliver.pl:1.102.18.1. testtools' bridgetest_inprocess now
works on CWS mac10test.

@tra: You can just as well own this issue, and verify it when the CWS is ready.
 :) Thanks.
