verified.
The options dialog gets updated when dragging, the Search Replace dialog (move
to the bottom of the screen, then expand and/or use calc where the expanded part
will most likely run out of the screen anyway) gets updated when dragging stops.
Scrolling in a document with parts off the screen now works as well without the
display being corrupted.

I don't have a dual monitor setup (so I couldn't test that), but since this will
be another issue anyway, all problems that should be addressed with the issue
are solved in pj83

The document scroll is another issue and I'll probably not spend time on it,
sorry.

Please verify in pj83.

with maho's vanilla 2.2, I'm getting some redraw issues when scrolling text when
the window is on the second screen. When the ooo writer window is on the primary
display, I get no problems.

pjanik: I have tested the patch attachment 43415. It works with one exception:
Place the OpenOffice.org Writer window off the bottom of the screen and scroll
up the document. This still causes a redraw issue. Moving the window forces a
refresh.

If there is a scroll event and the window is off the bottom of the screen we
need to force a refressh too. All other side of the screen are unaffected.

The attached patch redraws the complete window when the problem could
potentially happen.

It would be more correct to redraw only the newly exposed region, but that
could be potentially more
brain-intensive ;-)

It does not handle the part of the window above the screen case because I
simply don't know how to
move window so that some part of it is above the visible screen.

I suggest handling the upper case anyway since it does not cost much. E.g. on
Gnome and KDE you usually can move a window by pressing ALT and clicking
somewhere into it and can move the window outside the upper border; perhaps
there is a similar key/mouse combination with Mac X11 and your window manager ?

pjanik: Use 2 monitors that are different sizes. The larger monitor is the main
screen. The two monitors should be aligned by their bottoms. You can then have
most of the top of the window off the screen.

Using X11 apps you can't move them above the top of the screen much (unless
there is a big difference between the screen sizes). This is because you can
only drag them with the title bar. Something like iChat, since you can move the
window by dragging the bottom of the window can go off the top of any
non-primary display since there is no menu bar in the way.

Yes, this is X11 on Apple issue.

pl: can we workaround it somehow?

To sum up: if the dialog is drawn off the screen size and then moved, the
contents that was first drawn
offscreen is not visible.

Can we somehow force it to be redrawn?

This is the Xserver's work. As new parts of the window become visible it is its
responsibility to send Expos events to the client (OOo in this case) to redraw
the parts that become viewable. Working around an Xserver that is so broken that
this does not work is not feasible IMHO. However please try a simple check to
test whether you get an Expose event or not; a fprintf to stderr in
vcl/unx/source/window/salframe.cxx in X11SalFrame::HandleExposeEvent should do.
If we get an Expose event but swallow it somehow the bug is of course on our
side.

pl: Expose (or GraphicsExpose) is sent once the window in case (I'm trying it
on Tools - Options dialog) is
shown, but if you afterwards move it so that e.g. the second half of the windiw
is offscreen and thus only
the first half of the window is visible and then will e.g. switch from Memory
to View tab of the dialog and
then move the window back so it is visible again, X server doesn't redraw the
window.

We want to workaround it.

I'd advise against, the Xserver should instead be fixed. However if you really
want to, then you can send an artificial paint event for the region becoming
viewable. You have the old geometry (position and size) in the maGeometry member
of X11SalFrame. You can calculate the changed region with that (consisting of
two rectangles in case of horizontal or vertical movement, in general four
rectangles). If any of these intersect with the screen (0,0,screen width, screen
height), you can generate paint events for those rectangles (converted to window
coordinates). Alternatively you could simply redraw the whole window if the
window was off screen before the event.

But fixing the Xserver would be better. What will you do if the next event it
does not send is the move event ?

Then don't, I guess there is so much else to do. Regarding gesockopt: I would
imagine that changing that is a compatibility issue whereas fixing a missing
Expose event wouldn't seem to be, so I guess that it is much more likely that
this particular Xserver problem gets fixed :-).

Please remember that this is not just dialogs, but scrolling a document too when
part of the document is off screen.

@ericb:

This issue still exists with 2.1 Intel.

Upped priority to P2. This is a very important issue that may have to look into
as a new user would not know what to do to restore the dialog so that it is
complete.

@ericb:

Can confirm that this also happens with Intel builds. Maybe this is an X11
issue and not an OpenOffice.org issue as a collapse and expand draws in the
missing information. This also happens with Calc in a spreadsheet if the
spreadsheet is shifted offscreen and then back on screen.
