+me on CC

FYI, I have triggered problems building on Leopard PowerPC with stlport, I
think too it's time to switch for
system stl on Mac OSX.

@mox : where are you exactly building using --without-stlport on Mac OS X ? Are
you building on Intel
only or PowerPC ?

ericb: I have not tried to do a full build with all these fixes.

But I think it is very much worth trying to build, obviously x86 builds would be
more interesting.

And I also think that especially in the long run, it would be worth the effort
to fix any Mac OS X specific bugs that may come up, related to this.

How should I read that page then?

 The OpenOffice 3.0 code line will be the first chance in many years to do a
 number of changes which will break the strict binary compatibility and
 patching requirements on the current SRC680 code line.

will break [...] binary compatibility requirements

 The following is a short list of changes which are planned before the first
 release of OOo on the new codeline.

 [...]
* get rid of STLport, use system STL where applicable

What we're discussing here ;-)

@rene: ...but at least for the usage of STLport within the C++ UNO ABI we
cannot drop it, unless we drop compatibility (which we do not really plan for).

Maybe discuss all that on the list, this little bug here is just my modest
proposal to move to system stl for new ports that aren't established yet and
can change without controversy, I wouldn't like to see that get derailed and
chained to the i386 issues

FWIW http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=19664 is what we're testing the
stl headers for to ensure that they are visibility safe. I'll put that into
the error message for your headers are not visibility safe

cmc:

I did the command
echo #include string | gcc -x c++ -E -  /tmp/string
as you instructed. That works.

Trying to guess what is needed to be found there, I grepped the /tmp/string with
visibility. That results in:
#pragma GCC visibility push(default)
#pragma GCC visibility pop

is that (default) thing the one that breaks the check? Or am I completely
lost?

cmc-mox: well your headers look perfect for using visibility with them, which
fits the results mentioned on [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrt the mac. And the
grep should have found visibility push so what is the error message you got
that causes your trouble ?, should have just said...

checking if hash_map will be in __gnu_cxx namespace... yes
checking if STL headers are visibility safe... yes

Nah, this is just two patches mismerging incorrectly, your configure.in with the
two patches together is now...

if test $USE_SYSTEM_STL = YES; then
   AC_MSG_CHECKING([if hash_map will be in __gnu_cxx namespace])
   AC_LANG_PUSH([C++])
   AC_TRY_COMPILE([#include ext/hash_map
using namespace __gnu_cxx;
],[hash_mapint, int t; return 0;],
  ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map=yes, ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map=no)
   AC_LANG_POP([C++])
   if test $ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map = no; then
  AC_MSG_ERROR([Can't find hash_map. Try with stlport enabled])
   else
  AC_MSG_RESULT([$ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map])
   fi

   if test $HAVE_GCC_VISIBILITY_FEATURE = TRUE; then
   AC_MSG_CHECKING([if STL headers are visibility safe])
   AC_EGREP_HEADER(visibility push, string, stlvisok=yes, stlvisok=no)
   AC_MSG_RESULT([$stlvisok])
   if test $stlvisok = no; then
  AC_MSG_ERROR([Your gcc STL headers are not visibility safe. Try with
--with-stlport4])
   fi
fi
fi

it needs to be

if test $USE_SYSTEM_STL = YES; then
   AC_MSG_CHECKING([if hash_map will be in __gnu_cxx namespace])
   AC_LANG_PUSH([C++])
   AC_TRY_COMPILE([#include ext/hash_map
using namespace __gnu_cxx;
],[hash_mapint, int t; return 0;],
  ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map=yes, ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map=no)

   if test $ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map = no; then
  AC_MSG_ERROR([Can't find hash_map. Try with stlport enabled])
   else
  AC_MSG_RESULT([$ac_cv_cxx_have_ext_hash_map])
   fi

   if test $HAVE_GCC_VISIBILITY_FEATURE = TRUE; then
   AC_MSG_CHECKING([if STL headers are visibility safe])
   AC_EGREP_HEADER(visibility push, string, stlvisok=yes, stlvisok=no)
   AC_MSG_RESULT([$stlvisok])
   if test $stlvisok = no; then
  AC_MSG_ERROR([Your gcc STL headers are not visibility safe. Try with
--with-stlport4])
   fi
fi
AC_LANG_POP([C++])
fi

i.e. the LANG_POP needs to be *after* the AC_EGREP_HEADER not *before*, just a
side-effect of issue 72150 fixing that it is C outside push/pop pairs and C++
inside them, while this patch also wants to modify the same rough area. I'll
mark this a dependent on the other so it won't happen when if we do apply this.

cmc-sparcmoz: It's your call which way you want your port to lean wrt.
stl/stlport, just giving you the opportunity of removing linux sparc from the
using-stlport list :-) The current patches already assume that sparc wants to
stick with the i386 pattern, so no changes needed then.

For GNU/Linux SPARC the general approach has been try and maintain upstream with
all internal modules and leave --with-system stuff for the distributions. Also
trying to track as close as possible with i386. The only exception is
--with-alloc=system is necessary because the alignment is not properly detected.
Also there is no Sun Java for SPARC so gcj is used. So I think SPARC will just
follow what is done for i386 upstream, if it works. But always open to advice or
suggestions along the lines of do this, do that.

We exclude the current ports that we can consider locked to the stlport abi,
i.e. i386, powerpc, sparc (?)

All other and new ports to linux would default to using the gcc stl headers,
i.e. x86_64,ppc64,mipsel,mipseb,mipsel64,mipseb64,arm-eabi,arm etc. One can
still build against stlport if you want with --with-stlport4 except that now the
warning about the ABI that is being voided is against the new default.

Open question is the powerpc or sparc ports want to change abis and start to
default to system-stl or not.

The real plus here is that ports of OOo to Linux new archs don't get stuck on
porting stlport but can get right into the real business of porting OOo itself.

We stick a few tests in here as well for a suitably new compiler and suitable
for use with visibility gcc stl headers.

What do the various port maintainers CCed think, assuming that the configure
tests are sane ?

Well, if it was me, I'd default to system-stl even on Linux x86 ;-) - the
compatibility broke for Java extensions with 2.3
[http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/is_your_java_extension_ready], so why not
break the c++ extensions compatibility for 2.4; pity that it did not happen at
the same time.

[This would probably include up-stream using a more recent gcc as the default I
guess?]

I'd *suspect* that upstreams linux gcc doesn't have safe stl headers for use
with visibility, because my closest-I-can-get-to-Hamburg-environment doesn't
have them, so they'd have to upgrade their libstdc++ headers if they wanted to
change the linux i?86 abi. But I really don't want to make any waves about the
i386 abi, that's just a rock on which we'd founder.
