I can confirm with version OOO320m4.
It´s not easy to import tabular data into calc when suffix is another then .csv
or .txt because of autodetecting of filetype.
As a workaround you can drag&drop .dat file into calc. this action open text
import dialog.

scenario: a data file consists of tab separated values with file suffix .dat.

in url load bar, the file name path is typed, e.g. /path/to/filename/file.dat

The file is opened as corrupted characters in the writer application!

The correct behaviour is that an import dialogue window should appear to
configure calc to open the file.
