reply to your questions:
- yes the link target CFKR was in the same directory
- i don't know if it still works with Excel as i no longer have Excel, but last 
time i tried to load the file with Excel it worked
- if i remember correctly, the links were originally between different sheets 
in the same file. I then decided the file was getting too big and separated the 
different sheets into separate files. This applies to the whole project, don't 
know how specifically it applies to the file i uploaded. Maybe pulling linked 
sheets out of a file is a clue as to what's going on.
-btw when i was previously unsuccessfully trying to load the file, i never got 
to the point where it prompted about updating links

OK, nice to see you have found a workaround.
I've changed the summary according to your informations.
I guess this behaviour is already known and filed in another issue.
Anyway, just to finish it properly, could you tell us:
- is the link target (CFKR.xls) present in the same directory on your network 
drive?
- is it working with Excel? 
- how did you make your link? (I can't find any reference to "CFKR" in your 
file)
